Don't take offense as that was not the intention nor is it my call as I am no mod. This is the thread that you started that I was speaking of.

I certainly do not think Ferguj1 was attempting to discourage you from posting, or from having questions. I did not gather that from his post at all. If you have questions, please post them. There are some very intelligent people here trying to help. Just my two cents.

Could rephrase ? I don't quite understand your question
Okay, if I take some video files and want to make a regular normal DVD, like the prerecorded ones you buy, and I used a program that automatically does that, would the program be finalizing (closing) the DVD, at the end of the process? (I'm thinking about the fact that to get a copy of a music CD to play in a stand alone CD player, it has to be finalized (closed).
when I look at the contents of a 'real' DVD, what I see is 2 folders. If I save them to my hard drive somehow, and then simply burn them onto a blank DVD as data files, they work in my DVD player, but do I now have an exact duplicate DVD? I don't finalize (close) them, and maybe it's important to do that. I don't know. All the guides I've read get to the burning stage and simply say to use Nero, or whatever, and that's all they say. But I don't have any of those programs. I simply use the rudimentary DVD software that came with my computer, and burn them as if they were simply data I am archiving. I have a thread elsewhere, regarding file types to use for a stand alone DVD player, and someone kept using the phrase "real DVD", so I started wondering if I was not doing it right. No one ever really answered me about that.
bluesbabe, sorry for my tardiness in answering your question, but the best way for you is to use dvd shrink in conjunction with Imgburn. You will however need a special version of shrink to autoburn with Imgburn (both free) and can be found here
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/664041
Imgburn can be found here
www.imgburn.com
As stated previously, both are free.
Imgburn will auto close (finalize) a dvd and make it playable on a stand alone dvd player. You will need to select the option when you get to that part (burning) in shrink , of using Imgburn as the burning engine.
Hope this helps
And this will become "a real dvd (burned ofcourse)'
BTW, when you burned the 2 files, one was Audio TS(empty) and Video TS (where all the data was kept)
Not the best way to do it. Just use the above advice and things will go smoothly
The BPI Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The RIAA Soundexchange Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The IFPI Are: The same anti consumer lot as listed above!
The MPAA Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX.

Thanks, 1bonehead. The "closing" issue has driven me crazy. Some, though not all, said it wouldn't play unless it's closed. I wasn't closing them, but they still play fine on my low end stand alone player, so I didn't know other players may be different. Is that why they should be closed, to make them universally playable?
I'm making the transition to DVDFab, which I downloaded as previously suggested. It has solved my problem of getting the error in DVDShrink when trying to backup a newer Sony DVD. I'll get IMGBurn, and give it all a try.

Yes
The best way to backup a commercial is rtm's method
1) back up dvd to HDD with lateat dvdfab HD (free)
2) process with fixvts
3) transcode with dvd shrink
4) burn with Imgburn
5) enjoy
Hope this helps. Any further questions, please do call back.
Also let us know how you did (post back)

Just checked the FREE STUFF page. No longer listed as DVDFab HD Decrypter , and version is at 5090. Noted as "trial" on another page. Is there still a free version ?

When you download and run that version, you will have the option for the free version.

Beg pardon. It's listed same as previous free versions, but I found the exact file name, version, and size (mb) on another page at the site, stating that it's a trial download.?
