I hope someone can help me. When I am in the backup stage of copying a dvd, my computer gets to about half way thens gives a loud "click" then shuts down totally (only if the dvd has the encoding protection that shrink usually removes anyway). Can anyone help me? it has only started doing this recently.

This sounds like a overheating problem. Take the case off and see if the cpu fan is loaded with dust and dirt. I usually use canned air and blow mine out occasionally. I also blow out the power supply and case air inlets. I like the interior of my PC to be as clean as the outside.
I am not a computer expert so hopefully one of the other many smart folk here will add something.

Shrink uses a lot of your system resources during the encoding process.

I agree with fasfrank, sounds like overheating to me too. After following his advice, you may want to put a small fan in front of the computer during your backups. I do with mine.

While you have the covers off, you might want to see if one or more of the cooling fans have stopped working.
