Newb here, I was just wondering is there any loss in quality if I first rip a DVD to my HDD with Shrink and then use Rebuilder to encode it?
I like to use Shink to get rid of the menus and extras and unwanted audio, so Rebuilder only has to do the main movie. I set the target disc in Shrink as a DVD-9 so it wont compress anything, then rip it to the HDD.
My questions: Is there any loss in quality by ripping first with Shrink? Is there any difference between ripping with Shrink and DVDdecrypter?
Also, the HC encoder seems to be the best of the freewares (I dont want to pay for CCE), is that the general consensus around here too? thanks.

the use of dvddecrypter or dvdfab decrypter (both free)would be better as you are not getting a 1:1 copy if using shrink to rip!

rebuilder pro enables you to blank segments convert to stills! so you will be better allocating the bitrate to where it is needed!

do you use pro or free?

I use the free version of DVDRB. How will ripping with Shrink not give me a 1:1 copy on my HD? I'm not compressing it at all.

It seems that DVDReasy does the same thing as Shrink in terms of selecting only the main movie, only it uses HC instead of a transcoder, does anyone have experience with this program? It seems a lot like the pro version of DVDRB.

do you have a link so people can check it out??

I'm betting it does not have the advanced features that rebuilder does, and the support is unrivaled I've not seen a prog. that get's to the updates before you know you want them the way that rebuilder does! but I would like to eye it over!

dvdshrink processes your files even in situations w/ no compressing!
there has been numerous conversations on this but I have seen my own results and that is what I believe (my eye's) but feel free to try it out!

L8ter,

I agree with you 100%. I too have seen the results of using shrink as a ripper/editor with mine own eyes but have no way to prove it. DVD Shrink can in some cases alter (process) the files even set at no compression. We see eye to eye on this.

I only trust a true ripper that doesn't process the files such as dvdd or dvdfab decrypter and rely on dvdremake pro for all my editing. With all the advanced features in dvd rebuilder pro (only $25) a person almost doesn't need anything else accept a burn utility. I like remake because sometimes I like to save some of the extras to my backup and with it I can pick and choose.

there is image analysis software some of it freeware that will give you graphs & charts based on the loss of pixels and quantisation matrixes and other big words

but to tell the truth I've never given it a testing! I figured my eye's were not tryng to decieve me(as the years go by it may get harder to trust them, but right now I still do lol)

one day when time provides I may give this a go and give some screenshots!

This does not have the features that RB has.

I wish I still had one of those backups I made using shrink as the ripper/editor set at no compression. On certain scenes the background was dancing (for lack of a better word) around behind the foreground. I would post these so ppl could see for themselves. I ripped the same dvd's with dvd decrypter and edited them with dvdremake and the problem was gone.

All I will say is rip with whatever you want but if you use dvd shrink you will eventually see the problems it can cause defeating the purpose of using rb/cce.
