Hello,
First let me say that when I use Dvd Decrypter I have no problems.
But when I use Dvd Shrink after I get to about 8% or so, the program slows down BIG time. My task manager says Shrink is using from 15 to 20% and my System usage is using the rest. Does this sound like a problem with shrink or something with my computer? Thanks for any advice. Thanks :-)

Q: My system runs slowly during encoding and recoding along with burning.
A 1: Sounds like you have far too much running in the background.
Every time you load a program, by default, it loads itself into your start menu. That means that when you boot up, all of your programs also boot up whether you want them or not stealing your system's resources.
Encoding, Recoding and Burning are resource intensive operations and require all that your PC has to give. Working with CD's isn't in the same ballpark as working with DVD's. We need to remember that so as not to get in the habit of multi-tasking when working with DVD's UNLESS we like the idea of ruining discs and making coasters.
Go to "Start", Run, type in msconfig then Click, "OK."
Select the startup tab, disable all then Apply, OK, OK again to restart.
The only things you might wish to allow to start with your PC is your Firewall and your Antivirus programs.
Your PC now has the resources to allow your encoding / recoding / burning programs to run.
Cheers,
Pete

I would listen to the man, he comes in peace and never talkes with forked tongue!!!!!! When I first started this DVD stuff, I decided to get the most powerful kit I could afford at the time. I also made a decision NOT to load any software on the machine which was not reguired, thus limiting the problems which Pete explained! In my humble experience, after reading through some of the threads in the past, set the machine working and sit back and have a couple of 'cool tubes' of whatever takes your fancy. I have spend many years on the CD burning scene, burning DVDs, as Scuba Pete said, is a different ball game. I wonder if you may need to think about how much RAM you have on the machine (256?), burning DVDs appears to be very 'resource hungry'. Any thoughts Pete?
Kindest regards
Joeymac

Thanks ScubaPete, I did what you said. I have one more problem I would love to correct. After I restart my computer My Cd-rom and Dvd-Rom drives arn't seen by my computer. This has happened many times before. Sometimes I have to unplug the computer from the wall and wait 5 mins. or so and then restart the computer. Another Ad person suggested to use this guide http://mysite.verizon.net/eric.groves/pg43.html It didn't really help, because Im having the same problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks so much. Kind people of AD :-)
I have to goto work now, I will check back later. Thanks for your help.

Hey cmax420,
No additions to that information, it's good stuff. (Goes to show just how much Roxio can mess up your PC, Lord, do I hate Roxio and all the trouble that programs causes.)
~ Back to the topic ~
With the low price of RAM today, you might just want to go out and buy 512MB of RAM. I'm not suggesting it now because generally, when somebody has 256 of RAM, it's generally in 2, 128MB sticks. You always want to have an equal number of chips. Having 2 sticks of 128MB ea. and then 1 stick of 256MB, will give you 256MB of usable RAM. It's confusing BUT trust me, we want to keep it even. We can use 1 stick of 128 and another of 256, that's even (not very much RAM But it's even. When it's an uneven in size like that, install the larger one in front. As I said, confusing BUT still, you want at least 512MB with the processor you currently have. If you can afford it, get 2, 256MB sticks of RAM giving you 1024MB's of RAM or 1GB and you'll sea your PC fly. It will be like having a new machine ~ (maybe Santa Clause can manage it for X-mas. :D)
Again, keep your startup tab in msconfig clean EXCEPT for your Firewall and your AntiVirus program and don't multi-task and things should run a lot faster and smoother.
Cheers,
Pete

@ScubaPete,
Thanks for the MSCONFIG thing. I used to know how to do that in DOS but they hid it on me in windows (i guess it is still in a dos shell). My friend's computer has lots of TSRs that slow his encode times to a crawl. He also doesn't have a full gig of memory either. All i could think of is right click and close, but that only works until the computer is rebooted, and then it goes back to loading up the memory again. Your guides are grrrrrrrrrrreeeeeaaaaaat! Thanks again.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what's the best software for burning a full size dvd or video_ts files to a single cd-r. Is it pointless, does the quality suck etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks again for the feedback, ScubaPete and others.
I will ask santa for more ram :-)
The only problem is the slow shrink speeds just started, I used to beable to shrink a Dvd 9 movie in about 1 1/2 hours now it takes about 8 hours to do the same thing. I even reinstalled windows and started over. Its still slow.
One Other question if you know the answer:
When I reboot my computer unless I unplug it from the wall for 5 minutes or so my computer doesn't see the DVD-RW or cd-rw drives on my computer. Do you know what might be causing this?
Thanks for taking your time and getting me back on track. You guys are really good people here and I will always be grateful to you and the AD community.

