Hello all,

I'm a newbie, so please bare with me. From what I have researched, these two programs are the best solution for such movies as ?Memories of a Geisha? and ?Copote?.
The thing that really confuses me is how to open or bring the ?video_ts? images to DVD Shrink for further tweaking. I am under the assumption that ?.iso? files are needed to burn a movie. So how does one bring all those ?video_ts? images into one ?.iso? file????
For those who were successful with ?Memories of a Geisha? and ?Copote?, I really need some advice here.

Welcome to the forum. You can burn the DVD using the .iso files or the .vob,.bup,.ifo files. There are also many ways to backup a DVD. Do you have Nero?

Haruka086,
Maybe this guide will help you. I take it you have DVDFAB Decrypter and DVDShrink

You will need DVDDecrypter to burn the .iso: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

1.Using DVDFAB Decrypter rip the disk to HD

2. Make a folder on the desktop and call it Rip Movies

3.In DVDDecrypter go to Mode>iso>write and on the lower right set the speed to 4X. Now exit this program

4.In Shrink click >"Open Files"( find the files DVDFAB Decrypter ripped to HD and it will analyze. If it has a problem then you will have to use VobBlanker on the files and then use Shrink. The reason for this is there might be structural problems and VobBlanker will straighten them out

In Shrink- Setup to use DVDDecrypter

5.Under Edit: Go to Preferences: Then go to File I/O and make sure " enable burning w/ Nero" does not have a check Mark there

6. Select Target Backup

7. Open the drop down box and find" Iso Image File and burn w/ DVDDecrypter". Make sure that it shows in the box

8.Under select Target Image File: Browse to you find the folder on the desktop called "Rip Movies"

9. Click what ever quality settings you want and then at the bottom click OK and you now wait

Hey Car.Mike,

You hit it on the nail with this. Thank you. VOBblanker definetly did the trick. Yes, I heard of the "ANYDVD" software, but this approach is sure fire way.

Car.Mike, I followed your directions precisely with "An Unfinished Life." However, Shrink required more than 3 hours for encoding, and finally quit with the message that it had run out of memory! It is buffering the entire folder, apparently, and it is true that I don't have that much space available for paging files on my hard drive.

I never had this problem when using DVD Decrypter and Shrink together. But DVD Decrypter couldn't rip "An Unfinished Life" and DVD Fab Decrypter could. I thought the process would be the same, but I have tried it 3 times with the same result--it quits encoding at 42%.

I am not familiar with VobBlanker. Is this something that might solve my problem?

Many thanks!

Scarlett8,
Are u using Nero for encoding? I ran into a similar issue. I used DVD Decrypter and it worked fine and then ran Nero recode and that at first went fine, but then upon burning it failed. When u have attempted a process once and it failed u lose use of certain features and settings, unless u create a new profile... but that's neither here nor there. What I was forced to do is only recode the MAIN folder(main movie) and then burn with EasyCD6 and It came out great. YES EVERYONE, NO CONFLICTS using Nero6, EassyCD6, DVD Decrypter, DVDShrink v3.2, DVDFAB etc. all at the same time... I've seen postings about conflicts and don't know what y'all are talkin' 'bout, this combo is just fantastic!!! The only reason I can imagine getting conflicts is if u install entire EasyCD package and/or updates... Now that would definately cause conflicts, but the conflicts often start elsewhere w/ other programs and Easycd's additional programs that come w/ softeware package. Only install EasyCD v6 Creator Classic and everything else u need for it will be automatically installed w/ it.

Below is a site w/ instructions on how to use VobBlanker. You can substitute Shrink for Recode. VobBlanker corrects the structural problems that come up w/ the movies that have the newer encryptions

By the way... by no means am I a newbie w/ the exception of being a new member of this forum! If u have any Q's feel free to ask I just might respond... give reasonably good detail of your issue though, and I just might have the answer. By the way, I have not had to use vobBlanker for anything yet, but I do have a copy. If u need me to give advise about this program I'll have to be forced to replicate exactly what u are doing with same movie etc. or a good matching example or guinea pig. Good luck to all! and happy burnig!

jkitall,
The problem everyone has w/ Roxio is the DLA Packet writing program. It interrupts the burn even if you are not using Roxio at all. Nero INCD does the same thing but I know of no one that installs INCD( Nero version of a Packet writing program). Most people use Nero because most of the burning programs use Nero if you have it set to automatically burn the DVD if the program does not have an internal burning Engine. But if it works for you go for it as I have no problem w/ Roxio.

Thanks for helping the others here on the forum

jkitall: No, I am using Shrink to encode. Shrink had no problem opening the files ripped with DVDFabDecrypter--it just stalled out on the encoding at 42%.

Car.Mike: I have downloaded the latest Beta of VobBlanker and printed the instructions you suggested. I first tried blanking each Video_TS file and ended up with a 62MB folder! I then tried the "Idiot-proof" instructions by setting the "Input" and "Output" folders and clicking "Process." I ended up with a 7.42GB folder, which is a little smaller than the original Video_TS folder, but no Postcommands were changed into Precommands.

I have Shrink running again right now. It has just about completed the Deep Analysis and will then start the encoding process. I have it set to burn the ISO with DVD Decrypter, provided it gets through the entire encoding process this time. I will let you know if I run into the same problem--or if VobBlanker was the solution I needed.

Many thanks for your help!

car.mike,

I have these apps running and no issues? Still don't know what dilly yo. All works fine.

