JaguarGod, thanks, good points all. You're right about the end credits on this one, they are quite long. You're also right about the lack of special features (the only extras are a VW Toureg commercial [yes, a VW commercial] and a preview for some other movie shot in NY). Given this I think the menus are worthless, especially if your goal is to go with a single-layer backup. What I'd do (as I mentioned above I already backed mine up on a dual-layer) is hit reauthor and then trim the end credits in Shrink, and then save as uncompressed in a folder. No wasted space on credits or even a worthless still menu (not to mention that the VW commercial and the preview are both listed on the main menu, making it even sillier to keep). Then, I'd run that folder through DVD-RB. I suspect given the amount of compression required for such a long movie that results using RB would be much better than those using Shrink. But really, three hours and all that CGI, isn't this a dual-layer no-brainer?

just backed up Kong with Nero Express to a verb DVD +R DL at6X, flawless. Did not want the movie compressed. Of course AnyDVD helped and I didn't do it on the fly. Now if only the DLs would come down in price?

Mrchub,
You are probably correct, but I do not use DL discs as they are still around $6.00 each around here unless if I buy a 25 pack of MemoCrap for $70...
To the poster who mentioned splitting the disc in two, all you do is blank out half the disc in VobBlanker and save to something like c:\King Kong\Disc1\VIDEO_TS...
Next, blank out the other half and save to c:\King Kong\Disc2\VIDEO_TS...
This is the fastest/easiest method to split discss. You also retain a fully functioning menu on both discs.
For those DVD5 people, I will begin editing the DVD in a few seconds so I should be finished withing 10 to 15 minutes.

Used RB/CCE with 3 passes as a Full Backup... 186 minutes to encode, but, as usual, it looks excellent on my 52" widescreen HDTV!

@JaguarGod
DL discs can be had for $1.80-$2.00@ if you get the 10 pack of verbs when Best Buy puts them on sale. $18 -$20. I've seen the 25 memosux too @$70. That's $2.80@ and crapola to boot.

I guess I always miss out on those sales... However, $2.00 per DVD9 is still too much for me. I rarely do a backup that compresses lower than 90% and for things that do compress, I will take 3 DVDs and burn them into 4 DVD5s.
Basically, I do 3 movie only discs with menu and then I do a compilation special features disc. When DVDR DL get to $1 per disc for Verbs made in Singapore, then I will start picking them up. THe benefit will be getting 1:1 backups and for smaller movies, putting 2 or 3 on one disc!!!
BTW, I am finished editing King Kong, but the smallest I can get the menu is to 7.17MB. I will do a bit more editing and try to get it to about 3MB... If this proves to take too much time, I will quit and just upload what I have now

Edit: This can only be used for King Kong Single Disc, Widescreen edition. I have no way of testing it with anything else.
OK, I am finished!!!
I am also including this post as a readme file:
First, ripping instructions:
Insert your disc into the drive and launch DVD Decrypter. Go into IFO Mode: "Mode=>IFO"
The main movie is automatically selected. Scroll down to the final chapters. UNCHECK CHAPTERS 50 & 51!!! Now, rip the movie. When you are finished, DELETE VTS_01_0.IFO!!! Do not rip anything else!!!
Download this zip file [2.51MB]:
http://rapidshare.de/files/16688470/King_Kong.zip.html
Extract the contents into VIDEO_TS folder of the movie (the files that are within the "files" folder only.
Test playback using a software media player like "Media Player Classic"
Launch DVD shrink and compress...
Here is what I did:
-Removed all FBI Warnings, Parental warnings, etc....
-Optimized DVD playback for maximum DVDR to DVD compatibility
-Optimized DVD for faster loading
-Removed 16 menus from VMGM
-Created new VMG for increased compatibility with DVD Shrink
-Removed 3 menus from VTSM1
-Removed VTS_02 & VTS_03
-Removed Duplicate menus in VTSM1 (menu size now 2.65MB)
-Corrected commands in VTSM1 for modified menus
-Removed buttons that pointed to deleted materials
-unhid "hidden" extra features button (changed it to the VW button)
-Removed extra buttons from Main Menu and Chapter Menu
-Removed Chapters 50 & 51 from the main movie
-Removed referenced to chapters 50 & 51
-possibly some other changes, but can't remember off-hand...
The DVD now compresses to 55.4% with all menus in tact!!
Just a note, I said that I would make a guide, but that is now a definate NO!! The reason being that it would take me way to long to write it up and I do not feel like re-editing the DVD (I had to do it 4 times already). Also, the guide would be at least 70 pages long...
Enjoy!!!!!
Edit: By the way, you can only use this for King Kong Single Disc version: Widescreen edition!!!

Damn, JaguarGod, that's a lot of work! I'm not sure the time spent is worth the reward of keeping the menu, but whatever you like. Did you remove the text of the dead buttons using DVD Remake / Muxman? That's what I generally do if I kill extra features and remove buttons pointing to them.
Anyway, the question is (and I assume you have a decent TV), what does the end result look like?

