Ok, I had trouble the other night with burning using TDKs and everyone said get better disks so I went and picked up Fujifilm DVD-Rs as suggested. Still not able to burn...getting the failure message as soon as I put in a blank disk and it starts to read.
Anyways here's the error message...Please can someone tell WTF is going on?

I'm pretty sure I have service Pack 2 installed yes. I have been able to burn DVDs for more than a year or so, this has just been giving me trouble in the last week or two. All of a sudden instead of having a DVD fail 1/10 times, it's more like 8/10 lately.
Like I said, I got new disks of a different brand but still having trouble. I haven't edited or changed any settings on my PC either.
Think the drive is just dying on me? Do I need a new burner?
Also...in case someone is interested in seeing the errors I was getting before witht the TDK disks, here's a link to my first thread last week:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/243018
Note that the first error was before I updated Nero, and the 2nd in that thread was the error I was still getting after updating...
So I'm at a loss...any help would be appreciated...and if someone actually figures out what's wrong and I can get back to burning bliss, you'll be my hero of the day.

I haven't tried verbatim...just TDK and Fuji, and long ago I believe I've used some Magnavox ones. I never had any problem with any kinds till recently. I only tried one Fuji tonight after buying them at Best Buy. They had the Verbatim there too, but not the Data something or other ones someone mentioned, so I got the Fujifilm disks.
I really don't want to have to buy every brand there is...that can't be right.
I'd hate to keep going and buying packs of disks and end up with more coasters. There has to be something wrong, not just that my drive doesn't like some brand or whatever. Otherwise why didn't I have any problem for the last year plus.
I'm starting to think I just need a new DVD burner. Thinking of just getting an external Sony Dual Layer burner and giving that a go...
Unless someone can give me a better idea other than buying every brand disk there is and hoping one works...that just can't be the best way to go about it.

no lets not spend all of your money I was talking about doing research on your drive and seeing if there is a preference. also you did not answer my question do you have a problem burning other things. by the way you can buy good discs online alot cheaper than bert buy but lets try to fix the cheaper option first.

I'll try burning a CD...I'll get back to you. Also not sure how to research what types of media my drive likes.
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105
That's my drive. I don't know why I wouldn't have had a problem burning until now if it were a matter of disks. Anyways, I'll try ripping a CD quick and get back to you. Also, I'll try just copying data to a DVD and see how that goes.
Thanks.

Ok something odd is going on...when I view the drive in My Computer I can see the CR-RW Drive (D:) and DVD-RW Drive (E:)
If I put a blank DVD in the E: drive, either the TDK or the Fuji, it switches to say CD Drive (E:) and if i double click to open it i get an error message saying the drive is not accessible.
However, if I put in a DVD it correctly shows the DVD title and (E:) drive. And I am also able to decode the DVD in DVD Shrink, so reading it is not a problem.
I also tried putting in a backup of a DVD I was able to successfully burn a little while ago with the same results, which is one of the TDK disks from the pack I've been having trouble with now.
So it seems it's reading DVD's with info already on them, but when I put either blank TDK DVD-R or a Fujifilm DVD-R it's acting like there's nothing in the drive...what's up with that?

Ok, just keeps getting more strange. for the hell of it, I just tried opening Nero and adding the files that shrink encoded to a temp folder and burned. Apparently, I was able to burn the DVD after ripping the files with shrink but by opening Nero directly and using that, rather than using shrink to burn. does that make any sense? i used the TDK discs. burned fine, and i tried it out in my dvd player and everything is cool.
anyone have a clue why this would happen?

i'll get my slight moan out of the way, you could have persevered with the original problem here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/243018 - it just makes our job harder that's all..

- re the 4465MB - you're burning too close to outer edge of discs. Set target size to 4300MB in DVD Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

Sorry for the trouble...I changed my target size to 4300 and I am reading the link you posted about ATAPI drivers...I think the "brand name" controller says it's a AMD-768 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller V1.43
So I found this page on AMDs site:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_...
after I downloaded it and tried to run it, it said, cannot install as this driver has already been installed...
I'll give Shrink a shot again now that I have changed the target size and see if that helps. If that doesn't work maybe I can just use Nero directly again and rely on that.
Thanks for the info again.

