I am using Shrink and Decrypter with no problems on single layer burners. I want to move to the double layer type burners and to HD formats. Will shrink work with the double layer burners (just changing the output file size?) and on HD formats?

The best method of burning a dual layer disk is to use Decrypter in iso read and then write mode. Rip your movie to your hard drive in iso mode, switch to read mode and open your mds file and burn. You will get an exact 1.1 backup of your movie. I have found of all the programs Decrypter works the best it handles the layer break very well and I have not had any coasters in the 30 I have made.

cm42066 ,
Welcome to the forum. Shrink has not been updated in almost 2 years as the author went to work for Nero. DVDDecrypter will not be updated anymore and is out of business. I am not sure if any of the programs out now will do the HD format. To do a plain ole' d/l dvd I use DVDDecrypter by itself. I am going to presume that Nero in the new version will support D/L HD format

Dvd shrink will work with dual layer media and dual layer burners, but it will be slower. You'll probably have to change your backup target size in dvd shrink: Edit/preferences/click DVD-5 or custom and scroll to DVD-9 and click OK.If using Nero to burn,it does have trouble with the layer break on the dual layers.Nero7 is suppose to take care of that issue.
Dvd decrypter is the faster, and better at backing up DVD-9 movies onto dual layer media using Mode ISO read and mode ISO write. Quicker and simpler and no compression using that mode. That's the only way I do mine and they look great.
If you haven't gotten a dual layer burner yet, make sure you get a quality burner like plextor/benq/lite-on/NEC.You can get all but the plextors well under $50 including s&h at newegg.com.

Thank you all for the great replys!
I am sorry that the authors had to move on. I sent a donation but I guess there wern't enough of us.
Will Decrypter read and then burn without any intervention? I have two drives so can I just set it that way?
I do not want to pay for programs, so Nero is probably not the one I want.
I am looking for a d/l burner right now. I just think that waiting until the burn speed is 8X or greater is best. All the drives now are 4X and it's just too slow.
Newegg is a great site. Just picked up 2gig of RAM for my laptop for $210 from them (vs $1100 from IBM).
Using Thinkpad G41/3.33 P4/128meg nVidia/80g HD/XPsp2/ TDK 880N/ Memorex 8X dual format.

By 8x or greater do you mean for dual layer media, because I have found that 2.4x is best for this media, even though some of it rates out at 4x. I got an error doing a dual layer backup on Decrypter with my Plextor 716A because I used the 4x setting. Decrypter could not handle the layer break at that speed. Went back and used the 2.4x and no problems.

I would not bother with DL discs at this point. Way too expensive at 3 to 4 bucks each. And rewriteables are not available. That means if you ever mess up a backup you have a very expensive coaster.
Does anyone know whether dual layer rewritables will come on the market anytime soon?
In the meantime, splitting to two disks is a much better and cheaper solution. DVD Shrink does this very well - you can split at any chapter break or even in the middle of a chapter.
