hey, i've been busy ripping some home videos from my camera and trying to make them into dvds. i've been using some software by sonic that came on my computer, MyDVD, and it converts it really good. it takes usually 5-6 hours to convert to dvd format but it works well. i save the dvd as a harddrive folder of course to use dvd shrink, but the problem i have is that the original compilation of the dvd is approimately 22GB and one the first pass through dvd shrink gives me a bout a 10GB version. I've processed this dvd through dvd shrink 12 times now, each getting smaller than the last, however on the 12th time it is now down to around 5GB. The quality is still fine, i'm not too worried about the quality yet because the video that i had originally transcoded with sonic was high quality avi, and it hasn't lost a very noticeable amount yet.
here is my delima, i'm trying to burn to a 4.7GB disc, and the video is down to around 5GB and has slowly lowered the amount that it will reduce from the dvd. I'm not positive but i don't think it is going to shrink down small enough, even if i keep shrinking it the way i am. Is there another way i can shrink it more? another application, method anything? I'd really like to back it up asap. Thanx for all your help, hope this is understandable, lol. thanx in advanced!

You are probably going to have to split the 22 gig video into two 11 gig movies and run them through shrink twice each to accomplish you goal. I don't know if it is even possible to shrink 22 gigs down to a DVD-5, and even though you are down to 5 gigs and a DVD is 4.7 gigs your ideal target size should be 4.3 gigs for quality reasons towards the outer limits of the disc. I don't know of any other programs to help but I hope what I offer will do the trick.

22 gb folder compressed to 4.38 gb, there would have to be substantial video quality loss even if it is possible. I would try putting it on 2 dvd9's.

i may try splitting them and shrinking them, but what program would i use to split them now that they are already in dvd folders? i have already erased the source files since my harddrive was filling up fast.
what would happen if i used ratDVD to convert it to a medium file size and then convert it back to dvd format? i noticed that it has an adjustor that lets you save it as small filesize <--------or-------> better quality, so what if i set it right in the middle and then converted it back? would it convert back to a smaller size? or would the size be exactly the same no matter what but with alittle worse graphics than before?

I'm amazed that you even got 22 gig down that low. I'd agree and say that you should split the video into two 11 gig sections and then use DVD 9's.

does anyone know if the ratDVD idea will work? if it makes a smaller filesize then when converted back to dvd format it should be smaller, correct? i'm just trying to find a way to get it to all fit on one DVD5 for a couple reasons, its not all that important that i keep the quality as close to 100% as possible, lol, i guess its around 25% right now but it doesn't really look it at all, and also i have a ton of DVD5 and would prefer to use them instead and not use more than i have to, i just wanna back this up to archive it. i don't really need the perfect picture like i would for something like the matrix where quality is everything, lol, so can anyone think of another way to further compress this dvd or what about the ratDVD idea? thanx for your help so far!

I don't really know much about that program. I'm doubtful that it will compress video much more effectively than DVD Shrink, and I especially doubt that it will take you from 22gig to a DVDR in one pass. Why is it so important to keep it all on one DVD? By the time you get the video down to that size, no one is going to want to watch it anyways.

well its gone from 20GB to 5GB already and even with my resolution set pretty high the video loss is very small. i'm just trying to keep it "all on one DVD5 disc" if at all possible.
it's alright guys, i'll just try stuff until i get it. thanx for the suggestions.
wish me luck, lol.

i have used ratDVD to compress movies to my laptop, and wheni compressed a DVD-5 to ratDVD the size was about 1.5-1.8 GB, so it will compress it, but the quality will decrease alot comparied to the DVD-5 quality, i have never converted a ratDVD to dvd before, but i know it is possable, try it out, ratDVD compresses alot more then DVD Shrink!!! but with quality loss!!!!

Just go buy a $99. DVD recorder and be done with it in real time with no compression or loss of picture quality. I tried the Computer capure/rendering route and ended up buying a ILO with HD and now have transfered 25 Home videos to DVD and they look great and was easy to do.
Just my thoughts!
