A gig of memory is good but your using a bit too much of it...close down any unneeded progs to free up some before encoding and burning.

You are burning to close to the edge. Change your target size to 4300.

Fuji is generally good if made in Japan.

These are good suggestions to get you started burning again, but others will be by with more suggestions as I have probably overlooked something.

Here is an alkohol written guide on how to fix DMA in case you're unsure:

((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver ?for Win XP users?))

A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
D) double left click on your DVD burner or your dvd-rom drive
E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer
F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the ?IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?

(A) left click on + sign of "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"
(B) double left click on either Secondary or Primary IDE Channel (burner's driver are usually "Secondary Channel")
(C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!
***NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka Primary IDE Channel already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the above steps.

Like LOCOENG said you are writing too close to the edge, here is how you fix it in case you don't know:

In Shrink go to Edit>Preference>under the first tab scroll down in box until you reach 'custom'>then in box beside it type in 4300.

This is fine if you have an external drive, if you don't then you have a problem.

Thanks for the replies.

"In Shrink go to Edit>Preference>under the first tab scroll down in box until you reach 'custom'>then in box beside it type in 4300."

Do i have to do this as i have burned quite a few dvd's without changing this. I have used your advice and changed it though.

Also what can i do about this problem that you have stated, because i don't a have an external drive.

"This is fine if you have an external drive, if you don't then you have a problem. "

Anyway i've done everything else and i'll give an update once i try another burn.

You don't have to do it in the same sense you don't have to go to a docter when you sick. You will get better quality burns if you do and will probably last longer.

The atapi thing:
Quote:

I think you've got your jumpers installed incorrectly meaning you probably have to drives on 'master', usually the DVD burner should be the only thing on master. Are you sure you intalled your drives correctly? You can't just take it out of the box b/c they have the jumpers on a default that isn't 'master' and your first drive, the one that came w/ the comp, will usually be installed as the master so you have to change that as well.

I checked and the DVD-RW Drive is on Master and the CD-RW Drive is on Slave. I tried a burn after i did everything mentioned above but another fail.

All the Nero 7 logs are coming through this way you can check other posts and they read the same. My log shows this also whether I am using internal/external drive. It is something in the program.

Oh i'm sorry I didn't know, I don't have Nero 7 and I guess I didn't recognize it, haven't seen '7' all that much.

Do you think they'll change it? Is it a mistake that they'll fix or is it just like that?

@GlueEater

As to the Nero7 lack of Atapi, I thought is was my computer and then started checking the 7 logs being posted and realized it was all of them. I even reformated thinking there was something wrong. Just posted to creaky about this, so now we will both be looking out to see what is going on with the new Nero.

@arnie

Have you had successful burns with Nero 7? I have but I've never looked at the log to see if mine says the same.

@harrysk

Have you tried to burn with DVD Decrypter instead of Nero? If so, any luck?

@LocoEng

Yes my burns with 7 have all been successful. However just went back and put in Nero 6 to see what it would show, and it comes up

Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI

File 'Drivers\PXHELP20.SYS': Ver=2.03.28a, size=20640 bytes, created 3/11/2005 5:28:13 PM (Prassi/Veritas driver for win 2K)

With 7 it showed ATAPI, detected: ?

And it did not show atapi.sys drivers

Something is definitely different. However if you are using Recode it will not show the atapi.sys drivers in the Existing Drivers at the end. Comes up looking like 7

I will try to burn with DVD Decrypter but i do not want to waste any more dvds so i've placed an order for some DVD-RWs - when they arrive i'll have a try.

I have also noticed something else, the first log that i put in this post had the following error:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
"Could not perform end of Disc-at-once"
&
"Could not perform EndSession"
---------------------------------------------------------------------

But the second log that i posted after making the changes you stated had the error:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
"Power calibration error"
---------------------------------------------------------------------

What does this mean???

