Which T-Y DVD-R should I buy -- and why

I have read a lot of good things about the Taiyo Yuden DVDs.
I started to order some of these DVD-Rs -- and ran across a new problem.
There are quite a few varieties available. I am looking for the best DVD to use for DVD Players (after burning).
I was planning on using DVD-Rs -- is that a good choice -- does it make any difference, whether it is +R or -R.
And if -R, which variety/model/package would be the best to choose, and why would that one be a good choice.
Thanks.

The thing is is that DVD+R can bootype to DVD ROM, which is teh universal booktype and can be read in all players, some of the older players can't play +/-. But not all burners can booktype. And is your burner compattible w/ both types? I would go w/ DVD-R 4x, but I don't really use DVD-R cause you know the booktype thing. They don't make DVD+R 4x so you have to buy DVD+R 8x.

ALL genuine TYs are of the same high quality, it really doesn't matter which ones you get, you should get the ones that suit YOUR needs best...whether that means white inkjet printable, silver shiny, silver inkjet printables, "brand name" labelled (found locally under Fuji/Sony 8x DVD+R MADE IN JAPAN)...etc...
rated speed really makes NO difference as most will suggest on here that you keep your burns @ 4x...so, there is really NO need to purchase the 16x rated ones as they are USUALLY higher priced...
locally, the 8x rated media under the various name brands are in abundance...so, it's much easier to find Taiyo Yudens locally in the 8x speed if you KNOW ahead of time what to look for...
the debate between DVD-R and DVD+R is also another "touchy" subject as IF your burner has the ability to "booktype", meaning change the DVD+R format into the universally highly compatible format of dvd-rom, then, the DVD+R is a "better buy" in MY opinion~ but this is a question IF your burner is capable of bitsetting or not~ :) otherwise, i would suggest getting the DVD-R format, as THEY are the most compatible without the "booktype" in the equation :)
good luck

What about this booktyping business.
Is this a software thing you can do if the drive supports it. Is it done when you are burning your DVD.
Do you need special software, or can it be done with Nero, for instance.
And how do you know if your drive can booktype -- is there anything you can test or look at -- or is there a list of drives somewhere -- or do I have to ask the couputer (GATEWAY) or drive (LITE-ON) manufacturer.

I would go with the DVD+R. Why..??? Because you can book type them into DVD-ROM and that is = play in all dvd players.
Yeah... really Taiyo Yuden ROCK..!!

alcohol- Thanks for the support -- yes, I have been thinking that this was the way to go --
particularly after catfreak (thanks a lot catfreak) referenced me to the little Utility program at LITE-ON to booktype discs on my LITE-ON drive.
The only problem is, it doesn't seem to work.
When I load the Booktype Utility (LiteON Bit Setting Utility v1.3.5), it looks good -- but when I insert a blank DVD+R into the drive and click on Query, it comes back with the following:
"0-0-0-0 D:LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-832S VTS3"
"Current Disc Type: DVD+R"
"Current Disc Booktype: UNKNOWN"
"Change Booktype to: NORMAL"
"Write Now! Change Query"
with a "F/W not support!" down in very bottom left hand corner (status line) of the little Utility screen.
The italized words of NORMAL, Write Now and Change are "greyed" out and not selectable. So what does that mean -- that my particular drive does not support Booktyping -- or a problem with the Memorex (yeah, I know, sorry) meadia -- or is something else going on here.
The little 5 page Utility documentation from LITE-ON is pretty good, but the screen above does not match what they show in their documentation.
Any ideas?

Hi there,
Quote: Yeah .. the 4x DVD-R are the best price because they're becomming obselete
Well beleive it or not, I still buy Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4x
And yes, I burn them at 2x.
So why would I pay more for 16x when I'm only gonna burn at 2x or 4x when I feel like it :)
Hey companies, keep all those TYG01 (DVD-R 4x) for me !
P.S: I have a NEC-3450a (Dell OEM) and an old LG-4040B
They both DO NOT booktype so I use DVD-R !
I read the reviews on the new LG-4167, looks nice !
I would buy an on other LG, or an other NEC !
I have been very happy with both drives up to now.
Father in law has the new NEC-3520a, Firmware v3.06
He also uses DVD-R, not sure if it bookmarks that one :)

Does anyone have very much experience with the LITE-ON Booktype Utility available and furnished by LITE-ON at the LITE-ON web site.
If so, would you look at my previous note, up about 3 notes in this thread, and tell me what the Booktype Utility is trying to tell me.
Is it trying to say that my particular drive does not support Booktyping, since it does not seem to offer the option for Booktyping (i.e. this option grayed out).

You have to use the Lite-On booktyping utility (thx again mort81) via dl from there site. You just set the utility and it will booktype all disc from here on out ,unless you change it.

GlueEater- If you have had experience with this program, please see my post, up about 6 posts from here.
The little Utility runs, but it doesn't appear to be doing anything. The screen I get doesn't match the manual supplied at the Lite-ON site and I don't seem to have any options available to click on when I run the program (everything is "grayed" out except for the Query button).

creaky-
Thanks a lot for that link -- it was pretty close to what I needed, I think, but I got nervous in dealing with the firmware -- wasn't even sure which version I had.
What I did was send a note to LITE-ON about the problem -- and I got a very nice response back saying that the "VTS3" firmware (identified by their Booktype utility) was the problem that their Booktype utility would not work, and suggested I contact the PC manufacturer (Gateway).
I just sent a note to Gateway (with LITE-ON's response), asking them about the VTS3 firmware, and asking if I could replace it with firmware from LITE-ON. I can do that, can't I -- but on the other hand, I doubt if my PC will allow me to do that, and still run.
Any thoughts or help you can provide me here would be appreciated. Thanks.

@freedom
if those are the 8x Verbatim DVD-R, then yes, those are real...do you have a hub reading on those? (just outside the hub)...on my 8x Verbatim DVD+R, mine start with "ZD1321-DVR-X47B" (it will be backwords when you read it...like if u were to look at it through a mirror) :)
while my knowledge of Verbatim media is not as extensive as my knowledge on Taiyo Yuden, i've found that all my GENUINE Verbs start with a "ZD" coding just outside the hub area~ :)
check and see, and let me know..i THINK you should be just fine
