I tried a search but didn't find anything really useful.

I just bought a HP DVD640i. I so far seem to be getting the hang of what to do with DVD Shrink but it is so slow. My friends tell me they encode a movie using this program anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. My movies all say anywhere from 3 to 4 hours. I even saw 5 hours before! I am watching the rate and it is only fluctuating anywhere from 400 to maybe 800 KB/s. I figured my burner would be faster then that. I do have a slight problem. An older system. Do I have a bottleneck?

My hard drive is only a 20 gig with 7 MB free (I know I know). I am not even sure if it is a 7200 rpm. My computer is a 1.1 Mhz and I have 512mb memory. I do plan on getting a new hard drive within the next week. Will this help my problem? Thank you for your time and opinions. I do appreciate them!

Defiantly get a bigger hard drive or free up some space on that one. I would advise "Defragging" the hard drive.

Check your DMA settings - How ? do this -> Go to Control Panel> System> Hardware Tab> Device Manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers> Right Click Primary IDE channel (and Secondary IDE channel after you finish with Primary)> Properties> Advanced Settings Tab> Transfer Mode or click here to learn.

Do the above from both "Primary & Secondary IDE channels".

I (We) and you need to look at whats in both "Transfer Mode" and "Current Transfer Mode". Screen shot below is what I'm talking about.

You can also look here for some other solutions: http://sniptools.com/vault/getting-back-to-dma-mode-in-windows-xp.htm

If it is in "PIO" mode. Click the "Driver" tab, and uninstall the driver. Then reboot. Upon rebooting windows will automatically reinstall the driver and it should go back to "DMA" mode.

You could also try to run something like enditall2 before making a backup. This quickly and simply allows you to shut down all the open processes that are not required to run the PC, this will free up what resources you. have purely for the application you are doing. Once it has run just open the Shrink application. Regardless of what you do, you results are always going to be limited by the system hardware you use. Remember that the HDD is going to be the main bottleneck for data transfer, but your CPU is what has to do all the hard work of encoding.