Power Calibration Error in Nero

Power Calibration Error

Error code:

Quote:
4:18:59 AM #25 CDR -1106 File Writer.cpp, Line 301
Power calibration error

4:18:59 AM #26 Text 0 File ThreadedTransfer.cpp, Line 229

EndDAO: Last written address was 31

4:18:59 AM #29 Phase 38 File APIProgress.cpp, Line 253
Burn process failed at 4x (5,540 KB/s)

Cause:

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Solution:

This error can be caused in conjunction with some (cheap) medias, try to burn them alternative with lower speed or switch to another brand of discs.

If you cant solve this error by using recommend medias, pls. try out these steps , if they fail, drive is defect, you should claim it immediate to your dealer.

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.

It is recommend that device should be connected to secondary IDE port as master. Dont use fast ATA 133/166/233 and 266, unit should connected with delivered UDMA-2 cable(40pin)

Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.

First deinstall all your burnersoftware(s), also clean registry*.
(*it is recommend to use cleaning tools from NERO:
General Clean Tool http://www.nero.com/en/631940828445001.html
Registry Checker and DriverClean tool http://www.nero.com/en/631938356417810.html
InCD Clean Tool http://www.nero.com/en/631938356212815.html
Nero 5 Clean Toolnero clean tool http://www.nero.com/en/631938364095950.html )

Install actual mainboard driver (Busmaster/ Chipset driver). Contact in this case manufacturer of your mainboard. For test you can also try to burn without DMA mode, ( only possible under Windows XP and Windows 2000 ) in the device manager - "IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers", you can switch from DMA to PIO mode. Pls. notice: If problems caused by NFORCE Chipset drivers, you should better reinstall MS standard IDE drivers.

More than one installed burnersoftwares can cause problems (**some softwares replace ASPI driver by their own! ) so install only one, especially actual trial release of NERO [ http://www.nero.com ] and check burn project again.

**If needed, install actual ASPI Driver (contact manufacturer of your burnersoftware e.g. www.nero.com )

Use our recommended medias , with other medias there`s no guarantee, they will be written correctly and with maximum speed.

For Problems with InCD, pls. contact Nero support. Be informed device works only with InCD, Mt.Rainier (e.g. directCD) is not supported.

You can deactivate for test (only with Windows XP) "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service", go to menu "start" > "settings" > "administration" > "services", search "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service", rightclick and deactivate "starttyp".

I tried another burn but with a DVD-RW (Imation DVD+RW 4x) and it worked so i tried it with another DVD (Datawrite DVD-R 8x - Printable Surface) but i crashed again.

Then i tried another type of media that i had lying around (Datawrite DVD-R 8x - Yellow Top) and it worked perfectly so i think it was the media.

But the funny thing is that i've been using these Datawrites for ages (burned about 70 discs) and no crashes and they are all from the same batch cause i bought 8 packs (25 in each) and it started to crash about half way through the 3rd pack?

I'll open another pack and see if it was just that pack that wa defective.

Datawrite use some truly appalling disc manufacturers... they're yet another company whose products are a pick 'n mix of quality, snippet from here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/202427 -
Quote:

I've also been unsuccessful in burning with the DVD Shrink software. In fact, I cannot back up an existing DVD with Nero either; though I've successfully burned other sorts of data. I'm unsure whether the problem is with the computer, software, burner, or media. I'm using Memorex DVDR+ with an HP Media Center ~2004 model. I've been concerned in the past that the burner is faulty; it seems to become unresponsive at times for no reason. However, this weekend, determined to successful back up a dvd for the first time, I destroyed about 10 blank discs with different combinations of Nero, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter. I can succuessfully analyze and shrink a DVD, but the burn is never successful; even at speeds as low as 2.4X. I'm wondering what it is about that type of data that my burner won't accept? It either burns and returnds a data verification error, or never finishes burning - I've noticed some of the discs look as though the laser faded in and out, leaving an uneven looking burn. I have successfully burned other data though, which makes me think the problem might not be the burner. Any suggestions?

@dhaynes

Make sure that your firmware is up to date for your burner. You can look here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

You can find your burner's model# and firmware version in DVD Decrypter, by going to Tools->Drive->Capabities.

Also make sure that when burning you are not multi-tasking. Close all unneccessary progs.

Try another brand of media, Memorex are not noted for giving consistent burns. Better media is Verbatim, Sony, Fuji (Made in Japan) and Maxell.
