Hey badoo, I have one on the way. I'm wondering if I should sell this one on ebay and spend a little bit more on a good one? Have you had any problems with it? I have a v7 so it may be a litte different.

OK, the only way to know if its a clone is if it has the word "muppet" on it. I think thats the word...you can find that out. I know it starts with an m. If it says that, it's a clone. I'll try to find out for sure.

your GT4 is a DVD-5 rip though correct? your Magic isn't gonna boot a dual layered burn of any game.

Hey KC, which Magic chip are you saying doesn't boot dual layer?
The Magic V Plus definately does. Is that the same chip that we are
talking about?

it's been my experience and understanding that the any of the Magic line chips will only boot original dual layer games and not burnt ones. your saying the plus will boot a backed up dual layer?

I can't say for sure because I have never had to boot a burned DVD-9,
but everything I have read had said that it will. I should try it and then let you know. I'll try God of War. I'll post my results.

thx, I'll be waiting on the results. I've been installing chips for about 7 yrs now and my best understand has been the DMS with the Toxic OS is the only chip that will direct boot a dual layer burnt game. other chips will with a PTP patch but the magic won't for some reason. I've got allot of old 'customers' with Magic chips who want new installs now.
kc
EDIT: acording the the MFG they are:
Compatible with DVD-R , DVD+R , DVD-RW , DVD+RW
Compatible with DVD-9
that doesnt include DVD-R DL/DVD+R DL which are only 8.5GB

So if it turns out that I can't boot DL games I'm upgrading. There is no way I am staying with Magic V if that is the case. And I'm getting a
refund because the site that I bought from says that it boots DL burns.
Now that you bring this to my attention I'm getting nervous. We are going to see. I can't get the game until tomorrow.
How do I uninstall a chip if it turns out that I can't boot DL games?
With Magic V Plus it should be OK since there are only 12 wires to uninstall. Thanks.

you've got 12 wires because the chip is built so you direct solder a few connections directly to the mother board. removal is as simple as desoldering the connections with solder wick making sure you don't over heat the board.
if your upgrading go with the DMS4 Pro, and if your not comfy with installation get the EZI clip on installation, they work but I've done enough installs that the $$$ differences isn't worth while to me, i can mod V4 and up in about an hour. v1-v3 on the other hand.......................

I'll try that chip if mine doesn't work. I meant to try burning God of War today but I didn't realize I didn't have any DL DVD's left. I'm an idiot. I'll post my results ASAP.

Yes, I'd love to see how others with the same chip come out. I'll try
another if you try God of War, I can't get it for a little while. I wonder if there is a difference between the PAL and the NTSC when it comes to the chip?DOes anyone know?

the Magic is automatic region selective, it will play NTSC or PAL.
when you say "it loads up" do you mean you get a PS2 splash screen then black from then on???? if so this is the chips inabilities :) not your burn job, doing different games will make no difference nor will different media (+/-R DL) with different book types, I've tried em all.
EDIT: For what it's worth, God of War can be stripped of the 'bonus movies' (like the making of GOW) and fit onto a DVD-5 with full game quality and playability so you can still go that route with the Magic chip. i played the entire -5 disk (in the CD/DVD drive) as well as the -5 ISO and the -9 ISO from the HDD and all play perfectly with the magic chips.

There are only a couple modchips that support DL PS2 backups at present, the DMS 4, Matrix Infinity, and the Duo2SE. I don't believe the Magic does, but it might. With these chips you should be able to make a straight burn of a dual layer game. I burned GT4 to Verbatim DVD+R DL disc and it plays perfectly. Make sure you enable DVD-9 support for your particular chip.

Well the chip doesn't support DVD-9 originals, the PS2 does. It'll do that without any type of mod.

DVD-9 means dual layer. They are the same thing. DVD-9 as defined by AD: One form of DVD discs that means a single-sided dual-layer DVD disc. DVD-9 can hold approximately 7.95 gigabytes of data, even though marketers like to use the 8.5GB value instead, but this is misleading and is calculated by using so-called "Japanese gigabytes" which means that gigabyte is calculated as 1,000 megabytes, but in real computer terminology, gigabyte is 1,024 megabytes.
DVD-9 DVD-Video discs are problematic for DVD-R owners, because the cheap, writable single-layer DVDR discs can only hold the same amount of data that DVD-5 discs contain, due technical reasons. However, there are several ways to copy a DVD-9 disc to a standard, single layer DVD-R or DVD+R disc -- we have several guides available how to do this on our guide section.
DVD-9 is nowadays often used as the marketing term for dual layer DVD-R and DVD+R discs and use of that name is quite appropriate as the dual layer recordable discs can hold exactly the same amount of data as "pressed" DVD-9 discs can.

not all chips will even play DVD-9 originals. the Magic line being one of them, the V3.1 (and a few late production V3) will read originals but not back ups, prior versions wont even read originals and do not have a sleep function built in so your PS2 is -9 incompatable with these chips in. Oh and the only Metal Gear thats dual layered so far is MGS2 Substance with MGS2 Sons of Liberty and MGS3 Snake Eater being DVD-5s, i'm sure the new Substance for Snake Eater will most likely be -9 as well and should be out next month.
