Welcome to AD. Looks like waynekusa has provided all of the greatest free tools for you already. It is not hard to "compress/trasncode" and or "shrink" a dvd/movie via DVD Shrink. All you need to do is click on "BACKUP" and let DVD Shrink does its thing. However, if you want better quality, then you'll need to check/click on "Deep Analysis + AEC: Maximum Smoothness or Sharp (DVD Shrink's enhancement quality), this process takes longer, but you'll like the results better in the end.
Again, below are some tools that I used and still use on a daily basis to rip and backup all of my dvds/movies:
** DVDFAB Decrypter - to rip (one of the best FREE ripper at the moment)
** VobBlanker - to process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file for security purpose, to correct/fix any left over junks (fake pgc, dummy cells, invalid structural, etc.) and to "blank, strip or cut out" unwanted junks like "FBI Warnings, rating screens/logos, previews/trailers, director's commentary, extra, etc.)
** Nero Recode 2 - to transcode my movie/s for any 70% or higher on the "Video Quality" (less compressions needed).
** DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.7 - to encode my movie/s for any 69% or lower on the "Video Quality" (more compressions needed).
** Nero Burning Rom or Express - to burn.
You can have DVD Shrink to transcode and have either DVD Decrypter (FREE) and ImgBurn (FREE) to burn the final ISO Image.
