I'm a newbie here...so be gentle
I'm using the latest version of DVD Shrink, everytime, no matter what DVD I'm trying to "backup", when I get to 83% encoding, it locks up, drive stops spinning, nothing???
I defragmented my harddisk thinking that it might have been a storage issue, but it still locks at 83% ... any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!!!

DVDshrink is no longer updated so it can't handle the new sony or microvision copy protection being placed on some of the new movie releases, this can cause it to stop encoding or produce an error condition.
Keeping it FREE:
To get around this you could try a very good ripper/decrypter called DVDFab decrypter, it'a a whole movie ripper so you'll still need DVDshrink to reauthor the DVD if you want to remove any unwanted extras and shrink the files to fit onto a single layer DVD.Once DVDFab is done ripping, open the files using DVDshrink's open files tab and proceed using DVDshrink as usual.
get DVDFab decrypter here:
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
If DVDshrink won't open the files ripped by DVDFab then you'll need to process them thru VobBlanker first (vobblanker will produce another set of files, put the files produced by vobblanker in another folder on you desktop and call it VIDEO_TS), once vobblanker is done open the files it produced using DVDshrink as described above.
get vobblanker here:
http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm
$$
The easiest way to get around the copy protection is to purchase Anydvd, it's a driver that runs in the backround helping DVDshrink crack the copy protection and produce a backup. It comes with a 21 day free trial, check it out here:

Hi xXxTreMe1,
Welcome to afterdawn. If you are trying to backup some of the newer dvds dvd shrink hasn't been updated for awhile so it cannot bypass the latest protection. I suggest going to http://bbmayo.home.comcast.net/. There you will find guides and you might try dvdfab decrypter (free) as it is updated pretty regular and can bypass some of the latest dvd protection. Also you may want to try the combo of anydvd with clonedvd2 they have a 21 day free trial period and if you wish to purchase before or after your trial period is up you can goto slysoft (their website), type in the word afterdawn and get a discount.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/298284 this thread somewhat explains the discount and on the first link I provided there is also a tutorial on using anydvd and clonedvd2. Good luck and post back if you need further assistance.
Dang johnl23 beat me to the punch..as long as they get the help they are looking for.

Thanks for the help guys...I'll look into that as a fix
oddly enough....if I let it run and the computer doesnt lock up totally, it backs it up, just takes about 1 hour to do it
so let me get this right ....
open the disk and decrypt with DVDFab ... save it to my harddrive, then open it with DVDShrink to reauthor it - I hate all the previews and junk .... then back it up AGAIN?
Finally, I burn using Nero6, but that's after I did the above two steps..correct?

1. Rip to HDD using DVDFab Decrypter
2. Reauthor with DVD Shrink (make sure you have burning with Nero enabled), choose your DVD burner as your target and Nero will automatically burn the movie for you.
DVDFab shouldn't take that long to rip...check two things.
1. Make sure you disc is free of scratches and dirt.
2. Make sure your transfer method hasn't reverted into PIO mode via this guide courtesy of alkohol: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Hi,
First to address the slow process of backing up try http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/ as after 6 errors during ripping/ burning your drive may revert to pio mode and needs to be in dma mode.
Yes the first 2 steps are correct you can use shrink in re-author mode to remove the adverts, trailers and any other junk you don't want. I am not a current user of nero but the author of shrink now does nero recode for them so you may want to do a search on here to see if nero recode will offer the same re-author function. Feel free to post back with any additional questions.
Boy you guys are really on it this morning.

OK...I viewed the guides, but when I pulled up my advanced settings, the Device 0 was set to what the guide requested, but my Device 1 had a transfer mode : DMA if avaiable Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode
Do I change the device 1 setings as well??

and.....oddly enough my Secondary IDE Channel hs Transfer Mode : DMA if available Current Transfer Mode Ultra DMA Mode 2
Why are the current transfer modes different from primary to secondary (I back up ALL my DVD files to a slave harddive ... is this the reason for the different current modes between prinmary and secondary?)

Hi,
Yes all your drives should be in dma mode. And if you had ripping/ burning issues with your primary drive (assuming 1 is a dvd burner and the other is a dvdrom (read only)) then after a certain amount of errors, bad or dirty discs yes that would be a difference.

Recode is basically the same program as DVD Shrink in a different skin. The only thing I don't like about it is the Main Movie mode and Full Disc mode are on a separate screen, whereas DVD Shrink you can toggle between the two modes to see the differences in compression. You can't insert still pics etc. in Recode either, if you want to backup the full disc.
