ok everybody...im getting the lights flashing and that started with everytime i played madden 09...before i got madden 09 it didnt do it. i had to update my xbox to play it
i called the support team and i could have given myself better help then her.
she said "on my database i have no symptoms of a flashing yellow light with out the trey ejecting."
then she went on to try to get me to buy a new xbox for $90
i hung up on her
if i dont get a solution to it im tempted to throw it away hahaha

This happened to me once last week, and again tonight. I do not have a modded 360, and it was manufactured in July 2006. I always keep it in a well ventilated area, lying on it's side.
I was playing Bad Company online (middle of a match, so no data was being streamed off the disc... that happens in between levels) and my Xbox restarts out of the blue then makes this grinding/scraping sound. I try to eject, but the drive will not respond. Unplug power, then manual eject, and the disc has rings freshly scratched into it. Push drive closed, reconnect power and turn on: power light begins flashing and shows no signs of stopping. No onscreen error, and drive button in the dashboard says "Close Tray" even though the tray has been pushed shut. Pressing it changes it to "Closing" and nothing changes. Power off and then pressed the eject button, with no response. I then go to Google to find a thread chronicling similar issues; I stumble across this thread. After reading a few posts, my 360 mysteriously powers on and the light stops flashing after a few seconds. Drive button in dashboard says "Open Tray", and pressing it makes the drive respond. I say "weird" then proceed to type this post.
I haven't messed with it more out of fear my discs will be destroyed, but I suspect it will work until it happens again. The first time (I was playing GTA4, game hardly got scratched by laser unlike Bad Company), it just restarted and the eject button wouldn't work. All I had to do to fix it was unplug then replug the power to the back of the xbox. This time it was significantly more work.
I will call MS tech support tomorrow during business hours.
@dtnbafan: That is probably because the flashing light is green, not yellow.

Hey guys. I've done several repairs over the last few years on cheap 360s. But i've come across a new prob with the center flashing green light. On this 360, it appears to be the begginning of a heat prob. I have the dvd drive disconnected completely and mobo sitting in bottom piece of metal chassi. When i turn the 360 on, it boots to dash and appears fine(cept the flashing light). But after a min or so, hte fan begins to speed up rapidly. I havent bothered to try a game in it yet because the light still blinks with the dvd drive removed. I;ll try the x-clamp fix and pressure pads on the other chips in the area and see if it works. Its also a halo 3 edition

Lol, i checked with a buddy and e said not to bother with any hardware mods because the eeprom is corrupt or has stopped working. The fan going crazy is possibly a side effect from this problem.

Your buddy may be wrong, If the light is flashing when the dvd drive is out it's because the 360 isn't detecting a dvd drive. That's what it does, it flashes green when the dvd drive is dead/unplugged.
The fan speeds up because the xbox is getting hot, probably not hot enough to overheat if it is just sitting at the dashboard, but its normal for the fan to turn on.

I'm KINDA having the same problem, just a bit different. a few days ago, i went out and bought call of duty, world at war. So excited to play, i came home and put it in my console, only to get unplayable disc. Now...here is the strange part. My rom would read COD:4, the OLDER version with scratches, yet not COD: waw..the new one with no scratches.. strange. so i figured i needed a new drive. Purchased a hitachi just like mine off of ebay, and swapped the logic boards so there was no need for flashing. Excited as sin, i turned on my xbox only to get the constant green flashing and no eject function. Wont even TRY to read discs. I know it isnt the drives mechanisms, cause its brand new. It shouldnt be my logic board, cause it worked in the prior drive, and i have been very careful as to how i did all this. I KNOWWWW i didnt make any mistakes.........can ANYONE help????

Hey guys, been a while. I"ve done some reseach and gained a lil more exp with these types of probs.
If the player is scratching discs, your spindle isn't balanced. (factory defect, neglect, w/e) You can tinker around with it to see if you can fix it. Haven't done that repair myself yet.
The prob with the dvd drive suddenly screwing up could be caused by a few things. The chip which holds the firmware could be damaged in lots of ways when it comes to static or if you have shitty surgy power coming from your sockets, it could just be a dud and has screwed up, or maybe an update from live?(its screwed shit up before)Make sure you triple check all your connections, sometimes those small ribbons can be a pain and dont always fully connect even if it feels like they have. One other thing, make sure if your gonna buy replacement parts, the person your buying from has a good rep. My cousin had all types of problems finding a good kreon and replacement parts.(All the people he dealt with had great ratings on ebay. Too bad there crap didn't work :) BE SURE

One quick note: Dont Do Repairs In Carpeted Areas
Even a shock you dont feel can screw your hardware.

My xbox 360 greening light flashing problem happened the same way as one of your guys: playing call of duty: waw. I first thought it is because the drive is too dusty inside, So I used vacuum to suck some dust out with the dvd drive, It worked twice, then it won't work. I noticed the the manual eject button is kind of loose from the dvd drive's own eject button when i removed the faceplate from the box. It seems that when you push the manual eject button, it will "drag" instead of "push" the dvd drive's own eject button to open the tray, since it is loose, that is why sometimes you can even eject the disk by pushing the manual eject button. Is there any one can confirm the mechanism of how the tray opens? I wonder if we glue the manual eject button and dvd drive's own eject button will solve the problem.
I am still waiting for the MS reply, I think I pretty much I'll end up with buying a new drive, A piece of crap

ok guys im having the same problem i think i have found the solution... what i did at first like any modder would do is opened my 360, it works 90% fully open and only occasionaly pulls the restarting crap, so when it did restart with the case open, i pushed on the black cable on the back of the dvd drive it felt a bit loose so i gave it a nice firm push and it restarted and worked fine....THIS seems to be temporary because when i close the system back up the problem persisted, but is seems to fix it about 99.99% of the time when the console is open; to push on that black cable(not the one with multiple wires but the one wire solid black one)
Any thoughts?

lift the dvd drive up, and make sure that your SATA cable is plugged into the motherboard good. The SATA cable is the single black wire. Also make sure that when you close the case its not pulling on it anywhere.

Been reading this thread for a few weeks now. My 360 has the same problem. I've changed the dvd drive(put mobo in the new drive). Next thing im gonna try is to change the power and sata cables. Then i am gonna change the drive ribbon on the drive itself, maybe i ve kinked it when putting it in the new drive. If all else fails new 360 me thinks there cheap enough now £130 for arcade edition with hdmi port on it.

SUCCESS :) When i changed my drive i took the mobo out of the old one and put it in the new drive. Thats why my problem must have continued. I put the new mobo back in and flashed the old key onto it and voila, no flashing light and works like a dream. So imo the flashing light must be dead mobo in the dvd drive. Hope this helps people out.

it could have been a different rom version than your original. you should have just flashed your new drive with your orginal dvd key.

My box has the same issue with the random restarting of the machine, followed by the blinking green light, no errors, and no disc read. Could someone summarize all of the possible issues to check for. (ranked from most likely to least, maybe?)

Now, I don't know that this will work for everyone, but there is a small rubber band that controls the gears, mine came loose. I reattached it, and BAM! Working. This isn't a universal fix, but completely something you should try before shelling out 50$ for repairs.
Cheers
Alden

Well you seem to have it happen to you when you turn it on. I am having the blinking middle light on after I power my console down after I play a while. I have the Nyko cooling fan attached to the back. Anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong?
