I bought a new computer, and now have SP2. When I use DvD Shrink 3.2.0.15, now, however, it refuses to recognize files on my local or my external drives. THe error message is: Failed to open file "D:\Movies\Robots\VIDEO_TS.IFO". The system cannot find the file specified. What is going on?

Do a uninstall and reinstall of shrink. See if that will correct the issue.

Does the system see the D drive outside of shrink?

Have the files already be ripped to your hard drive and are you then trying to open them with shrink (using open files tab)?

If so try processing the files thru IFOEdit first then open with shrink.
Here's a link to get it with guide..http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=3fb5bfa1d11b4a9f...

I have the purchased, up to date version of AnyDvd running. Not that that matters, since these are files that were ripped to my hard drive. I used Shrink months ago to burn the entire dvd (7.45GB) to my harddrive, (with my old computer), for absolute best quality viewing. But now I want to reset the preferences in Shrink to "4.78gb", and rip this folder to a disc, for portability. But Shrink won't recognize the files! (nor any of my many others)... EDIT: I tried resetting this size to 4300MB, as you suggested LOCOENG, not that that helps with this problem, but thanks for the advice, anyway....

Try setting your target size to 4300MB, 4.7 GB would be burning way too close to the edge of the DVD.

What's your process for having shrink open the files(describe it).
Is the movie "I Robot"?

I just used IFOEdit. I did what it said, including the "re-do" step. Now the error message is: (by the way, I am using a different movie now, which doesn't matter, since Shrink is not recognizing any of them) "Failed to open file "P:\Movies\Antz\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.VOB". "The system cannot find the file specified. I checked, and I indeed can't find a file in this directory named VIDEO_TS.VOB, however I checked and the movie plays fine, using my PowerDvd player, so apparently this file is not needed. Now what?

My process for opening Shrink is: I click "Open files", it goes to "Browse Folder", I navigate to the folder and either click on it, or click on the "VIDEO_TS" folder, it doesn't matter, the outcome is the same... By the way, the size of this folder is 7.35GB...
What I don't understand, is, in the past, this used to work: I would burn the entire (usually 7.35gb) movie to my harddrive, for viewing at home, and just go back later with Shrink, (if I wanted to burn the movie to disc, so that I could, like watch it on the plane, or over a friend's house), and just compress it from there (my harddrive). Why does this no longer work? -Frustrated in Texas....

I was having the same problem of DVDShrink not finding the files. I was trying to backup Dark Water. I was originally putting the movie on my HD with DVD Decrypter, then going to DVDShrink. Instead I ran VD43 in the background and made an .ISO file using DVDShrink. Then I burned it using DVD Decrypter.

Did you use DVDdecrypter to rip the file with, if so there may still be an encryption issue. I then would agree with Mik3h, get the 21 day free trial of anydvd, install it then open the files using shrink. You might have to re-rip the files on your hard drive to another location/folder first using decrypter if shrink gives you a problem while having anydvd runnung in the backround.

edit: get it here..http://www.slysoft.com/en/

No, I used Shrink. And I have owned AnyDvd (the paid-for version), even before I was using Shrink, and it (AnyDvd) is always running. It sits in the system tray, and starts up at Windows startup, I am looking at it now... By the way, I haven't even tried burning the movie yet. I am trying to compress it from a 7.35GB folder on my harddrive to a size that I can burn to a disc. Maybe a simpler (faster) solution to all this would be if you could recommend me another compression application, that can compress files. I understand DvdShrink is the best, so give me the name of the second best, and I will use it to compress my harddrive folder, and then burn it with my Nero 6 program. };-{0
BY the way, I just noticed, that, in my efforts to edit my post, I instead double-posted. sorry for that..

Used to be a shrink user, now I'm using DVD2One, It's soo much quicker! About half the time It took shrink, and the quality is the same if not better! I highly reccomend.

If you want an alternative to DVDshrink you might want to check out shrinkt05, it's not as feature rich as DVDshrink but it will compress your large files to fit on a DVD-5 disk (DVD+/-Rs). It's a free atlernative.

You can read about it here...http://www.shrinkto5.com
You can get it here....http://www.shrinkto5.com/software.asp

You can use it with anydvd running.

If you didn't use decrypter to initially rip the files, you could try and re-rip the files on your hard drive with decrypter having anydvd running, then try opening them with shrink...just a suggestion???

I tried ShrinkTo5, and guess what? The pop-up window error message was: "ShrinkTo5Gui.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". You know, the little window that invites you to "tell Microsoft about this problem" by sending an error report. Is this file haunted, or what?! By the way, I already tried a disk cleanup, and emptied my recycle bin, and that did not help either... I did not try DvdDecrypter, cause, frankly, I don't like it, and would rather find out why my favorite, DvdShrink, is not working anymore.. Also, I no longer have the original disk, it was borrowed.

Okay, I just tried something, and it seems to be working. I had already thought of re-authoring the movie, and leaving out the menus and stuff, and only burning the main title, cause sometimes this works when nothing else will, but you have to be able to access the movie first, and Shrink wouldn't let me do that. But I just now tried hitting "re-author" Before Even Pulling Up the Movie!, (Jeez I didn't know the program would let me do that), and then double-clicking on the TS_Video folder. When the familiar interface appeared, I drug the main title over, by itself, and hit backup. It is working so far, (the encoding is at 59% as I write this... I'll write back if it doesn't play or something, but as of now, I think this is a wrap-up. };-{0
