I have been using Shrink for some time now and it has been working fine. Recently it has become very slow. It takes over 1 minute to open and moving between menues is jittery. It seems to analyse ok but when I try to backup the problem starts. A normal movie can take upward of 40 hours to complete (Obviously I stop it). If I re-author it is no better.
The only new programmes I have installed recently are Adaware Pro with Adwatch running in real time and Diskeeper 10 Pro set to Smart Scheduling. I have tried disabling these whilst running Shrink with no improvement. All other applications appear to open and close normally.
I have a pro anti virus and regularily scan. Defrag is run and the PC health is ok. I also ran Spybot yesterday and nothing was found. I have 2 DVD drives with a Pioneer and NEC fitted. DMA is enabled and ok.(I have also tried a different drive with no change so don't think it is hardware).
I have reinstalled Shrink numerous times and even downloaded fresh copies. There are no unusual settings to slow it down.
I am running XP with an Athlon 1000 and 768 Ram. 40G HD with only 9G used. Nero 6 is used for burning and I have the latest version.
Any ideas?

Seems like a clash of programs, I'd give AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 a try.
All PCs' have their foibles, mine crashes' every time I try too burn a CD with Nero?? DVDs' are OK.
good luck

Try to uninstall adware pro diskeeper 10 pro set to smart scheduling instead of disabling them. I think the memory of your pc is used up.
that is why it is so slow.....
After doing that try to use shrink again and I think I will speed up the copying process.

Hi and thanks for your advice. I will try these and see if it improves. Before I remove the programmes though is there any way of checking if the memory is being stretched? Reinstalling Shrink has made no difference.
Thanks

You could always check your task manager to see the current performance and useages of the computer.
I had the same problem with DVD Shrink and it turned out my DMA had defaulted to PIO which is very SLOW. I had to unistall the driver then XP will automatically update the driver when you reboot.

Thanks. Can you tell me how to check if that has happened and what driver you are referring to.
Thanks

This may or may not solve the problem. If you do not have a version of XP as your operating system then please DO NOT do the following.
1. click on the start button on the lower left of your screen.
2. Click on Control Panel
3. Click on System
4. click on the Hardware Tab
5. Click on Device Manager
6. click on the IDE/ATE ATAPI contollers
7. You'll see 1 or 2 primary IDE channels depending on if you have 1 or 2 DVD/CD Roms.
8. Click on the Primary IDE Channel(s) 1 at a time if you have 2.
9. Click on the Advanced Settings Tab
10. Check to see what your current transfer mode is.
11. if it's in PIO Mode then that's definetly a problem although it might not be THE problem.
12. If it's in the PIO Mode switch to a DMA or ULTRA DMA mode.
13. If this option is not available...no big deal. Windows XP has a default and sometimes kicks back to PIO, just to p*ss us off I guess.
14. If it's in the PIO mode and you can't switch, click on the Driver tab.
15. Unistall the driver..
16. Restart the computer...Windows XP will automatically detect the device and install the driver.
17. go back to thru steps 1 thru 11.
18. Now you will be able to switch to a DMA Mode or Ultra DMA mode if possible.
19. You gotta restart the computer again, I know..pain in the tail.
20. When the computer restarts...you're speed will be much faster.
To check the task manager simply right click a blank area of your task bar at the bottom of the screen. Then click on Task Manager..you can click on the performance tab to see how much RAM and CPU is being used.
Good Luck

Thanks again. I have checked as advised and DMA was set and running.
I have noticed however that in Task Manager a huge amount of CPU useage is against IEXPLORE.EXE (in caps). I also have explore.exe with a lot less useage. My research has indicated that the IEXPLORE.EXE might be a Trojan however I have run my AV and also Spybot in Safe Mode and found nothing. I have also checked my Win 32 folder and cannot see the IEXPLORE.EXE in it.I just tried Shrink again and it indicated 38 hours to backup! Is there any other free software that will allow re-authoring, that I could try?

You can go into SERVICE and disable a lot of useless junk that runs in the background. You will have to the option to disable, or put items on automatic (on startup) or manual.
I put a lot of the junk on manual. That way you can always start it up whenever.
