first of all, don't get me wrong; i love PS, and the PS3 looks smashing. however, i'm hearing sick rumors of changes that are going (or already) made to the PS3. i hear it's only going to be compatible on hi-def tv's. someone please tell me there's some authentic publication disputing this.
there's also talk of including some technology to stop game sharing. finally, what is the release date for the console? i read (from google news) that it might be in Dec. 2006. if all these are true, then there's no way on earth, heaven or hell i'm gonna wait that long to buy such a limiting console.
i'd like to know other people's reaction to this.
cheers.

Just ignore those rumors man, it's just people trying to catch some attention... If these kinds of changes would be pressed through, sony wouldn't be able to sell enough ps3's to justify it's research and development costs, or to make enough profit and such, so i don't think they'll be making changes like those that easily.
Bottom line : All you kids here shouldn't throw fits each time some loser starts some bullsh*t rumor about ridiculous changes to a console, with no proof to back it up.

I have heard similar things such as limited backwards compatibility and overheating issues.I did hear that the release date would be around spring of 06 so I guess I'll just have to settle on the closest thing (xbox 360).

Well, gamesharing will be difficult as it is because the PS3 is using blu-ray technology. Do you have a blu-ray burner? No. In fact, you don't even have a blu-ray player.
Any additional ant-piracy technology will sooner or later be exploited.
As far as I know, the PS3 will be compatible with regular television, as well as having full HD support.
If you don't understand this, I'll give you an example that might help your confusion. Look at the NFL. Most games are broadcasted in Hi-Def, but you can still watch the game even if you don't have a HDTV. Get it?
Hopefully that solved your questions.

The game shring thing is just rumour. They won't do it. They're already getting complaints for doing it with music. They won't do the same with the PS3 games. And it will be able to play on any TV but HDTV gives a better output. And I already knew the PS3 would have overheating problems. When I saw the first pics I saw no holes for cooling fans so I immediately knew they were going for passive heat dissipation. I didn't think it would be very cool because of that reason. The only way I thought of was to make it "breathe". Note that I made this up as a joke but I thought it would be better if they make the PS3 split in half below the CD tray slightly then there would be an air intake along the whole space and suck in cool air into the system and dispell hot air out the back. It sounds cool and would solve their overheating problems. It would have to change the design though. And to blueboy4 Sony said it would have Av cables, etc for oler TVs. Thus they're not forcing everyone to get a HDTV for the PS3. It was some time ago so I can't really find the article but if you search online for pics of the PS3. Get one of the back. Zoom in and look carefully. You'll see one that says AV Multi out. That's the one that Sony has been using since the old PS. It's for the cables. I remember US had a different standard(I live in Asia). But I stick the Yellow/Red/White cable for video and audio into that port and stick it into my non HDTV. That's the best assurance you can get unless you find the article. It was around the time of E3 this year.

Heating issues are not not new in Sony's game consoles, as my slimline PS2 barely disipates heat. But I don't believe the PS3 will have huge heating problem, cause it would be plain stupid from Sony to risk such a fancy hardware. I'm not to crazy about bluray, though. Sony's latest games like God of War and GT4 have been using dual layer media just to fit useless content into the games (like a God of War making of). Makes me me wonder what would they do with a 50GB bluray disc. Be sure to expect lots of useless backstage and developer footage, as well as hours of what could have made it into the game. And the best part is that they'll probably end up charging us $90 for each game.

But think about it. 50 GB for $90 is a pretty good offer. It'll be 5 Dual layer DVDs. If there was an XBox 360 game that took up 5 10GB DVDs would it cost $90???? Standard price for one DVD of a game is usually $50. So let's say they sell their game for that price would they lose money?????

It's not that big of deal to have large games in multiple disks. And I don't believe that there are going to be games big enough to take more than 2 DVD9 disks anytime soon. Unless developers fit a lot of useless content, as I mentioned before. Actually I suspect the PS3 won't have bluray games for a while. That, because the transition to DVD games in the early days of the PS2 was boosted by the rising DVD movie market. If the PS3 is released in 2006, bluray will still be far from accesible and it should take time for this type of media to become mainstream.

By 2006 Sony should at least have one first party developed game. That will use Bluray to help push it.

Quote: i read (from google news) that it might be in Dec. 2006
K in L.A e3 presentation the release date said in spring. Now we say thats in Japan, In north america the ps3 is probably to be released in late spring -early fall. No way will it take a game console to take 11 months. It's common sence. PS3 has to hit all contries before christmas i would think.

1)The PS3 supports from 480i to 1080p. Thats pretty much every TV ever made. You DO NOT need a Hi-Def TV to play PS3.
2)All the protection crap was dropped...and even if the make some different protection...there will ALWAYS be a way to get around it. As new protection technology is developed, so is the technology used to bypass that protection.
3)Expect a Spring-Summer launch.
