I just found about about dvdfab decrypter. I didn't know there was such a thing. Yeah I know, I'm apparently behind the times.

I have used dvd decrypter and dvd shrink for all my burning. Still works perfect, I have yet to find a movie these two programs could not handle.

For how much longer I don't know since neither programs are updated anymore.

Now I hear about this dvdfab decrypter. So what's the deal on it?

I would say DVDFab Decrypter is just a stripped down (simplified) version of DVD Decrypter, without the burning engine. It is frequently updated though to handle new copyright protection.

DVDFab Decrypter is the ripping part of a program called DVD Fab, if you buy the total package you get the encoding and burning part. It works like the old Xcopy only cheaper in price.

So then I would assume you could use dvdfab decrypter to rip to hard drive, then open dvd shrink to edit/compress/encode, then burn it there with nero? (since dvd shrink would not have the hook to dvd decrypter anymore). I guess you could still use dvd decrypter to burn if done manually after dvd shrink is done?

Does dvdfab decrypter do as thorough a job of decryping as dvd decrypter does? Like, does dvd decrypter do anything that dvdfab decrypter could not do (besides not being able to burn)?

You would assume correctly. Just rip the movie with DVDFab Decrypter, then use the "Open Files" button in DVD Shrink to open them files up and then proceed as usual.

Sure, that is defiantly a usable method. Some people do not like Nero, so they change their backup target in DVD Shrink to "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter". That creates a ISO file (or .MDS if you hard drive is FAT32 formatted) to burn with DVD Decrypter.

This is a question you will get a variety of answers. Simply because some people used the "Advanced" features of DVD Decrypter and some people didn't. I will say you have alot more "control" using DVD Decrypter. DVDFab Decrypter is extremely simple to use!

( I catch my dog all the time on my computer ripping DVD's with DVDFab Decrypter! )

DVD Fab Decrypter just rips, period. DVD Decrypter is a very handy tool and does many things, to name a few it will booktype your +R media, it will rip to either iso or VTS, it will burn, it will rip audio, it will check for firmware updates, it will give media info and drive capabilities and there are more things. Shrink will still hook to Decrypter to burn if that is what you tell it to do.

annie its the best combination out there in freeware right now add to that vsodivx to dvd and you have practically all the freeware you need. FAb is awesome with latest encryption and decrypter still burns faster in my book than new programs do.

OK. That was going to be my next question. Cool.

The way I see this then is that there would really be no need to use dvdfab decrypter (in place of dvd decrypter) until a time comes when dvd decrypter could no longer strip out any of the upcoming new copy protections. This is good to know there would be an alternative if dvd decrypter couldn't cut it anymore. I have always wondered how much longer dvd decrypter was going to remain functional (since it's no longer updated). I'm enjoying it now while it lasts. It handles all my burns (along with dvd shrink) beautifully. To tell the truth, dunno why anyone would use anything else. Besides the great burns, I find it kinda fun to use the two programs.

Now I wonder how much time it's going to take before the big boys force this one out too like they did to the creator of dvd decrypter. From what I understand, they just about threatened to kill his children before he gave in!

Can you point me to some movies that DVD Decrypter can't do? I heard Hitch mentioned but I already burned it with DVD Decrypter (and DVD Shrink) without a burp.

I have DVDFab Decrypter installed now. I will test it when I find my first DVD movie that DVD Decrypter can't handle.

I still see no reason to buy the full version mentioned. Even if DVD Decrypter can't decrypt a particular movie (and DVDFab Decrypter can), DVD Shrink can still handle the editing after that. I am used to DVD Shrink and really like the way it works and it's re-authoring capabilities. I tried Recode 2, which is written by the same guy who made DVD Shrink and I still like Shrink better.

I'm trying to get all the info I can to be prepared for the time when DVD Decrypter no longer can decrypt (I'm going to be bummed when that time comes cause I really like that program). I hear a lot mentioned about AnyDVD but I'm not too crazy about a program that runs all the time in the background.

@MikeO89

Got a brand new comp so I thought I would give the new Lords of Dogtown a try with Decrypter. I tried using Decrypter by itself on both my old and new system and it was a no go. Then used AnyDVD in the background it broke the encryption and DVD Decrypter just breezed right through ripping. I was then able to burn but movie only. I think this movie is one that Decrypter finally cannot do on it own, an update would be needed, which is not gonna happen. However, DVD Fab Decrypter will also rip the movie, and is being updated.

Another feature of dvdfab decrypter is that when it starts, if your drive does not have DMA set, it will display an information message and offer to correct it.
The issue DMA being set incorrectly is a continuing problem in the Nero forum.

If DVD Decrypter could not decrypt that movie, why would you then use it with AnyDVD? I thought all you would need then is DVD Shrink. I also heard that DVD Decrypter has problems if AnyDVD is also running.

I use Decrypter to rip just to store it on the hard drive in case I want to use another program like DVD RB, Nero Recode or CloneDVD.

The only issue I see right now with DVDFab is ripping the DVD where the result is truly DVD Compliant. Sometimes there are issues with DVD Shrink not being able to open DVDFab ripped files (generating an Invalid Data in a certain VTS file error). Sometimes then VobBlanker is also needed to adjust those ripped files so DVD Shrink can then read them. DVD Shrink is a good test for any ripper as far as it being totally DVD compliant. I know the maker of DVDFab is working on these issues and hopefully it will be totally eliminated.

I encountered the same problem too, though I then tried DVD Fab Decrypter, and it ripped The Cave just fine

My traditional steps.

1 - Open the film with shrink
2 - Shrink analyses and encodes = iso file targeted to dvd decypter
3 - DVD Decrypter writes the film.

1 - From my understanding dvdfab will replace my step #1 (in the case that DVD Shrink cannot open the film?

2 - AnyDVD running in the background? Where (within my steps) should AnyDVD be opened to run in the background?

Thanks!

Open AnyDVD first and let it break the protection, then open Shrink and continue your process.
