Hello all. Spent some time reading through other posts and tried my hand with the search button but couldn't find anything that would fit this situation. Here goes. I have two machines, a laptop 1.8 ghz p4 with 512 ddr with a USB 2.0 burner toshiba 8x. and a desktop 1.6 p4 with 256 sdram (yeah, i know but I'm a cheapskate)sony 16x. Anyways, both of these systems would rip burn backups like pros, never had problems with either. then they both started having problems transcoding certain movies. now neither will successfully transcode a single movie, new or old. The laptop will just reboot with no error messages on startup or winows error messages. The desktop will just freeze. No BSOD on either, no error meesages, no serious erros. Nothing. At first I thought it was a dvd decrypter issue, but it goes through just fine, if I try going straight through dvd shrink alltogether it will still hang. Then i thought the issue might be with a bad video driver so i updated both. Nothing. Then I thought maybe a fresh install of windows (on the desktop) would do it. Nothing. I decided to try a different build of windows (instead of a winxp pro corporate). Nothing. I tried a different version of dvd shrink, 3.1.7. Nothing. After reading some posts i decided to check whether heat was a factor. The desktop system froze with a read out of 53 deg cel on the cpu. I have already preset the auto shutdown temp of the cpu at 60 deg cel. I've already taken off the cpu fan and cleaned it good. No dust in the case. Nothing. The laptop and p.c work fine with all other apps. They just freeze with shrink. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm racking my brains on this one.
Thank you

nuke.

All I can think of is to uninstall DVD Shrink and download a new DVD Shrink (3.2.0.15), then do a fresh install back on and try to see if you have any success. Other things to keep in mind is to:

<> run a scan disk cleanup and defrag your hard drive daily
<> free up or release more RAM by shuting down any unnecessary running program
<> disconnected from the net

Good luck!!

Yes. Here's what worked for me. I have two hard drives, one small 20 gig on one partition and a 120 gig with two partions, one small 5 gig for a winxp install, the second for everything else. What I kept doing was doing a fresh install on the 5 gig partition and it wouldn't work. This led me to think it was a framentation issue as mentioned in the previous post. So I finally installed winxp on the second, single partition 20 gig and it worked. My guess was that shrink stopped working altogther before because the drive was way too fragmented. Even defragging didn't help at this point. Several of my friends have had the same problems. I will share this info with them as well. HOWEVER, even after I got it to work, I let windows do the auto updates. BIG MISTAKE. After a certain update (have no clue which one) shrink stopped working. My solution now is to have two instances of windows, one a fully working with all the updates and the other simply for shrink. Both of these will be on seperate drives. Will format the drive on the laptop and see if it works and continue to post my findings here to see if this might help someone else.
