Download and install the latest version of Shrink. It's available here at AD. Then get the trial for AnyDVD from http://www.slysoft.com and use it for decryption. Do the short read on how AnyDVD works at the website. Then all you need do is transcode and burn. Use the Quality settings, new in version 3.2, for the recording, it helps with the compression.

He said the problem was solved. It was the old software. With AnyDVD and the newer version of Shrink, he shouldn't have a problem with using Shrink. So, he has the option of using freeware or retail for encoding. I suggest keeping the AnyDVD for decryption, especially since Shrink has no further support and no more updates.

Anything that will give a "clean" source and run through a good transcoder or encoder app will work. The problem is often with corrupted, out of date, or bad software. As noted, the problem was solved by using up to date versions and a clean install of the software. So, there are several combinations of different software that will work.

I've tried backing up the fog using dvdfab and then using shrink but I only get 32 min of main movie time and it's not even the main movie it's extras and they also come in distorted when I preview it. Then I tried AnyDVD with shrink but I had a similiar problem, same amount of time but no distortion. I'm new to AD so if anyone could help me I greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Same problem with Fog that fire46 had...Per Akohol instructions, Ripped using FabDecrypter [or DVD Decrypter in File F mode] to hard drive. Opened VobBlanker 2,0.1 to browse to and open Fog VIDEO_TS.IFO and hit 'process' into 'new fog' VIDEO_TS folder then used DVD Shrink to encode into iso file. All ya get is 32 minutes of the movie and 43 minutes of 'extra' garbage..
Anyone have any answers to burning this backup... Akohol.... anyone????

I ripped using DVDFab Decrypter, then burned with DVDShrink. It worked perfect for me.

Shrink is not a burner, did you mean you ran it through Shrink after ripping it to hard drive with Fab Decrypter and then auto-burned with DVDDecrypter ?

Derrick97 likely 'encoded' Fog into ISO image file after saving Fog to hard drive using DVDFab Decrypter. If he did 'burn' it he's in for a 'surprise' when watching it finding only the end of the movie....with 45 minutes or so of the DVD's 'extra' garbage....

Forgot to mention that I had AnyDVD running in the background. I also worded it a little off. After ripping to my hard drive with DVDFab Decrypter, I opened with DVDShrink which automatically uses Nero to burn for me.

Adnihilo: "Same problem with Fog that fire46 had" I was finally successful in backing up the fog but it was on my home pc. I used the same versions of dvdfab and shrink (latest versions) that I had on my laptop and for some reason it worked on the home pc, I was able to preview the entire movie with shrink and burn with 1click. I used the latest version of AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 for the laptop and that was also successful, I just finished watching the entire burned movie. Maybe some of the more advanced members could help us in finding out why the same software is working some and not for others.

yup... got 4800mb of VOBs with no video. Early v2.2 shrink will open the ripped files... showing all the extras & only the last few minutes [w/credits] of the main title. I need to re-rip the original 'FOG' disk w/the new AnyDVD installed.

With the available Shrink 3.2, there's no reason to use an older version. It does all they would do plus has more function added. VobBlanker with Decrypter and Shrink is the free method of doing DVDs. It doesn't work out to be the easiest and with editing, if not done just right, the results can come up short. AnyDVD is the best decrypter available at present, if for no other reason the decryption software is up to date and it's kept that way on a more reliable basis than by suppliers of the other decryption software. AnyDVD works well with the ripper type decrypters to rip files to the HD for use. Those apps (DVD Decrypter and DVDFab Decrypter for example) will not be doing decryption while doing the rip to the HD. You can watch a Decrypter log to see that. With a good clean source most transcoders and encoders (Shrink included) can produce a good output file for burnining. With a good output file, most burners are capable of a good burn. The key is in getting a good "clean" source to work with. VobBlanker was used to try to edit out a problem, AnyDVD is programmed to remove encryption problems for the user automatically. The difference in outcome here is due to how the user dealt with the encryption. Those with AnyDVD seemed to fair well and didn't need VobBlanker. Correct editing with VobBlanker works, but it is a more tedious process and as mentioned, leaves little room for error.

First thing I tried on "Fog" was shrink 3.2... wouldn't touch it; so I ripped up to my HD w/FAB express... same scenerio w/"Flightplan"... which subsequently processed just fine thru shrink 3.2. {Keep in mind; that at this point, AnyDVD was NOT installed}. The FOG fab-ripped files would not process, nor even OPEN w/the shrink 3.2 utility. At this point, I checked forums to see if anybody was having similar FOG problems... users reported success with using VOB-blanker utility w/FAB-ripped files... this did NOT work for me; as Blanker removed the main title VOBs which were [still?] corrupted at this point. Shrink 3.2 "encounters a problem" with the same ripped files, & will not analyze them... altho, the more primitive v2,2 shrink will analyze them, & even allow a preview. For this function, the EARLIER shrink version is useful.
The FAB-ripped FOG files are useless, as far as I can tell... unless I burned them ISO-format to a dual-layer disk, & let AnyDVD re-process them..?? I found no way that AnyDVD will decode files from the HD..??.... easier to do the original movie over.

