Sony are being mad for setting the price tag of the ps2 at £425 here in UK, thats approx $799 for you in the US.
Apparently theres no cheaper option unlike US as well. This is pathetic.
I wasnt going to get a ps3 (Wii all the way) but this baffles me anyway.
Theres no way ps3 is going to sell out at that price, 90% of people here in the UK dont even have HDTV so it hasnt got real advantage over the 360.

I can see a lot of sales decrease because of this move...

Man $799 in uk that's outrageous.Geez no offence but maybe it does suck it be a gamer in the uk.How much is the 360 over there?

It will probably sell out still though because of rich people.Don't feel bad it's the same here(u.s.a.) the working man can't afford one, but the rich will have one first day.

well do not get me wrong 425 pounds (803 dollars is really bad when comparing to the america price, but when you live in england for so long you just get used to being over priced.

i did get to a point where i could not stand the uk, just felt like we had everything crap, wheather is crap, cost of living is horrible, you live in rubbish areas unless you have money (but this only realy makes a big differnec in london). so i was going to apply for america to study in university but for certain reasons i am just going to stay here, in london and carry on getting over priced. lol.

i can only speak for the states on this one, for the obvious reason, but there are 3 gamestop stores within a 5 mile radius where i live. i typically stop by or call once a week or so to see if there is anything new about the ps3 happening (pre-ordering). to the clerk and maybe some others surprise, they actually received more people inquiring about the ps3 and related info after e3 and the price being announced. the store i usually go to was making a callin list to inform people of when they can preorder, which they now have stopped doing becuase there is an overwelming number of people. i believe the figure was 83 when i asked. so i guess maybe it varies for different places or areas, but around here its pretty BIG. oh and if you dont think 83 is a high number just figure how many each store is likely to get...prolly something like 10 if their lucky. could be more or less, dunno yet

It will sell so good that many common folks won't get one.Pre-order is the only way I'll get one b/c they'll be sold out where I live. The price maybe high, hell I thought the 360 price was but with rich, christmas shoppers, and hardcore fans all trying to get one I really can't see them not selling out within a week.

Well I'd have to say one advantage of being in the UK/Australia etc is we get our hardware and software later on (a negative in that sense) but this usually results in problems being rectified - for example i remember Star Ocean on PS2 had serious glitches in the Japanese version, and there were some overheating issues with the Xbox 360 when released in the US (was it the US?). It's not all that bad navi95 :)

On that note, given the price tag on the PS3, you can't tell me if you were prepared to buy a decent piece of hardware like that (at such an exorbitant price tag as well) that you wouldn't go for the better model anyway - everyone loves a bigger HD!! I know I would anyway.

I think that Sony have wronged in two ways - their high price tag will eliminate a small percentage of buyers (most die hards will by a PS3 anyway, but parents who are buying for their kiddies might opt for a cheaper alternative next christmas season) meaning they may lose some of their lead in market share to Microsoft.

The other mistake I think is they've released their console after one of their competitors (MS) have - the Psone and PS2's success was helped by being the first console released in each of their generations.

Despite that the PS3 will still be a success, but i think the Wildcard is Wii which could either bomb or rocket to success (i hope we don't have another Sega on our hands!).

I dont think they shot themselves in the foot If you look at the two biggest markets are Japan & U.S.A.The UK is not one(No disrepsect) of there top markets so i will hurt a little. but they know if they kept the two top markets on tap they will still sale more consoles.Plus why pay less and try to upgrade your PS3 in about a year or to when its going to cost you more when you can save money buying the 599 system.

Yeah true. Sony will have a definite stranglehold on Japan. But as I said earlier the Wii could go nuts because of the controller's aesthetics. And Japan love those crazy ideas and innovations - and for that matter they also love Nintendo too...
I agree with you on that Damon Dash, it's more economical to purchase the better package straight up...

i dont see why people will upgrade their ps3, if they already got a HDTV it would be stupid to buy the core option in the first place.
My point being is that UK are YEARS behind with HDTV compared to the US so its stupid not to release the core option here.

Its the same with having the blue-ray drive, most people wont have the equipment to fully utilize it and the drive also adds to the final price.
Sure, its great for the amount of space but if it drives the cost up of production because more expensive equipment is needed by the developers to get such Hi-res images etc and the 5.1 DTS sound and wot not. This I would have thought would increase the price of the software where Sony cant allow low profit margins as that is where they are gonna make their bulk of money then it will which will make expensive software with the already expensive ps3.
This is gonna be very costly to consumers, liked mentioned before the hardcore sony will dish out but the regular people will think twice, no matter if it is sony.

And this is where Wii comes in......

HDTV's are still in a small percentage, and even smaller for the tv's that actually have 1080p resolution...

out of my whole family (im asian so thats a BIG family) and friends I only know 1 person that has a plasma screen. Satellite TV here has just converted to HDTV, theres a gud 3 or 4 years I reckon before it really becomes mainstream.
I dont think too many people recognize the significant difference unless they are looking at a set specifically in a store so its quite slow going right now.

Based on this im sure you can realise why I think its stupid for sony not to release the core option.

I heard that only a small percentage of games will be using 1080p and most will use 1080i/720p.

I think you're correct, but 1080p @ 60fps (at least) was an often hyped aspect of the ps3's graphic capabilities in comparison to the 360...

That really depends on how many 1080p tv's will be sold in the nex five years. Many people speculate that 720p hdtv will become obsolete like 420p did. However most don't think it will for a while off.

The reason is because the cable companies aren't able to produce a stable signal at 1080p yet.And without any content in 1080p it will be irrelevent. But it will be a major factor on ps4 and xbox 3.

But as far as ps3.If I was(rich lol and) given the choice to play in 1080p compaired to 720p. I would choose 1080p and that's what sony is hoping for.

Unfortunately the situation is quite similar in Australia. Basically no one i know (apart from a few rich exceptions lol) have HD Tv's yet, and besides which i'm not sure if we even get HD telecasts yet. Most people have an SD set top box, to run on an analog TV just to recieve a digital signal. There's no point in having HD technology yet on that point, and i doubt PS3 will change that over here until HD becomes a mainstream premise (kind of like broadband etc).

i dont think anyone would argue with that

I just dont think its ready yet, should definately be used with the future generation of consoles tho.
I would have thought by then Nintendo would also join the HDTV era as in like 4 or 5 years most of population would be at that level as well.

I just think they should learn to walk first before trying to run if you guys get me

Yeah maybe just try and wean us ordinary consumers onto the technology. Whats the situation in Japan - they'd be ahead of everyone wouldn't they? If so maybe since Sony has a mass market share over there, they think the inclusion of HD capabilities is warranted simply for that market alone.

Yeah japan is the world leader in new technologies in general. But no. Hd isn't just popular in japan, u.s.a is pretty much going that way, and uk is getting very serious about it. Those three markets influence the rest of the world.

Yeah I guess so. The goings on in Australia really don't dictate big decisions in the Video game industry whatsoever lol. I'm surprised to hear Japan aren't big on such a technology - most of the stuff is manufactured by Japanese companies (Sony Toshiba Panasonic etc etc). I'd have thought they'd be the first to adopt it.
