buy a mod chip=LEGAL
flash it with cromwell linux=LEGAL (its not hacked)
put linux debian on it=LEGAL
download or buy a linux app that allows you to play wmv files=LEGAL

well what lcarbutt said is correct basically modding is all legal until you get to the part and flash with hacked bios although installing linux is not illigal.

no i said flashing you chip with hacked bios is illegal, but flashing linux on it is not.
flashing is the process of putting bios on your chip that tell it what to do. (play back-ups whatever etc...)

you can buy pre flashed modchips. They come with cromwell linux. This is how they are sold legally. You can then follow previous instructions for purchasing software for a linux system to play your movies.

if you do the mechassault exploit, you can only put eds debian on at the moment, and you need to use a boot disk to open up linux everytime you want to use it, and you cant open up the disk tray to put your wmv files on it, so i suggest you buy a modchip you smacktard

Wow, someone on a forum SCARED to mod an X-box? Because it's ILLEGAL? whatever. How old are u by the way? I'm really not trying to make fun of you (if we were in person I for sure would) but worrying about the legalities of modding an XBOX? Yeah, I'd really like mod my car to make it faster, but then I'd be going over the speed limit....oh well. There's no point in continuing this thread, because we all know it'll end up an ugly political debate on right vs. wrong. WE THE PEOPLE make the laws and it is impossible for everyone to agree on all laws.(or any for that matter) Who are you to say that it is wrong to break any certain law? Is it not law breaking that founded us America?

Joles...no offense, but America kicks ass.
That being said...there are some stupid laws out there. Have you ever read those books that have crazy laws in them. Like for instance: in one state it may be illegal to wash your dog after 5pm. lol, who knows how or why that became a law. The point is, Cakefoo...nobody has gotten in trouble for modding an xbox. The only thing you are going to be able to do that is not illegal includes: a modchip with linux, painting your xbox, adding various LEDs, and upgrading hardware inside you xbox, such as a new dvd drive.
And whoever said that the xbox will read a cdr is nuts. Maybe it can, but you will have to search forever to find a brand it will like, not to mention that you need to have a certain dvd drive in your xbox.
I do believe that this thread has ran it's course. You have all of the possible answers to your question, even if you are not satisfied with them.

hey shdwsfall,
my xbox can read cdr's. i have a samsung drive in my xbox and all cdr's read perfectly on mineyou just have to burn it eaither in windows media player or Nero at 8x or slower. cdr's usually work in samsung drives and not on most of other drives like philips or thompson
