I was trying to back up the movie Alexander and got "unspecified target error" Just before that i had sucess with a back up of Robots (go figure) In my log theres an initial error because i didnt change out the disk right away . But loaded a Fuji DVD-R , and the burning restarted ok. On my sony vaio , i recently updated my Matshita firmware, and just reinstalled Nero. Any help to figure out what i need to do to streamline my Backups , would be a big help to this Newbie. Thanks

Heres the log.

Nero API version: 6.0.0.28
- my God that version is out of the bible, update to latest 6.x

version, 6.6.0.16 (Update-Package 1) from here - Nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.Nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php

- i think your burner's firmware is up to date according to this - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1780 however your firmware is not recognising the media you're using. just so we know what media you've got there, download dvd identifier (free) - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id... and use it to 'identify' one of those discs you're trying to burn with. it won't help you to use the discs but it will help us see what you're using and we can maybe suggest media that will work. i'm guessing you're using media that's newer than when your firmware was last updated (which was October 2004 according to that link above). This happens with burners, they get superceded when newer models come along and the older ones can no longer keep up with newer media.

here's another thread with somebody with same drive having same firmware problem -

- this is what your burner's saying about the blank media you're using there. This 3line paragraph is an example of what you'd see if the firmware could recognise the media properly -

It is usually recommended to burn at half the rating of your blanks. If you have 8X blanks then burn at 4X etc. Also set your target size to 4300 so you don't burn too close to the edge of the disc. I use DVD Shrink instead of Nero, but if your going to use it, it should be a current version for best results.

Creaky is the resident Nero master, so if you follow his suggestions you should be good to go.

Young grasshopper says " I see ". I just looked into dvdshrink and i see under preferences, there is a button "I/O" And there is a check box for Enable burning with Nero. If i uncheck that , will DVD Shrink burn the back up for me. I didnt know DVD Shrink was its own stand alone burning program.

No DVD Shrink is not a burner, it has no burn engine, but after you manipulate your movie and click the big Backup! button and new window pops up. You can direct DVD Shrink to enable burning after encoding with DVD Decrypter like so:

As I said earlier I don't prefer to use Nero, so this is my most common setup.

Re: DVDIdentifier and Matsushita Uj-811
The UJ-8x series slim line panasonic has never been able to read disc information with DVD Identifier. Not even the newest UJ-825 4x± slim slot load.

Any suggestions besides finding a good source for reliable media?

How about DVD Decrypter in ISO->read mode? It should give you something like this.

Put a blank disc in and try again please. But to answer your media question the Fuji's, if made in Japan should be good, Sony and Maxell (MIJ) are good also. Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, and Verbatim are some other good ones.
