Working on transfering some of my rare OOP vhs to dvd. Got things captured, edited, and have a nice, beautiful 24GB raw DV .avi file on my HD.

Had originally planned to use dvdit for transcoding to dvd and menus/chapters - but the quality when doing that was pretty bad.

so I did some research and tried cce - the resulting .mpv quality is much better, but when importing to dvdit for menus/chapters and burning, dvdit thinks the files are noncompliant (warning on import) and tries to transcode them when burning. argh.

I've made certain that I'm not exceding the 9.8 mbps limit - audio is pcm (so thats 1.6 mbps) and I'm using the following settings:

CCE:
MPEG-2 for DVD, multipass VBR with 3 passes, V/C at 30
29.97 fps
Max bitrate 8100
Avg 8000
min 2000
2:3 pulldown
NO deinterlacing or 4:1:1 > 4:2:2 interpolation
4:3 aspect

I've been throught the dvdit settings and there doesn't appear to be any settings that are conflicting or might force transcoding.

Any ideas?

Well your bitrate is Too High, Because you have the bitrate set very close to the Max bitrate the bitrate will Likely Spike at Times Over the Max bitrate which is Probably One of the Reasons why it is being seen as Non Compliant...

Also you Do "NOT" select "2:3 Pulldown" with 29.976fps Material as 2:3 Pulldown is For Converting Progressive 23.976fps Material to 29.976fps which could also be a Reason why the File is beeing seen as Non Compliant....

Also you should select "Mpeg-1 Layer-2" as the audio Format Not "LPCM" as LPCM Uses up WAY too Much Disk space.....

Even with DV Material you wouldn"t need to set the Average bitrate over about 6000kbs as any higher than that will just Increase the File size without necessarilly Increaseing the Quality..You also don"t need to do 3 Passes when useing Such a High bitrate unless your source Material Is very Noisy and/Or of very Low Quality, With Good Quality Video one Pass is usually enough when you have a Lot of bitrate to work with....

So Just Change these settings then the File should be seen as DVD Compliant By DVDit but if Not then Maybe try a Different Program Like Maybe "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" which is what I use which can do anything That DVDit Can do (Accept encode which is a Good Thing) and I do all My encodeing in CCE and DVDLab allways accepts the Files ....
