You read my mind. I was going to ask about the Verb's and Fuji's. Yeah I will never buy memorex again, and I would never have bought the imitations either.

Thanks for the codes to look up. I was going to get some verb's last night but they all said taiwan so I did not. now I know what to look for. thanks for saving me many coasters.

@Tendaf - Verbatim's from Taiwain are top quality, re-read that last reply of kivory666's, i think it was the Taiwanese Fuji's he said to be careful of..

yes...what creaky said~ :)

i know sometimes i tend to ramble and repeat myself over and over again, so i apologize for making it unclear.

FUJI= look for MADE IN JAPAN, as MIJ are Taiyo Yudens.

Verbatim= ALL current stock are MADE IN TAIWAN, they are VERY good media~ :)

hope that clarifies a bit~ :)

for you Plextor fans, a colleague found this -http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=138061 'from the the author of the project PxLinux, the (very modest) Linux port of Pxscan software (by Alexander Noe).'

I was aware of the lawsuit against the creator of Pxscan and Pxlinux by Plextor. They claim he ripped off their software, I think though that it has something more to do now that Plextor is offering professional editions of their Plextools at a price, they do not want to loose money. It always comes down to money :~)

I'm a tad pissed off as just run a pengo (I know cheap media) thru dvd identifier and came up with prodisc coding. I was hoping to use these as experimental discs but maybe I'll pass and get some sony dvdrw-.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

Here's a kprobe scan of a Verbatim 8x -R burnt at 2x on a Lite-on LDW-811S. The data on this disc consists of almost a quarter of a million PDF files of various sizes (244,656 files across 189 folders, occupying 3.95GB of disc). The disc has also been CRC scanned and shows zero errors.
The same exact data was written of the same drive to an Imation disc. This Imation disc generated a helluva lot of CRC errors on a different drive at work but is unreadable on either of my drives so cannot do a kprobe scan of the Imation disk.

UPDATE- Another Imation disc was burnt with the exact same data as above. This time my drives could read the disc. So a KProbe scan was done; the scan looked ok, but then i ran a CRC check. And unsurprisingly, loads of errors - 130 to be exact -

No comment, why waste words when CRC errors will do !

I dont question that yes sometimes a quality brand name does go a long way, or whether its a question of coke or pepsi, but in my experience disc do vary in quality from time to time and one brand could be great then bad and vice versa , getting to know your local retailer who uses the discs will tell you best on market at moment, reason being the ones that have less refunds / takebacks usually win

@frank

i will agree with you there, but, if it's CMC MAG coding manufacturer that sell under MANY retail brands, you are STILL at a loss~ the quality of CMC MAG is CONSISTENT in all their discs=crap. :)

every manufacturer/brand has a few bad batches now and then, even the coveted TYs have their share of a few bad ones, but, for the most part, it's good to have a TRUSTED brand that you use that has given you the BEST results in your backups in the past~

i for one like to know EXACTLY what i buy before i spend money on it, i don't like taking risks with my media by having to GUESS if the dreaded CMC MAG could BE their supplier~

good luck to those of you that are still deciding which to go with, TY and Verbs will ALWAYS be my recommendation for TRUSTED media~

As with anything you buy sometimes you will get a dud, but CMC Mag seems be a consistent dud. Over and over people who switch from it seem to get better burns, this in itself is a statement on the quality of the media. But there is something else that people have to remember and that is that they have to check and make sure their firmware is up to date, this plays a part in their burning. You can buy quality disks but if your burner does not recognize them you will have problems. Just my two cents :~)

My apologies for not being able to understand exactly what these pictures depict, other than dark dark is bad and not so dark is better. I think.

I need good DVD+RW media, and wanted to confirm that I'm reading these posts correctly and clarify the questions I have re: coding.

The 8x recommended are:

(1) Verbatim 8x DVD+R - made in Taiwan - MCC003

(2) Fuji 8x DVD+R - made in Japan - MC003 or YUDEN000T02

QUESTIONS:

(1) Where will these codes appear on the packaging? Are they part of the UPC? or written on each disc?

(2) Regarding the Fuji 8x, will I be looking for MC003 or YUDEN000TO2, or both?

Lastly, why are DVD's marked DVD+RW if they're not RE-writable? (TEON, Maxell, Memorex) They're just plain DVD+ media that gets burned once. I'm certain they can't be RE-writables because all the spindles in the stores are marked that way and certainly none of them were priced competitively with the actual DVD's marketed as RE-writable.

Thanks!

In order to know what the identifier codes of your media are you will need a program that gives you that, you can only see this when you insert the disk into the drive. Example of programs that give the info are Nero InfoTool, DVDDecrypter will do it, DVDIdentifier and DVD InfoPro. Disk packages will say made in Japan on them, that is a good way to tell if you are getting quality media. The scans are showing the amount of errors on a written disk, these disks will more than likely play in your standalones, but if you ever had reason to backup this copy you will have problems. DVD-RW are rewritable, just erase them, you have to finalize them if you want them to play in your standalone, but you have to erase the data before you can record again.

Ok, so I didn't know any better, saw Memorex (a supposidly name brand) on sale at Frys, and shelled out the cash for a 50 disk spindle, (that was quite inexpensive).

My question is, What is Fry's going to say to me when I take the 40 (out of 50) disks that my Lite-on burner refused to even see, back to them and demand my money back?

Also, as an aside, how are these manufacturers able to get away with this. I mean, that kind of failure rate has to be boarding on fraud.
(they advertise that they function, yet don't)

i guess it's partly that these brands are just everywhere you look. Everyone's probably heard of the name but just don't know how bad the DVDs are 'til they buy and start using them.

Arniebear mentioned it above, and most of us mention in most of the posts we write day to day - media is only a part of the solution, there are things like firmware for DVD burners, CD burners etc etc.

I have been suffering write errors for nearly 3 years now on various tape drives at work. The one consistent pattern has been write errors. Now these tapes are like £50 quid a pop and last for many years, all top quality such as Fuji etc. They are 100GB uncompressed and i manage to compress 300 to 500GB of data to these tapes for certain backups every night. (and yes we restore from these often so i know they work!). A process of elimination over time (firmware and software updates, bugfixes in the backup software used etc etc) has almost seen an end to the write errors, which is a shame as we're know designing replace methods for our backup infrastructure and we'll jump thru all the same troubleshooting hoops all over again!

@ Pastor

I have been a member of this forum for a short while and let me say creaky and kivory know their media as they are most active in these threads. Companies get into media as a way to expand in the ever growing consumer market. Alot of folks might know memorex for cd media but they in fact are new to blank dvds as far as quality. Buy for cheap sell and make a profit. If you want quality with backup movies I suggest as most would support is Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims. Also cmc mag coded media will deteriorate in about 6 months to a year (yes I used the dreaded cmc coded prodisc awhile back with xcopy platinum). I put it in to play recently and it skipped and jumped all over the place. To make a long story short good media, burn speed of about 4x (best for less chance of pixel and skipping problems on finished product) solve 95% of burning issues. I know I am a reformed crap media buyer :) also ordained ty3 knight:).

to burn or not to burn that is the question

Here is a scan of a Ritek G04 that was about nine or ten months since recording. This shows that all Ritek are not good. It actually played OK, however. I don't believe it was like this when it was recorded. This was recorded with a Pioneer A07 at probably 6X. For some reason I always got better Kprobe scans recording at 6X than I did at 4X. Actually, this may not have played, but I was able to copy it to another disc.