cmax420,
A couple of things that will slow you down like that are:
First thing first, let's check your DMA. "Ooohh, no you're not ! Only my husband or my Doctor checks my "D", "M" . . whatever . . ." No, no, it's OK, DMA stands for "Direct Memory Access" transfer mode OR as we say in the computer field, it's a really, fast way to move stuff. Many PC's today are using UDMA or "Ultra Direct Memory Access transfer mode, or as we like to call it, a really super-duper fast way to move stuff as opposed to the PIO mode. The PIO or Programmed I/O mode, is a technique whereby the system CPU and support hardware directly control the transfer of data between the system and the hard disk since shortly after the beginning of PC's up until the mid-1990's. So we want DMA (fast) more than we PIO (slow).
Let's check your Drive's transfer mode. It should be DMA-4, not PIO.
Windows XP downgrades the Ultra DMA transfer mode after receiving six (6) CRC errors and drops it down to the much slower PIO mode.
To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager
1. Go to "My Computer, ""System Tools," "View System Information," then System Properties, "Hardware," Then Open Device Manager
2. Double-click IDE ATA//ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.
3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which your burner is connected and select Properties. Now click the Advanced Settings tab.
4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if available if the current setting says, "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already says, "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must "toggle" the settings. That is, change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click "OK".
Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to "DMA if available".
OPTION: Either from "My Computer" on your Desktop or from your Device Manager you can uninstall the drive itself. From "My Computer," select your burner and "Right-click" it. Go to the Hardware tab," again select your burner, again select "Properties" then the "Driver tab" and Click, Uninstall, OK, OK again to reboot. From your Device manager, go to the DVD/ CD ROM Drives and Right-click the burner and select "Uninstall" and then "OK" all prompts until your PC reboots. Upon rebooting, the PC should "find" your burner and reinstall it setting it by "Default" to DMA.
NEXT, Not having a "working" ASPI layer (drivers that enable your software to talk to your drive).
Soooo, we need to see if we have a working ASPI Layer.
"Yea right, and ASPI stands for Another Stupid Piece of Insanity, right ?" No, not quite, it stands for "Advanced SCSI Programming Interface". "Well that tells me nothing, what's it do ?" That's a much easier question to answer. It is kind of a "translator" allowing your software to talk your hardware in a manner that your hardware will understand. Let's imagine an Earthman trying to talk to a rock. Now, think of a sledgehammer as being the interface. With the interface in play, the Earthman can tell the rock to disperse into gravel no matter what planet the rock is from, OK ? Good, let's see if we have a "working" sledgehammer ~
2. Check your ASPI layer to ensure it's working. The operative word here is "working".
ASPI Checker.
Ascertains your ASPI layer's presence and operation status
Check for your ASPI Layer.
ASPI Checker -
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?cat=%2f...
If one isn't present, we'll need to get one and reinstall it, then reboot our PC to allow it to "settle in".
Force 1.8 ASPI Layer -
http://forceaspi18.w.interia.pl/
Finally, when did you last defrag your Hard Drive (HD) ? If you have to stop and think about the last time you did it, then it's way, way overdue. Here we go, (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. When it opens, choose your HD, analyses it to see where we stand then if you need it (you probably will) choose Defragment.).
After you finish doing it now you might want to think about having "Scheduled Tasks" in your Control Panel do it for you on a daily basis.
A fragmented HD not only drastically slows down your system but it can cause all number of things to happen inside your PC, a messed up burn being one of them.
Once we've done that, our DVD burner should operate at peak efficiency :D)
Give it a test run and let us know how you make out ~
Cheers,
Pete

Hi Lencar,
Go to the top of the page and in the search box run a search for SVCD. There are tons of ways to get a DVD onto a CD. I think that Nero's mini-DVD is a good method BUT the VCD and SVCD will do the job as well.
Go for the SVCD first. Read a bit, come back when you have a question :)
Cheers and welcome aboard -
