Hey there everybody. I have been reading alot of threads about DVD shrink burn failurs and I am having the same problem! I have never had any trouble burning with DVD shrink before but now they always fail usually at around 25%(my frisbie collection is getting quite big).

>I have tried 3 different types of dvds without success.
>I have DVD shrink set at a custom 4300M limit.
>I am currently using Nero 6.0.0.8 but i have tried Nero 7 and that didnt help.
>I have tried using dvd shrink and i have also tried taking the files and using nero on its own as well as making an iso file and using dvd decrypter.

I suspect that my burner has had it. Can anybody help.

Here is the Nero error report.

Recorder: <HP DVD Writer 640b> Version: E152 - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.6.0.8
YOur Nero is a few versions behind, current version is 6.6.0.16 and I can't seem to find firmware for you burner.

CdRomPeripheral : HP DVD Writer 640b atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
DiskPeripheral : ST3160023AS atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off
Your DMA is off, here is a guide written by alkohol on how to fix it:
((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver ?for Win XP users?))

A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
D) double left click on your DVD burner or your dvd-rom drive
E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer
F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the ?IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?

(A) left click on + sign of "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"
(B) double left click on either Secondary or Primary IDE Channel (burner's driver are usually "Secondary Channel")
(C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!
***NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka Primary IDE Channel already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the above steps.

Burn no higher than 4x especially since you have crappy media, good media 8x shouldn't be a problem.

Hey-

I too have a HP DVD-RW 640b. I think that is the problem...

I have a new HP Media Center computer and these LightScribe drives don't like DVD-Shrink I am sorry to say....

The drive ends up being very very slow. I had to do a complete system recovery to get it to work. Then I tried DVD-Shrink/Nero Demo and the same problem reoccurs.

You know what to do, Nero log please. It's in programfiles\AHead\NEro
NeroHistory. If you don't know how to find things just search 'Nerohistory'. I will only need the very last section and you can 'differentiate' the sections via this thing:

====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======

And remember to edit out your serial number, it'll usually start with 1A2 or something.

I don't think it's the drive though.

I think I am just going to avoid Nero. I will burn with DVD Decryptor and see how it goes.

I rarely use Nero, but have used it a couple of times with problems...I just prefer the DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink combo.

Nero can be finiky, and usually requires constant updates. Sometimes they fix other issues besides the main ones listed when they put out an update. The using DVD Decrypter to burn with DVD Shrink seems to be the most reliable, easy to use, least likey to fail, method. Nero has some good programs, like recode 2, but i keep going back to DVD Shrink every time i try another program. Nero is usually the program running when i make a coaster. It doesn't happen very often anymore, but i remember disc at once causing coaster at once more than a few times for me.
