This thread is to discuss the Playstation 3 Ram, and how it is or isn?t better than xbox360's ram.
Now I will start off by saying which ram I believe is better. I know the ps3 Ram is better than Xbox 360's ram.
Do you want to know why?
-It uses XDR Ram. Next year, Toshiba is going to release these new XDR ram cards. According to this article.http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/peripherals/storage/toshiba-first-...
XDR ram is 12x faster than the typical PC ram.
-ps3 ram operates at 3.2 GHz.
ps3 ram
256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz -CPU
256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz-GPU
xbox360
512 MB GDDR3 RAM @ 700 MHz DDR (SHARED)
Unified architecture
What do you notice?
ps3 256 mb ram CPU ram operates at 3.2 GHz.
360's 512mb shared ram operates at 700 MHz.
-This is an example of how ps3 creates more with little. Clearly the ps3's 256mb CPU Ram operates way faster than the xbox360
.Even if 360's Ram in unified.
Ps3 CPU ram beats xbox360's CPU ram. The better ram, the faster, and better performance. Ps3 will be faster, and have better performance than the 360.
xbox360 shares its ram.
This slows down 360's CPU. Like intergrated G-cards do with Computers. Intergrated G-cards share the computers ram, i know i have one. This slows down my computer alote.

It's great to know that coming half a year later, the PS3 will indeed bring better hardware than what the 360 has to offer today. Hope it's worth waiting.

The current games seam to suck using the xdr memory. Some fighting game I saw on the 360 at target used sony 5 frame interleave on 3 frames per second. So, the consoles memory bandwidth does not get to the geforce 7800 at all. The thing about cell technology as well is that it cannot commmunicate with the memory in the ps3 either until an entire chain of calculations are performed. However, grammatically two's complimentary coding scemes might be to hard without an assembler.

shared things dont slow the CPU down at all. shared things are better, because the control buses can use the shared memory 2 coordinate things better and offer bandwith advantages. because for e.g instead of having 2 peices of info in 2 ram sticks. like the PS3 has, it only has 2 have it once in the 360 RAM. saving resuorces, and more CPu cycles as it doesnt need 2 be accessed more than once either at a time.
and im SHOCKED that nobody took into account the latency's of the XDR RAM. the higher the frequency of ALL RAM, the higher the latencies are. higher latencies are bad.
ie. 400 MHZ 2-2-2-5 RAM is faster than RAM with slacker timings. eg. 3-3-3-7 or 3-4-4-8. when your buying RAM, good RAM brands will boast about tight timings for the speeds they run at. e.g. for 400 Mhz, the best timings are 2-2-2-5, but for 533Mhz, the best timings availaible (last time i looked) are 3-3-3-6. better timing RAM costs more obviously thou.
Its important most specifically in this case thou, because latency refers to the number of CPU clocks to access the data in the RAM. so a latency of 2 for RAS to CAS section for example or pure CAS latency, means it only uses 2 CPU clocks for that specifc thing. which is better because its faster and more resourceful than a higher latency timing.
3.2 GHZ RAM must have VERY high latencies, meaning that LOTS of CPU clocks will be wasted on accessing the data in the RAM, the RAM itself is very fast indeed, but accessing it will waste many CPU cycles, lowering CPU performance. theyve sacficied CPU resourses for increased RAM speed. which doesnt make sense really, as CPU performance is far more important that RAM speeds/performance.
RAM isnt half as important for games as the GPU. or the processor. so they shouldnt boast about it boosting performance a lot, because it simply wont matter that much.
eg. fps wise, a PC that has 512 MB of 400Mhz DDR RAM, and is then upgraded to a gig of faster DDR2 RAM, will only have a average frame increase of approx 3-4 fps.
im not saying that XDR ram sux, no it is very good and very fast. but the fact of the matter is, is its just not needed at the mo, because it sucks the life out of the processor because of the very high timings it will have for it to function.

All this spec talk in the end doesnt mean diddly squat.The xbox was faster and betterlooking than the ps2 but it didnt matter because just like ANUBIS said its all about the games/software.The difference isnt enough to make you go one way or another,software is what truly matter and we dont know too much of what the ps3 has to offer and we know the 360 has great games in store.Im not saying the ps3 doesnt have great games in store we just dont know of so many right now.I can name a few heavenly sword,metal gear solid 4 and there are others but we'll just wait and see how they compare once all systems are out.Threads like this talk specs and all that but its better to judge the console without knowing and just basing it off feel of what you like the most and what performs the best for your gaming needs.

do what i got to do to expose the truth and that is sony makes subpar systems but has fanboys dying to play it so they need not step their game up to win this war.Out of whack fans who obsess with specs only when it benefits them keeps them on top,the oringinal x box crapped on the ps2 specs and that didnt win the war so why all the sudden do the fanboys care about specs...oh i forgot its because they have to take whatever sony does and magnify it to make them look better.Ignore the lies and lap up whatever sony says,its pathetic that they have grown men at their feet beleiving no matter what they say and even when they own up their lies these grown ass men still listen and cling to every word sony says.Lets be honest as long as it says sony on it sony fans will buy the ps3.I for one think it will be agreat console,i just get irritated how grown ass people turn their head at the facts.I dont think that you are a fan boy(TTownKLWN) but i would expect any person with half a brain to be upset when being lied to like a dumb child,but obviosuly thats cool with the sony breed of fans.TO each his own,of course im bitter towards sony all they do is overhype consoles and NEVER deliver what they promise.I keep hearing people say thye arent fans of either console but just a gamer...before your a gamer your a person and people dont like being disrespected.I like having my pride guess you dont!