Scarlett8,

U might want to get Nero, it's cheap enough(me thinks $39.99?), just be wary of the latest updates as it pertains to running Shrink v3.2. I actually recieved Nero suite 6 free w/ hardware... pretty sweet deal huh? I get all the updates free... the only thing is I have to use Nero Express instead of ROM but it seems to be the same to me and all other features are there(recode and all the others)... all the same full use and features. Package came free w/ burner it also came w/ PowerDVD. PowerDVD is good for viewing dvds after running the decryption to folder on HD... u can tell if any issues unreported by programs occured. Under normal circumstances u should be able to view the movie as u would from original disc. This is similar to ANALYSIS, with the exception of not having to deal with minor reprocussions if it fails. PowerDVD will read at 32X and goes through approximately as fast as ANALYSIS( Nero and Shrink do this ).
I hope this info can help y'all out. 'Till next time... smell ya lata.

Okay, VobBlanker cleared up the problem with buffering; however, it did not remove anything, e.g., previews, warnings, etc., that I thought I understood was part of its normal process. On the other hand, it allowed me to use Shrink to compress and DVD Decrypter to burn, which was my original objective.

Now, can anyone tell me why it takes Shrink over 2 hours to encode a movie? And that's after the 40+ minutes of deep analysis! The quality is great, but I could sacrifice a little quality for a little more speed. :-) Is there another program that would do almost as good a job as Shrink, but do it a little faster?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction with VobBlanker!

Vobblanker will remove the PUOPs automatically, but to remove anything like previews with vobblanker you need to tell it where they are. Click on each titleset in the upper window and a list will appear in the lower window. Click the ones in this lower window and preview them to see what they are. If it's something you want blanked out, you simply click the "blank" button to the right and when you process your DVD it will be replaced by a very tiny clip thus saving you all that space.

Scarlett8,

These proesses should not take so long... then again, how fast is your PC and what type CPU? How much RAM do u have and what type? Do u have all kinds of unnecessary apps and progs running in the backgroung? Get rid of all the stuff unnecessary on bottom right (taskbar), run defragmentation of hard drive and clean up your HD by getting rid of all temp files, cookies, spyware, viruses, cache, and history. If that don't work and u have a reasonably fast PC w/ lots of RAM, try increasing your virtual memory. The whole process of copying or backing up such media usually takes me(and my PC) about 40-45 minutes. Good luck w/ that :)

jkitall,
You have given me a lot to think about! The computer that I use for all DVD work is a Dell D600 notebook. It has a 1.6GB CPU and 512MB of RAM--not sure what type it is. It came with a small 20GB hard drive, so I added an external USB drive with another 20GB hard drive that I had on hand. I do have an 80GB HD that I had intended using but thought that the 20GB was sufficient. I guess I was wrong?

I do use both drives when working with DVDs. The applications are all stored on the C: drive, but the Video files that are created are stored on the E: drive--with the exception of the VobBlanker files which I made a folder for on the C: drive.

So far as viruses are concerned, I do have antivirus software running, and I am in the process of updating Spybot right now. I am suspicious that I may have some network-wide problems since we are experiencing aberrant behavior on several of our computers! As a matter of fact, Spybot is still trying to update with no success--I got a "!!!bad checksum!" error on the Advanced Detection Library updates, and the update has completely stalled out on "Detection Rules." <BIG SIGH!> Not exactly what I wanted to be doing with my Easter Sunday! Chasing bugs instead of Easter eggs--and I suspect these are going to be extremely hard to find since NAV and Spybot both reported a clean system on the computer I am using right now, and I strongly suspect that is not the case.

In any event, after I am satisfied that I have clean computers, I will try your other suggestions, e.g., defrag, temp files, cookies, etc. I did increase the paging file space to 1.5GB which is more than the recommended amount. Should it be even more?

Thanks again for the help. Hopefully, I can get this sorted out fairly soon.

Many thanks!

Scarlett8,

U really should use more than 1 antispyware progs... There are lots of free ones, try going to www.lavasoft.com/ and download Ad-ware Personal Edition SE v1.06. This prog will get rid of adware, sptware and those special unwanted tracking cookies. This software is not real time protection, manually operated, but it works great! Updates and all... and it's FREE! The other thing is: what version of NAV do u have? I have Symantec AV 2000... I'm a little disapointed in a coupla things, but it seems to do the job. I try to run at least 3 antispyware prog at all times. Not a 1 covers everything, so u do what u can and just pick the best ones. Also run all updates for everything including microsoft products, antispyware, AV prog etc. U might also want to go off line completely remove Spybot and complete a fresh install... then run updates for that too. I know this sounds like a lot of work, but these things are nacessary and should be done on a regular basis to keep your fun exactly that... Fun! Do your best and keep talkin' to people u'll learn a lot from people on line... u can't beat that... FREE KNOWLEDGE! :) Tell me how things went. Things should get easier from there on out. Oh by the way u might think about cleaning up your registry too, don't do it manually, it's a pain in the F@#$ing A&%@. Buy a reg cleaner package for that. Now take a deep breath and do the right thing. :) Happy trails... jkitall

Scarlett8,

Just recieved email from Car.Mike... gave me this link to give to u to clean your registry. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download414.html I haven't tried it yet, but I will.. fo sho. Nice to know there's still a free reg cleaner prog out there... this is the first I've seen for winxp. Not that I've been lookin'.. like to think I'm careful (lol) (not that it really has anything to do w/ it usually when it becomes an issue). Anyway, thanks Car.Mike and good luck Scarlett8. :) Happy trails!

CrapCleaner is another good one for the registry (and a whole lot more). I like the fact that it'll back up your registry before it makes any changes. It's free too :)