The main reward is helping others. The other benefits are a bonus!!!
I have not actually backed it up yet, only prepared it. I will do it over night, so at best, I can check tomorrow some time. The original did look very nice though, so I am sure the difference will be noticable!!!
Also, I used only PGCEdit and IFOEdit to edit everything. The menus were shrunk with MenuShrink. I also processed the movie with FixVTS. I did not remove the text from the dead buttons (probably the only thing I do not do to DVDs).
The time that went into it was about 10 minutes like I said before to get to the point where the menu was 7.17MB, but I kept on screwing up stuff, so I had to do it over and over again...
To remove the extra chapter menus was also quick!!! I used IFOEdit in MenuExtras mode. I stripped the VobIDs of the menus following the pattern I observed (these were the ones kept):
vobids: 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, ... , 49 (I also kept VobIDs 1, 2, & 3 which are to the other menus in the VTSM)
This took about 2 seconds.
I then deleted the extra buttons in PGCEdit for these menus and finally corrected the DVD Commands:
Remapped commands to cells(programs) in triplets (I am using the incorrect word) i.e.:
commands pointing to programs 1, 2, & 3 now point only to program 1
commands pointing to programs 4, 5, & 6 now point only to program 2
.
.
.
commands pointing to programs 49 & 50 now point only to program 17
This took about 3-5 minutes (a lot of double clicking)
Most of the time was spent checking for errors (testing playback & making backups) and I also process the movie with FixVTS to remove the references to the removed Cells (in the main movie) from the IFOs. I have not figured this one out in IFOEdit yet...
Overall, without testing or making stupid mistakes (I kept on deleting the wrong files), the process took about 13 minutes, maybe even less.
I also made changes to the zip file after uploading so I uploaded it 5 times.
Also, the extra time it takes pays off because I did not have to process the DVD with VobBlanker (saved about 7 minutes). Also, I did not rip about 280MB of the movie so that was about another 1 minute saved. Also, like I said, normally I do this much faster, just this time I made more changes than normal and I worked a bit slower to reduce the chance of error...

Interesting, since there are many paths to the same destination. Mine takes about the same amount of time:
Had I not backed it up on a DL disc I would have ripped with AnyDVD/Decrypter, removed extras, warnings, and the credits with VobBlanker (as well as creating stills for the menu), then removed the VW and NY preview buttons with MenuEdit. That would have left me with a disc which spins up to the main menu as a still with the VW commercial and NYC preview deactivated as buttons (but, I suppose, the chapter and language menus still usable). Then, I'd extract the menu as a bmp using DVD Remake, use Paint Shop Pro to get rid of the text of the removed buttons, then run the whole damn thing through DVD-RB with CCE. The end result would be a still menu with Play, Chapters, and Languages available, and the full 3-hr movie. But I still can't imagine that there wouldn't be noticeable artifacts compressing this particular film so much. Maybe I'll do it just to see.

@jaguargod and mrchub
Excellent advice from both. However, I had a lot to do today, so, I just did a Full Backup with RB/CCE at 3 passes as mentioned before. The result is excellent with no visible artifacts scanning through each chapter on a 52" widescreen HDTV. But you guys are absolutely right: The extras are DEFINITELY pure "crappola!" And the length of the credits... why? How many "shout-outs" did they really need to give? I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to keep them. I was just being lazy today.
EDIT: I still have the ripped file, so, I still may trim it down and reencode it again later... I've never really bothered transcoding a movie with this amount of compression as I just usually use RB/CCE from the start, but this time I may run it thorough CloneDVD2 and Recode2 as well and do my own little testing for a change. There are so many here contributing that there usually is a consensus on what works best anyway...

Man, so many people are compressing this movie with good results. Question for teflonmyk and arniebear: Do you guys have upscaling dvd players? I'm really baffled that a movie this long wouldn't look very "soft" with that much compression.

I backed up the WHOLE DVD at 51% using ANYDVD & CloneDvd 2 I watched it this morning the whole movie on my Philips DVD 642/17 and it was flawless... on a 27 inch TV I then looked at different scenes on a APEX DVD Player (older model) on a 27 inch TV Same results. So I doubt it will make a difference what DVD player it is played on...
Wide Screen Ver of the Movie also (I don't know if that will make a difference % or quality wise)

No, not any upscale players. I have a newer Sony, older Toshiba and Apex and a couple of Cyberhomes. The movie looks good on my 27, 32, 32 inch TV's and even on the portable DVD player. I did it using RB/CCE and it came out fantastic took 117 minutes to back up. Then tried out Nero Recode on advanced analysis (two pass) and slow encode, which is really transcode, and it took 69 minutes but the quality was not as good as RB backup, but still very nice.

Hey all, seems that some people are having problems with this DVD, and sad to say I'm one of them. I just bought my movie yesterday and made a copy using DVDFab Decrypter then Shrink. I used a Verbatim 8x DVD+R Lightscribe Disc (MCC 003) burning it at 8x. Used Nero Disc Quality Check and received a score of 96. I thought all was well until I played the movie on my standalone and about 20 mins. into the film it started freezing and then skipped back to the beginning of the chapter. I've tried fast forwarding through the scene where the error took place but it won't let me go past it. I've configured Shrink's target size on the disk at 4360MB. Don't know what other kind of information I can provide you guys with so I get the best input. Backed up around 50 movies using the same media and the same method with no problems. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello all, this is my first post on this forum and I am a new DVD burner! I have read through this thread on the King Kong Movie, and I had made a copy last night with DVD Decrypt and Shrink but I was not happy with the outcome. We watched it on our 47 inch sony tv and it was very fuzzy in spots. Can someone tell me what to do with the Decrypt and Shrink to clear up this problem. Again, I am very new to all this, so I just used the settings that were in place on the Decrypt and Shrink. How do I adjust the compression that everyone is mentioning? -I read all through the threads and I couldn't find any mention of how I change the compression?
Thanks in advance to any patient responders!

Caper101 ,also doing the movie only and cutting out all the extras will get you better results . use good blank media too (Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim) are tops.
and CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD ,is the best program going ,heres a guide that may help
