Okay, so i just upgraded my desktop's DVD+RW drive to a Lite-On Internal 16x Double-Layer DVD+/-RW Drive (SOHW-1673S). If anyone's interested, it's on sale for $40 at Circuit City (after rebates).

Anyway, on my notebook, I have an NEC DVD+/-RW ND-6650A drive.

Obviously, both are DLs.

So my obvious question is, how do i go about adjusting the book type to DVD-ROM (is that the one that we should be setting it to?)? By doing this adjustment, the discs can be played on a wider range of players, correct? At least that's what I've gathered from searching.

I use Decryptor, Shrink, and AnyDVD for my business. I've just downloaded DVDInfoPro (so a suggestion of that while searching). Is there any other information you guys need? Please, I'd like to be able to adjust this setting to broaden the playability of the discs.

Gracias.

Sorry for the second post, but I forgot to mention that Nero came with the new drive--if that changes anything. I know I saw the Nero name during the initial search.

nero will do your book-typing for you.
and so will decrypter (i am almost positive) go under the settings tab and in the drop down your option is there, it even shows a litey drive there. in Nero, same thing, go in tools (i am not at home, so i cant see it for sure) but its available in the menu drop down.
i will double check when i get home to verify. (correct me if i am in error)

Under Tools > Settings > there is a plethora of tabs to deal with. I just went through them and didn't see anything titled "Book setting." It's probably under a different name, and rightfully so, but I don't wanna take any chances and change a setting I shouldn't.

I'll wait until you get home to provide a better walk through. No rush though.

In the mean time, anyone else have a suggestion?

Grazie.

In Decrypter its like this. Under thr tools drop down, go to drive, then "change booktype". Click that and you will get another window. Click on the brand (in this case lite-on) and where it ask's for Change for: in that drop down pick the media (probably DVD+R). Then it's a simple step to under "New Setting" pick DVD-ROM and then click "change". If it worked you will get a success window. Click OK and again OK and you are done.

You can do it with DVD Decrypter after opening it up there is a icon of a book in the lower right-hand corner, select that, then select your manufacture, and then select the option that you desire.

The easiest (and best way imo) for the litey is to use the lite-on booktype utility. Here's a link to it and also a link to a usage guide. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441

I don't think your slimtype drive in your notebook is capable of bitsetting/booktyping even with modified f/w.

Wow, thanks mort, that's a great link. I will most definitely be dling those progs onto my desktop.

You are correct in your assumption that I cannot modify the bitsetting on the notebook. It says "unknown." :( Any suggestions? I'm very, very, new to firmware so if that's the answer, please, i'd need it in layman's terms.

As for the desktop, I noticed that after I selected "DVD+R/DL" for the DVD-ROM setting, after the disc burned, it was still booktyped as DVD+R DL. Knowing this, I selected "Next burn" for my...next burn. It should be done any second. I'll keep yas posted. Does anyone know why even though I selected for "all" dvd+r/dl it was still booktyped at DVD+R?

Thanks.

Affirmative. That second burn yielded a book type of DVD+R DL. This was after i selected the option of "next burn" in decryptor. I just downloaded that proggy and it says the same thing (the book type that is).

I will receive a movie tomorrow so I can try that on my desktop. I need to dl a couple of those programs found on that cdfreaks.com site for the Lite-On book setting.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, i've been using the book type setting through decryptor. Apparently that doesn't work with Lite-Ons?

Is it possible to set the book type on the NEC that's on the notebook?

No, not on slim/notebook drives. Use the lite-on booktype utility with your lite-on SOHW-1673S.

I agree with Mort81 you need the Lite-on utility so you can bitset for every burning program.

I have a Lite-on 1633S and have used Decrypter to bitset with no problems, the program works fine with Lite-ons. It will even bitset my HP 640C which is a rebadged BenQ, it recognizes the drive.

Well, if Decryptor has worked for other Lite-On users (to book set), then I shall walk you through my process:

*Firstly* Does it matter if I use Shrink to rip it and then Decryptor to burn it?

Anyway, on with the process:

1- For example, LOTR The Two Towers, I ripped the movie using Shrink.

2- Then, under Tools > Drive > Change Book Type > and from the available tabs, I selected "Lite-On" because, well, I have a Lite-On drive > Change For: I selected "Drive (For DVD+R DL Media)" > Under new setting I picked DVD-ROM > I clicked "Change" and received "Success."

3- After that, I click burn and when it's done, it still comes out as "DVD+R."

The other time I tried doing this book setting, I selected "Next burn." Nada.

Anything I'm doing wrong? Should I have simply selected something like "DVD+R" instead of "DVD+R DL?"

Tomorrow, I will most definitely try using the Lite-On book setting via that program designed for Lite-Ons--BUT how do i use that in conjunction with my burning habits? (AnyDVD > Shrink > Decryptor). Do I have to set it in the Lite-On prog, then Shrink, then Decryptor (do i still need to change the setting in decryptor after changing it in the Lite-On? prog).

Sorry for all the questions, but like I said, I'm new to the book setting.

When you use the lite-on booktype utility once you set it to booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom your format will be changed from DVD+R to dvd-rom regardless of burning utilities or software used or unless you change it back to DVD+R booktype.

I don't use DVD Decrypter to booktype my +r media to dvd-rom since I have the lite-on booktype utility to do it for me.

No probs, gear, I appreciate the effort.

I wound up copying all the LOTR trilogy last night, the final movie was the one that I used the Lite-On program with--and it worked. I ripped the movie onto the harddrive then opened the book type program, set it, left decryptor alone, and burned. Afterwards, checking the disc via Infopro and DVDIdentifier, they all said the same thing: dvd-rom. Gracias to all, especially Mort.

One thing I noticed though, is that after I downloaded that program, i only received the .exe file. In other words, nothing else was extracted from that download. That .exe file has to be opened (and in turn, "Run") each time I open/use it. Whereas with most executable files, after you run that initial program, the program would find itself in C:\program files or wherever you put it. This does not. Has any experienced this (or know what i'm talking about? lol) or am i hitting jackpot on everything I've run into yesterday?

Thanks again for the help!
