Hi all,
I have been keeping an eye on this thread and noticed a few points we "highlighted' have kept the guilty away :). I for one will not point fingers but it burns me up that folks think a status indicates a higher degree of knowledge. I will be the first to admit during my early days here on AD my posts were ramblings (still do but more to the point). We might be onto something here as all have re-iterated our standpoints and that is a good indication of not only support for the site but maturity as well. Hopefully we can get some of the veteran AD-ers back by setting the example and the new folks to the site will follow suit.
Lets continue to do our part and help share information until the head-shed implements their plans for the transition to the karma system.

Quote: I will be the first to admit during my early days here on AD my posts were ramblings (still do but more to the point).
Thats very true. When I first came to AD there was so much mis-information in the Audio forum it made me want to help people so that they could enjoy technology like I enjoy technology.
Now I spend most of my time in the Home Theater based forum rooms. I see myself as a type of quality control. When a member (not neccissarily by rank) post something that I know is un-true I have to say something, the truth. I get flamed all the time by people un-able to cope with the fact that they are wrong even when I present them with facts and research. Those members would mostlikly vote me down even though I was right and they where wrong.
That being said, a karma system would make it easier to find relivant and good info like guides that actually work, helpful tips, and other things. I think a Karma system would be great for AD. It is up to the community to make it work right. I vote to place more faith in the AD communtiy not any perticular system.
Is an imperfect system run by perfect people better than a perfect system run by imperfect people?
I'm for a karma based system,
Ced

@matt72. You are correct that under the present system a higher statis DOES NOT ALWAYS indicate a higher degree of knowledge but does show a person can type really fast. That is why I liked the older system. The higher statis was given to those that deserved it through excellent posts that helped others as much as possible. Senior members were a rare sight and Addicts were seen even less. But both of those groups at that time were promoted because of their knowledge and how they used it. Those that made Addict back then really deserved it(I was not part of that group).

matt72, you talk a lot of sense, my friend.
At the end of the day though, regardless of status, we all have a duty here to help out and share the wizdom & knowledge. That's what's really important, not the title under our names.
Cheers all for some great discussion, it's good to be able to talk with people that have similar feelings toward the welfare of the forums.
Peace out.

If I still had my senior member name I would care, but now that I was banned and I had to start all over again, it really doesn't matter to me. Actually it would be probably better for me to take the karma system, I will get a higher rank faster.
Yours,
DG
P.S. My other name was dg0896

Quote: One of the points you arise is one of my pet peeves. "2nd That"... "I agree with Lethal"... "Do what Lethal says".. That sort of thing gets on my nerves more than anything else.
How does saying "2nd That" help in any way, shape, or form?
- It's blatant & very easy post pad.
I second that... he he he
If they stop counting safety valve post, there wouldn't be as many peeps with a "false status"...I would be fine with no titles,it is all about self satifaction in helping others...how can a person be proud of a title they did not earn
my 2 cents

I agree with you Jim, only if we do get the new system, you will earn your title, and the safety valve won't count.
cheers,

When you go to college you get credits for different classes you take? not for your lunch breaks!
The Safety Value is one Giant Lunch Room with everyone sitting around chewing the fat. Nothing wrong with that since that is one of it?s many purposes, but when it comes to aD Credits, I think it?s gone too far. Just look at what the aD college has been turning out lately? LOL
The safety valve post count issue has been going on even before I became a member in December of 2004. I had a couple of Senior members give me heck for posting 11 posts in the old signature thread when I used to make up animated gifs for other members. Wow, 11 posts back then gave me a bad rep even though I already had well over 100 posts at that time and went directly from Newbie status to Senior Member status, (over 500 posts in a very short time,) not with posts in the Safety Value but in threads helping others, especially on hardware issues.
What really counts is how admins and/or DRD feels about this. What?s the big deal with pulling the Safety Value Posts from ALL of us and let the numbers fall where they may. At least a member could feel comfortable posting in there if it didn?t add to his/her post count status. Let it be just a ?Break Room? from the hustle and bustle of the regular forums!

I like that one, pulsar. Then those who post for status will not bother, saving the rest of us correcting their usless posts attempting to do so.

Member in the UK is a derogatory euphemism, throbbing member would be even more derogatory.
All I can say is that you guys have minds like sewers, purely prurient!

You cannot have your status changed unless you have 100 posts than you will be a member. Then 500 fir senior Member. Then 2500 for Afterdawn Addict. For Mod you have to show determination.
Cheers,
DG