BTW... I found it interesting that the fab-ripped FOG files [full disc] played on power-dvd... with all the menu functions, & extra features worked just fine... but when you selected "PLAY" the main movie... it started just before the credits, near the end.
From what I have been reading, on several forums... it appears likely that there were SEVERAL formats of encryption released w/FOG..?? I was working w/widescreen version... some people had no problems... even w/o use of AnyDVD.

yeh, maybe that's it... I used 2.9.5.0. If I have time, I'll do FOG over BOTH ways... since FAB is free... But AnyDVD will let me use DVD-decrypter... I like the overall status display better.

Shrink has not been updated for a long time. That means the decryption software is obsolete. It's no surprise that Shrink won't process newer movies that have encryption introduced after its last update. DVDFab Decrypter is a supported decryption utility that still receives updates. It's logical that DVDFab Decrypter should work with newer movies. It not working with a particular DVD movie (including Fog) would indicate that it isn't up to date or the DVD may have a physical flaw.
Quote: The FOG fab-ripped files would not process, nor even OPEN w/the shrink 3.2 utility.
Obviously the Fab files ended up with a structural flaw or didn't clear encryption that Shrink is unable to process. 2 problems that can halt the Shrink app as happened here.

As pointed out before, 3.2 is not going to process a flawed or encrypted source. Fab hadn't cleaned it up, or a bad disc. Even VobBlanker isn't going to correct flaws. As for Shrink 2.2, what good does it do to view if it won't transcode.
Quote: The FAB-ripped FOG files are useless, as far as I can tell... unless I burned them ISO-format to a dual-layer disk, & let AnyDVD re-process them..?? I found no way that AnyDVD will decode files from the HD..??.... easier to do the original movie over.
Read up on AnyDVD. The app is a decryption tool that runs in the background. It eliminates decryption, it doesn't correct or edit files for the user. So a bad file on the HD would remain bad. Copying the bad source to a DL would just be a waste of money as it would still be the same flawed file. It does make sense to use AnyDVD with the original source when trying to do a backup. However if the software isn't up to date or the disc is flawed, it still won't work. With the latest version of AnyDVD, I've not heard only a few complaints from users and it seems others are backing up the same movies. I suspect the user interface or a flawed disc, but there have been rare instances where multiple encryptions have been used. AnyDVD is usually updated for all of them though. If not and someone reports it, the update would be there shortly.
BTW... I found it interesting that the fab-ripped FOG files [full disc] played on power-dvd... with all the menu functions, & extra features worked just fine... but when you selected "PLAY" the main movie... it started just before the credits, near the end.
Not really noteworthy at all. Encryption doesn't affect playing DVD movies, it's there to prevent copying. As for the faulty play, did I hear earlier mention that files were edited with VobBlanker?
Quote: From what I have been reading, on several forums... it appears likely that there were SEVERAL formats of encryption released w/FOG..?? I was working w/widescreen version... some people had no problems... even w/o use of AnyDVD.
Multiple encryption systems are possible. Some DVDs have definitely been encrypted differently for different regions. I've not noticed the practice for inside a single region, but it could be possible. As mentioned before, AnyDVD has kept up with the various encryptions, so that wouldn't make a difference if the app is up to date.
AnyDVD isn't the only method for dealing with encrypted movies. It just happens to be one of the easier methods. So people having success without it is no surprise.

AnyDVD with DVD Decrypter is a good method. I've been using it for a long time with 100% success and that is with the newer encrypted movies. If you notice the log DVD Decrypter isn't doing the decrypting. DVD Decrypter is ripping the files to the hard drive and supplying a log while AnyDVD is handling the task of decryption. I like working with hard drive files and if a person runs into problems, they have the "cleaned" source files to check. Error in, error out as they say. Once a person has a good clean source for encoding, just about any of the decent transcoders and encoders can finish the task and any decent burner can put the files to disc.

>>Shrink 2.2, what good does it do to view
I save 'extras' from different movies... to later make composite "EXTRA" discs... this way I can use minimal [or no] compression, & use cheaper 1-layer media. For VIEWING folder content... the older shrink 2.2 is great... it analyzes these simple folders in half the time that the newer version does... & allows a quick prevue of content. Shrink also doesn't have the capability to JOIN titles from multiple sources... I use DVD2One for that... so, I use the older shrink for viewing only.
