The component will also output at 1080p. The big problem is that there are very few hdtv's which will accept 1080p through component. That's why the vga is suggested for max resolution. Just about all the hdtv's have a vga input.

You'd have to look at the mfg's specs for your hdtv to find out what the highest resolution is which it'll accept through component.

What is the exact model of your Sony?

Thank you, so I should see a huge difference in Video when switching from Standard TV to either 1080i or 1080p

Why does everyone seem to get so stressed about 720p and 1080p?? At the end of the day, the difference between the two is not GIGANTIC like many people seem to pretend it is. Also unless you have a 50+inch screen and are sitting less than 7-8 feet away, your not going to notice anyway. And whos going to be sitting that close to that size TV for a long time without thier eyes melting.

What really counts is buying a decent TV which shows the quality image. I've seen 50inch 720p plasmas which i would outright have over some other 50inch 1080p plasmas. So dont assume resolution is EVERYTHING.

I recommend setting your TV's correctly though with a THX dvd or other, as correctly configuring your tv's settings will make a huge difference. Then stop worrying, and start enjoying! You didnt buy the console to worry about technical specs, you bought it to complete GOW on insane mode!

Check this video out. Although it doesnt go through 1080i vs 1080p exactly, it explains interlaced and progessive images.

EDIT:
Ahh just read it properly. Jumping from SD to HD is huge. You will definatly see a big difference in video images. But it does really depend on your eyes as to how major the transformation will be. Go to your local AV retailer and have a good look, also ask for a demo if possible.

I've heard there's a dvd to calibrate your hdtv. Got any more info on this?

Lots of them about. Going from Avia to THX. Avia being much more comprehensive but costs money (around $30 i think). THX Optimizer should be an extra function on some of your DVD's. Put some in and look around in options/settings and see if you can spot it on any of them. Using this will definatly improve your picture but i THINK they are specific to the DVD so they make you adjust your screen for that particular film. But the differences arent too much and usually setting for one will give a decent image through the others (definatly much better then pre-calibration!)

I cant comment on the Avia discs as i've never used one/bought one so i couldnt say if its worth the money. But looking at this tutorial, it looks ok but not sure if its value for money after calibrating:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/Video-calibration.html

Hope thats of some help. Im not really an AV man, only getting into the whole scene quite recently and have much more to learn. But definatly check out http://www.avsforum.com/ for more info on all of your AV equipment.

=)

I tried using the VGA cables instead of the component cables that came with the 360, and although it seemed to produce a slightly better image, the colors were so much more dull and bland.

Is it supposed to be thus?

When did you try this? It use to be that way but MS released a fix with the spring update. The color washout has been fixed and there's also 3 options to change the color settings.

Well, I've got the spring update, so no problems there.

I'll try and change the color settings again.

I tried it and it looks pretty nifty. Not sure how much of an improvement I can notice over what it was with the normal cables, but I'll have to have a comparison look.

Through the HD cables that come with the 360, I had it set to 1080i.
With the VGA cables I can set it to 1280 by 1024.

So, which one should be giving me a better picture?

By the way, with sound, do you have to have external speakers? I've got a crappy little sound system, and so I wanted to plug the sound cables of the VGA cables into the back of my TV (because they produce better sound than my crummy speakers) but no plugs seem to work. It only works if I plug the sound cables into my speakers.

That's what I have mine set to. When I switched I noticed the lines smoothed out alot in CoD3 and especially in Forza 2.

Did you go into your hdtv's settings and enable audio input? I don't use the red/white audio connections on my vga cable. I use the optical and run it through my receiver. And honestly, I noticed a big difference when I switched to that.

Yeah, I've noticed smoother lines just about everywhere; there's certainly a difference, but something about the color quality doesn't look as good. I can't get it as bright as it was before and the whole screen seems to have a slightly blurred effect.

And yeah, I tried changing the audio output settings in the 360. Maybe my TV just can't support it.

In the system tab, in video, did you see you can change the referance level from standard, intermediate, or expanded? This is new for vga users. It was released in the spring update.

Yeah, i saw those settings, but they don't seem to make a difference for me: I can't get the same color quality or the lack of slight blurriness that I get with the standard cables.
