I have a friend who use's shrink to back up his movies and lately it has been very slow. The itial opening takes 5 min when it use to take only 1 min. It seems like the buffer memory is not available. Last time this happened he formated the computer and it was running fine again for a few weeks. I killed all his start up programs increased his virtual memorey and it did not make a difference after rebooting. Is there any ideas of anything I can try? clearing out any other temp files maybe?

Check and make sure DMA mode has been enabled for all of the drives (ie..hard drive, burners)

here's a guide if needed:

Make sure shrink isn't set to run in low priority mode.
Make sure your friend isn't running low on HDD space.
Defragment the drive.
Run a spyware scan.

I'm willing to bet the house that it is the DMA. It sounded exactly like me before I reset it.

I tried the all the ideas above and it didnt make much difference.. Why would formatting it make it run faster? I assume the DMA is same when first formatted, too now.. So what would make it so much slower?

Any other ideas besides reformatting?

Try uninstalling shrink, then reinstall. Just to make sure you're runnung the current version, you can get it here;

http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

Note: Check the AEC quality settings in Shrink, as that can add more time, if shrink shows a compression level of less than 100%, then the AEC quality settings will kickin and shrink will take longer to analyze and encode the movie. This is normal if you're using the AEC quality settings, to make sure video quality is the best it can be.
