It looks like your burner doesn't recognize your new media. Check for new firmware and update it.

The Problem with that is now I find if I insert a cheap Phillips DVD-that i had laying around it begins the burn process. Is it possible that the firmware recognizes DVD- just not Taiyo Yuden?

What's your brand name and model # of your DVD-RW drive?
Also the current firmware for it.
What's the speed rate of those ty and philips dash media you are using?
Quote: can you burn dvd- with shrink?
Yep! Depending on burner model #.DVD Shrink does them both.
Some of the older drives are single format only. With the newer 8x and 16x media coming out, firmware update may be needed.
Then you have the possibility of fake tys. There all around us. Look at the dye side of the disc with a bright light. Look for a code on them like: The dash's will have a similar code like GD000272,just on the inner circle of the purple dye. There'll be a couple codes-one is in the inner hub/clear area, but look for the GDxxxxxx
Post back that code.

Firmware updates for a burner are very important, New media codes are instituted on new media types, and if a burner does not have updated firmware it will not recognize the new codes and therefore the disc.
It will ask for a disc that it recognizes.

That code sounds fishy. I pm'd Doc Ty for his opinion. Hopefully he'll join in.
Where'd you buy those tys at?

hi, just got the PM from my buddy saugmon, it SEEMS as if you got yourself some 8x DVD-R Taiyo Yudens, but VERY old stock...some of the first batch of 8x DVD-R made...
i can't safely say whether or not that you got a "bad batch" of TYs, but all of my 8x dvd-rs have been much more recent...regardless, i am not familiar with Samsung drives...
but i HAVE found your drive in the firmware database...
there doesn't seem to be very much as i only found 1 available firmware for it, here:
http://www.samsungodd.com/Lib/popup/Download.asp?path=FW_FWDownlo...
and you will need THIS new flash utility to make it work:
http://www.samsungodd.com/Lib/popup/Download.asp?path=FW_FWDownlo...
as i mentioned, i don't know if this is an issue with media or the lack of firmware updates to recognize said media...give the newest one a try...it's "1S31" (linked above) :)
also, im curious as to WHERE you purchased your TYs as well...possibly a SMALL company that has a lot of "old stock" to unload? it really doesn't make a difference, i'm just curious as to where you got them...
as to GENUINE Taiyo Yudens, saugmon gave you a coding for the TYG01s (which are the 4x rated dvd-r), the "GG000xxx" in ur case, are the TYG02s, 8x DVD-R rated Taiyo Yudens...where the "xxx" in my example is the batch number...the 123 for YOU is one of the earlier batches made, 1-2 years ago actually...how that affects your ability, or lack thereof, to burn onto them MIGHT be a drive related/firmware issue moreso than a media problem...

ok, well, i've purchased from rima.com in the past too, very reputable company....
guess it comes down to FIRMWARE now, have you tried flashing ur Samsung with the links i provided you?
don't think it's the media now since at least in MY experience with rima.com, they are very honest and reliable...TYs purchased from them have been very good~ i don't think it's a "bad batch" anymore...it's a drive issue/firmware issue :)

There's quite a few ways to check:
Go through device manager/cd-dvd rom-rw drives/right click samsung drive/properties/details.The firmware will be all way to the right.
Nero infotool:Go through nerotool kit/infotool/select samsung/click drive tab and you'll see your firmware version.
Dvdidentifier-it's free and helps ID your blank media:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...
Select your samsung drive/look on top for drive selection-drive write capabilities-you'll see it next to your model# on that top line.
Dvdinfopro-has a free version:
http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
Open up,select samsung drive-look to the right side of screen

Updated firmware and all seems well thanks to all for thier help. Am a little concerned why Rima.com sold such old media though, just purchased last week. But as long as it works I am ok with it
