Got an advance copy (Video store buddy). Nothing special on it at all for protection wise. Used Shrinks alone and came out perfect. No glidges at all. Full movie and features.

Learning more but still leaning on a Newbie status! :)

Was this the two-disc edition? If not, and it was the single disc version, it must've been loaded. It's a 3 hour movie and to have extras on it would be crazy. Unless there is no single disc edition. I thought they were making two versions? Anyone know?

I bought this also, encrypted "Yes" but nothing major backed up an additional 2 copies using AnyDVD & Recode2 (NERO). I backed up one as "Movie Only" and the other I kept the menu and extras but I used AnyDVD's option to open disc from main movie. I purchased a"Full Screen" copy which plays better "Movie Only" (Less compression and better picture quality. The CGI graffics in this movie are unmatched in my opinion. Great movie with strong metaphoric undertones, sad tear jerking ending.

I also back this one up and don't recall the commpression however you will definitly want to spread this one over two disc. The movie alone is quite big.I think it was 50-60% some where in there.

The Compression will probably be around 41. I just backed up Lord of the Rings as a test 200 minutes long and the compression was 41 and Kong is 187 minutes.

50-60 isn't bad. Looks like I'll have to use DVD-RB to do this one--especially if it's the single disc edition.

I've noticed that there isn't always a relationship between how long a movie is and if it will or won't need to be commpressed.
My theoy is that movies very in recording speed (quality?) I have seen many movies way under 2 hours long that need to be commpressed and I'seen some over 2 hours that don't. I'm not quite clear on exactly whats going on here .All I can say for certain is that length and commpression don't seem to jive.
Dose anyone have a better understanding of this?

@ Rick,

I totally agree. I'm willing to wager if a movie is recorded with the greatest possible quality video, regardless of how long a movie is, the compression rate for us will still be terrible.

Then again, I could be completely wrong. But it does make sense.

When you wanna record a 2 hour show on a VCR or DVD, it'll look great. But if you wanna record a 6 hour show on either format, the quality will dip etc. So if the highest quality is used on the two hour show, if we were to copy it, the compression will be high.

Rick6, it all depends on the bitrate used in creating the dvd transfer, and that's up to the author. Lower bitrate = crappier picture. I have some 90-minute movies that needed compression because of the higher bitrate used in creating the dvd in the first place.

In my humble opinion, I'd use the DL too. 1- I always retain everything on the disc (except for the FBI warnings, unwanted trailers and foreign language tracks/subtitles). 2- Since this movie relies heavily on CGI, I'd want it as crisp as possible. Add those together, and you have a DL backup :) Nevermind that it is over 3 hours lol.

Your compression relates alot to the size of screen your watching it on. 55% com may not look bad on a 13" tv ,but as your tv screen gets larger you start to notice the picture quality getting worse and worst. If you don't presently have a big screen TV and your happy with what your seeing at 55% compression thats good. But if you think that some day you may have a 50"" or more screen you may find the picture quality very poor and wish you had made better back-up copy.