@ShockTXB,
If i read this correctly: Quote: Ok something odd is going on...when I view the drive in My Computer I can see the CR-RW Drive (D:) and DVD-RW Drive (E:)

Windows doesn't read blank media, it needs some kind of data to display correctly. When i try to access blank media in my drive by going in to my computer in windows, it shows the drive as a CD, and nothing in it (even though there is a perfectly good blank Taiyo Yuden DVD in there). I think that is normal, and not a problem. Once you have data on a disc, windows then knows what type of disc is in the drive. Now if Nero, or shrink doesn't recognize it as blank media, then you have a problem. It is usually media, or firmware out of date on drive. Sometimes the drive is shot, or worn out, or dirty lens on burner. You have plenty of free memory, and pioneers are good drives. Quote: Recorder: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105, Media type: DVD-R

strange, it knows you have a fuji disc -R and yet it says insert empty disc? You don't have to go out and by a spindle of every brand, but Best Buy just happens to have 50 packs of Sony +R and -Rs on sale this week for 18 bucks. Those +Rs are Taiyo Yuden if MIJ.

Post another burn log, and if you have it checked in Nero, Un-Check the Disc At Once option. I get coasters most every time i attempt that, but it works fine when unchecked. I am in no big hurry to make a coaster, so i have it write to HD just to be safe.

Ok...I was able to burn a disc onto the TDK before unchecking the Burn disc at once in Nero, and I tried another movie after unchecking that in Nero and it failed. This time I used a Fuji disk and it did the same thing I've been having trouble with before. The odd thing is in the error it mentioned the burn disk at once failure, and i double checked in Nero. i opened the burn video dvd and looked in the configuration and it has that unchecked.

I'm going to just try burning directly from Nero this time onto the fuji disc. if that works, that's just how im going to keep doing it from now on because for whatever reason it seems shrink is crapping out on me during the burn process. it reads and encodes fine tho. im out of ideas.

Ok more nonsense. After successfully burning a disk earlier before unchecking disc at once...i was unable to burn with nero on both TDK and Fuji. The Fuji it seems it acts like it can't tell what's in there and with the TDK I get the same power calibration crap and so forth like the errors I get in shrink. I tried puting it back on and got another coaster with the same power calibration error with a TDK disc in Nero.
So I'm staring at about 20 coasters I've ended up with over the last couple weeks and wondering why I've been able to do about 300 or so over the last year or so and now out of blue my computer is burn-retarded.
This is really just making me think the drive is dead. I don't understand why it could be the media if I've been able to do hundreds of these things in the past and now I'm on a losing streak like no other.
Any ideas? I'm totally lost.
Here's the couple of error logs I ended up with...

If you think I should try those Taiyo Yuden discs, can I get those at Best Buy or something? Link? I've never heard/seen them before.
But seriously, why would I be having this problem after so long of no problems if it's a matter of discs? So now both TDK and Fuji are useless.
I'm bout ready to toss the drive to the curb and just try a new Sony dual layer external drive and see how that goes...but I do want to hear what you guys think after looking over more of those logs I posted a bit ago...it's all jibber jabber to me.

If you can borrow one then fine but I know discs are cheaper than drives unless you just want one. for discs DVD-R-media.html?WT.mc_id=AdWordsDVD-RMediaTaiyoYuden&WT.srch=1" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.supermediastore.com//taiyo-yuden-DVD-R-media.html?WT.m... or google it and find a better deal I use verbatum but that is me.

Power calibration error "
This is taken from the actual Nero website:
I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?
Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.
Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (almost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.
Please try the following solutions:
1. Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
2. Try another brand of media.
3. Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
4. Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
5. Send the recorder in for service.

I would Suggest You try some other DVD burning software like Alchol 120% or ROXIO, just try majing a simple DATA DVD, it the error is same even with other Softwares...Then I truly beleive its a DRIVE ERROR, But the Pioneer ones are really trust worthy as I too have one...so at this moment I can think of a Faulty NERO installation with Wrong ASPI versions.
TRY ROXIO 7.5 with dvdregion free thats the Best.

though I realy dislike roxio making yourself a data disc w/nero is a good idea. You may like other software but Nero has proven itself to me. but that is my opinion. but yes those discs are good be careful if you bought the 4x's burn at 2x or close to that I never burn at over 4x because of quality

- the Nero logs show no installation problems, however i'd agree a reinstall of Nero (after full uninstall and running of Nero's Clean Tools) would be worth doing. As to ASPI versions, there's no mention in the logs of ASPI other than Nero's own. Problems with ASPI can be proved via Nero's info-tool, but as i say, there's no problems i see in the logs above so in my opinion it's not ASPI.

- i only agree with trying Roxio as in to see if Roxio itself works. Roxio interferes with Nero so it would only makes things worse for Nero. It is looking like a drive problem as all the Nero tweaks have been suggested/made. The original poster would probably be better off trying something like imgburm (www.imgburn.com, temj has probably used it, i haven't got round to it yet as i love my Nero). Anyway, adding Roxio just makes things worse in my humble opinion
