It seems there are many uncertainties about the ps3. I read one thread that says one thing then I read somewhere else the exact opposite, so for that reason I was hoping you guys out there could help me distinguish facts from fiction. Here is what I would like to discuss:
1) Will the PS3 be backwards compatible with ps2 and ps1 games? I believe so as all the specs I have read support this, but other people on the thread "ps3 modding" have told me no.
2) Will the PS3 be able to play DVDs and CDs? Being that PS3, I believe has chosen Blu-ray as their drive type, can the PS3 do it? I know that Blu-ray is using a blue laser as opposed to the red laser of dvd and cd players, so will the PS3 be equipped with both blue and red lasers? or can the blue laser also read media made originally for the red laser? My belief is that it blu-ray drives cannot read regualr dvds and cds so in order for the PS3 to be able to play DVD and CDs it will need two lasers. Hopefully you guys will be able to figure this one out.
3) Will all games for the PS3 be High Definition Games? My belief is NO. I believe only the developers which choose to will be HD. The others will stick to DVD or CD games.
4) Will a High definition game only be able to be played if you have and HD TV? My belief is NO. I think the games developers that make HD games will also include standard definition version of the same game on the same disk allowing you to play a HD game on a standard TV. You will however lose the hd picture if you do so.
These are just my opinions so if we can discuss this it might clear things up and put an end to some of the rumors out there. If anyone else has any things about the PS3 they are not sure about post em here and hopefully we will clarify the facts and squash the rumors.
I have made it a point to remember nearly all PS3 specs and news so I'll be able to answer all these questions.
1. Yes but not all. Some of them will not be able to be played.
2. Yes it has support for DVD-ROM and Audio CDs. And logically I think the blue laser should be able to do it. The main purpose of it is to read smaller tracks on a DVD. A standard DVD had small little depressions which is how it stores data. Bluray and HD-DVD make these tracks smaller and thus can store more data so I can't see why it can't read larger tracks. Plus in photos of it there's only one cd tray on it and i don't think you can fit two lasers to one drive.
3. Actually yes. Game developers develop it in HD. They slect the highest they want to go. Bluray lets them not worry about storage issues. The PS3 will havea built in function where you can adjust the performance settings of the console so it will automatically dumb down a HD game for your TV that doesn't have HD. But some developers may use DVD format but no PS3 CD games will be made.
4. I already siad in 3. Plus the PS3 already has multiple video out ports. They will support people with older TVs but they'll probably say it'll be better to play on HDTV and they'll be right. Then they'll probably recommend their HDTVs which isn't so bad as Sony makes great HDTVs.
Quote:In a recent interview, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia's managing director, Michael Ephraim pointed out the possibility of the next PlayStation console to completely avoid the hassle of region locking its videogames. He compared such a move to work similarly as games on PSP. Or recent HDTV's that are now shunning the PAL and NTSC standards set for UK, Americas and the rest of the world.
Speaking about this interesting idea, he said " If you look at the fact that it(PS3) will support high-definition TV, which will be a global standard, there's a good likelihood that it will be global region, as for example we've done with the PSP."
The market for import games could get bigger...and the demand for Mods could decrease perhaps...
The market for imports would get bigger. I always thought region locking was a stupid idea. I mean if I were to release a product I would think that doing it worldwide would be better as the buzz would be worldwide news. But as far as demand for mods going down, I doubt it. People would still want mods for the purpose of playing backed up games.
