You can use the multimeter to test the fuses, though it could also be the drive motor.

I also have the same problem.
I used the tape-mod on my daughters (brand new) v12, it worked fine for a week or so then just stoppped spinning.
I figured it must be the motor and since I had opened it up I could not take it back to the shop.
I bought this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8286752883
motor and lens replacement, fitted it, but its still the same ?!?!!!
Sounds like we both have the same problem here, so I would really appreciate some help on this too.

KainX, how is your system modded.
i know nothing about what the tape and tissue mod might do to a system. It is just a cheap rig job.
But it looks like you have eliminated the motor and laser if they were installed correct and had no effect.
Did you completelu unmod they system to see if it worked?

If the machine thinks that the drive is open it might not spin it.

could be a problem with the tissues and tape. if they come unstuck or dont have enough pressure on them they will think that the lid is open. take the top off and hold down the 2 sensors and keep the disk brake back as well. if it spins or you get any movement it is the sensors, and you will need to either to buy a magic switch pro v3 or re tape it.

this is what relly happened
i was using the tape mod method, but i had something in the oven in my kitchen.
so i left the ps2 on the cd switch screen while the disc was spinning with a original game in it.
I came back and the system wouldn't spin at all
so could it be a broken fuse

if it could the does anyone know anything about electric multimeters, i don't know how to use one

You'll need to know what version ps2 you have, then find a diagram here: http://www.psrtech.co.uk/ A cheap digital version will work well enough and not have too many extraneous features. Set the multimeter to the lowest ohm setting, without the leads touching anything it should read like 1 or infinity or overlooad or error. Now, touch the leads to each end of a fuse and the reading should drop to a low number, if it doesn't you've found a bad fuse. This measures resistance, an open circuit has essentially infinite resistance, whereas a closed circuit will typically have some minimal resistance.

I'm having the same issue Yesterday I tried to install the Magickey is my slimline but I could'nt get the back piece in so I took the case off and made a piece to keep the sensor down. Now the disk won't spin. I even reverted it back to normal and it still dosent work. It still boots up fine though.

i had the same problem.

now i have fixed it

try this.

take off the top cover to expose the switch.

power on the console.

depress the rear sensor, and the sensor that is at the front just above the power switch.

if the laser moves and blinks at you it works fine. if not move onto these steps.

undo the four screws that hold down the laser assembly and lift it on a angle towords the edge.

put it back and screw it back in.

try the sensor thing again.

if no luck still, get a screwdriver and touch the sensor solder pads on the side closest to toe laser. also see if touching the metal housing near the sensors. while doing this try the sensors. hopefuly this works.

once fixed patch up the sensors with the magic thingy.

hope this works for you.

it worked for me and my v12 ps2

With the lid off try opening and closing the drive, the motor should do a test spin when the drive closes to see if there is a disk in it.

take off the lid to your ps2 and put a game in

now connect the console to the tv and power and switch it on. then without getting your fingers in the way depress the sensors and see if the disc spins and reads.

let me know if it loads up.

if the laser moves before when you press the sensors, then the disc should spin when the laser picks up a disc.

Seen it a lot..if none of the above works to get the disk to spin..try an audio cd, If that spins you need a new laser..they just fail all at once. Another *quality* component from Sony......

I suppose I could buy a new laser assembly but I don't want to waste more money and find out thats not the issue.

Not spinning at all then....maybe the spindle motor..or the control chip..dunno..by this point I've scrapped them for possible spare parts..
I can't honestly say I waste much time with them when they stop working..not worth the time to me. I can buy new for the value of 7 hours working on one...

Have a check around at http://www.ps2scene.com

But I think you'll find your wasting your time... sorry :(

There is a fuse for the spindle drive, it's possibl that it's bad.

which fuse is for the spindle drive, that has to be it

the laser moves into position, the cd won't spin at all

so my best chance is the fuses

Hi Dan (Bout2Bus)

Never posted before and only aware of the forum as I searched (in vain) for a solution to this problem. I too had a V12 slimline which wouldn't spin discs. I too bought a new laser from ebay. I too installed it and found the problem remained. It was only by chance on reading a guide on Ebay that I emailed someone offering help. They advised that there is a small blob of solder (something to do with anti-static for transportation) which needs to be removed for the new laser to work. On there advice I dismantled my PS2 removed the laser, removed the blob of solder, replaced laser and rebuilt PS2 and Bobs your Aunties live in lover - it works perfectly!

Email me at david dot a dot mitchell at fsmail dot net (replace dots and ats - no spaces) and I will send picture if this is the problem.
