I ripped a movie to my hard drive using Decyrpter. I am trying to shrink it and it is going insanely slow. It says it will take anywhere from 25-85 hours. Yes HOURS!! What can be wrong. I have Athlon 1.67ghz 1.25mb ram.

Your processor speed and RAM aren't that powerful. You also might want to look at your encoding settings. What do they look like? Are you performing a deep analysis, do you have an error compensation filter running? Both of these options will add a substantial amount of time to the job. How fast is the read speed of your drive?

I know I am not running a p4 but these settings were fine before. Oops 1.25gb ram. I am on a fresh install of xp on this system and now experiencing this problem. No deep analysis, no erro comp. I have a plextor 716a.

Check in the Device Mgr and make sure your drives are in DMA mode. Here is a guide.

Read down about setting your drives to DMA. Also you should be alright with your setup, it will be slow but it should not take you 25 to 80 hours. Just don't multi-task or use the internet.

Make sure you are in DMA mode and not the slooow PIO mode.

ahh, that RAM value is a little bit beter now : )
Agreed, my next suggestion would be to check the Drive Mode and make sure you're on DMA.

Re the slowness of DVD Shrink: I've seen this a couple of time but a reboot solves it. Normally it works very fast with my system (an AMD Athlon 64)
