Ok, well, I have been messing with all of this for well over a month now, and the fact I have not found continuous success at something that should be so freaking easy is pounding the newbie label right into my forhead, or maybe that's my hand because I am so frustrated with all of this. I have read, tried, followed, installed, deleted, adjusted things according to many different angles of advice and yet something is still being missed.

Basic info... I am not a total idiot on a computer and most generally can figure things out and learn, so please, help and please be patient as I explain and then take advice and apply it and respond.

I have an HP pavilion zd8000, with MS,XP. It is one with the Media Center Edition. For most aspects, I love the thing, I can do so many things.

My roommate has a regular old pc with MS, XP also. From him, I gathered how he did things and tried to simulate as the easiest and fastest start. Nope. Something in a setting or two is different somewhere and I cannot figure it out. He uses Shrink 3.2 and Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator Vs. 6 for the rip and burn process and has no problems. Using Shrink, it seems to rip everything just fine, and I have followed many people's guides at everything from whole disk to editing and getting rid of little things like german language applications, etc. Everything seems great, but when I try to burn with Roxio, it always pops off with the file is too big for the disk, (its not, it is usually around 4.4 and works fine on roommates), in addition to the size, the same error pop up also says something to the effect: that roxio needed to convert it to a usd file... or something other than an iso, which is what I wanted. I have gone property to property and setting by setting comparing how his setting are with mine and changing mine to simulate his. No luck. The only thing I can figure is there is another setting somewhere in this wonderful computer that is set different and the difference allows him stressless downloading and me failure.

I have also downloaded what seems to be an arsenal. I have just about any necessary tool for ripping and burning cd's dvd's, ps2 games etc, but I am missing something. I really like the dvddecrpter and have had better luck with it until I tried Duece Bigalow, european gigolow. It ripped ok, but said there was over 7.0, I figured a doulble layer right? So I used decryptor, it only wanted to burn the mds file and not the iso file... god help me... so I went back to shrink 3.2, tried that.... no luck, tried dvdfab... no luck mean while, to test, I gave it to my roommate to burn and he had no problems. Good lord, I know this is long, but can someone work with me here and help me learn, cause it only takes me once to learn... plus how to do the damned ps2 thing too. I have tried it all. And I am well aware pirating is illegal and I have no intentions of any illegal activity, only to learn to properly apply the process in a nice, stressfree environment in which beer flows cold...etc....

Thanks to anyone and everyone who has the patience to help me through this... really. This newbie dirt stamp on my forehead just doesnt belong, but until I can kick this things ass....man...newbie....damn.

Mike

It seems you are making life hard for yourself...personally I would get rid of Roxio, I've heard it creates alot of conflicts on a system. Secondly, I think that I've read somewhere that the Media Center edition of XP is a little persnickety when it comes to copying copy protected discs(unsubstantiated at this time).

As for your arsenal, you have DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, both are excellent programs but are no longer being updated, so you will need to give them a boost via DVDFab Decrypter or DVD43 or AnyDVD. DVDFab Decrypter is a free program and can be found here http://www.dvdidle.com and DVD43 is also free and can be found here http://www.dvd43.com . AnyDVD is the best program out of the bunch and can be found here http://www.slysoft.com , but it is not free. If you choose to go with AnyDVD forget about DVD43, they are very similar in the way that they work, but they do not play well together if they are on the same machine.

Here are some guides for using these programs they are both easy to follow:

http://www.dvdplusvideo.com look at scubapetes guides.
and here are some more excellent guides for you http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm .

Programs convert into their languages...Alcohol 120% makes images into a MDS files as can DVDDecrypter and then burn it and plays just fine.CloneDVD2 can convert to a UDF file and burns that image to the disk. Here the thing, if you wanted to make copy from the backup copy, you will have to use the same program or another one that makes the same images cause not all programs understand those images. As for Roxio v.6, I never used mine, but if I used Shrink first then Roxio Disk Creator Classic, Select source (folder w/files shrunk), Highlight and drag into Project (Data field)it should do just fine. You will get a message that says your project contains 4GB of data and that no more data can be added to it! Just click Ok. Good luck

Hey catman

I've had roxio 5,6,7, and just got 8, I've used them all with no problems with the exception 5 (a winxp campatibility isue). It sounds like you use roxio to burn ISO images, but you don't describe how you do it, so I'll describe how I do.

Once I have the ISO, I right click on it and choose 'open', version 6 says 'copy to cd'(I think, but choose the upper most choice in bold). Doing so should cause roxio's 'disk copier' application to launch, you should have a window consisting of on the left a source file identified as a disk image-DVD video folder, on the right side is your destination location, choose the recorder option. Once the recorder option has been chosen, underneath you should be asked to insert blank/valid media, insert your disk and let the recorder read it, you should get a message that states 'contents:blank recordable disk (DVD+R or DVD-R)', at this point make your write speed and number of copies selections then press the burn icon.

This is the important observation to make: When you insert your media it must state "'contents:blank recordable disk (DVD+R or DVD-R)", this will tell you if the media is being recognized correctly as a DVD+/-R or +/-RW. If not , update the drives firmware and try it again (to see if it's a drive issue), update roxio to current version (6.xx) if it's out of date and check again.
