Suddenly, my DVD Shrink does not want to work anymore. I tried everything even re-installing a fresh program but still does not work.

Any Free alternative programs you might suggest? Afterdown suggests:

* DVDFab Decrypter (free DVD ripper)
* AnyDVD (excellent DVD ripper that handles virtually all modern copy protections)
* ImgBurn (DVD image burning software from the original author of DVD Decrypter, free)

...but these are trial versions and I do not want to pay $30 or more for any of these programs.

There's nothing wrong with DVDshrink, because it's not updated any longer it can't crack the new DVD copy protection being put on new releases, but it's still very useful so don't discard it just yet.

Of the three alternatives you list, the only one you have to pay for is anydvd. If you want a free app that's like anydvd (not quite as good, but is updated often to handle new copy protection), goto dvd43.com and get dvd43, the website will describe to it works.

DVDfab decrypter is a whole movie ripper only that does it's job well, and is constantly updated.

DVDdecrypter is a ripper plus an ISO burner, decrypter is also no longer updated and so sometimes it too gets stuck, but when used with anydvd or dvd43 it'll rip the DVD

ImgBurn is an ISO burning utility that also does it's job very well.

So go ahead and get them all (anydvd comes with a 21 day free trial), learn how to use them, when used in the right combination they'll give you you're backup. You dont't state what movie your trying to backup, but try using DVDshrink with anydvd or dvd43(not both they conflict with each other) running in the backround and see if that works. You can also try using DVDfab or DVDdecrypter with anydvd or dvd43, then open the ripped files with shrink and use it as you normally would.
All these apps can be gotten here and have guides available.

Good advice buy clone and aydvd with upgrades on AnyDVD, combo price I pd 60 US. Then you can use shrink or fab or DDD. WELL worth the price and few problems there after. Slysoft.com

I've read good things about ShrinkTo5 (http://www.shrinkto5.com/ or read more about it here: http://www.justinsguide.com/2005/09/16/shrinkto5/).

It is supposed to be an alternative to DVD Shrink. It's free, does the same job as Shrink (rip whole DVD or just the main movie, compresses down to DVD-5, etc). And it's Open Source too!

I haven't tried it myself yet, so I can't fully recommend it yet. But maybe it could be something to try if your DVD Shrink keeps messing up.

I got excited when I read Shrinkto5 was open source, but did a check on it, and it got bad reviews. Here is a copy/paste from some of the folks. Total score is 2 out of 5 with 18 votes:

I haven't tried the ShrinkTo5 program yet like I mentioned before, so I can't fully endorse it. But I've seen a lot of mixed reviews for it. (for example, http://fileforum.betanews.com/review/1125418990/1/view). Maybe it works for some people, but not others?

I'm a little disappointed that they are asking for a $1 donation before the burn part of the software is unlocked. Is it possible to shrink it with this program and then burn with Nero or some other burning program?
