I replaced my Sony burner out for the Liteon SHM-165H6S04C. It work for the first few times with my burner, but now shrink will just freeze or close with no response. Is there a resolution to this problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi tru003,
I don't believe that your problem is with DVD Shrink. Freezing during encoding or burning is usually caused by insufficient resources. Encoding, recoding and DVD video burning are the hardest, most processor and memory (RAM) intensive things you'll ever do with your PC.
Things to try:
1. Don't multitask ! Even a little ! Allow your PC to do its work w/o sharing it's resources with any other tasks.
2. If you aren't doing anything else on your PC when you're using DVD Shrink, consider cleaning up your msconfig, Startup tab configuration. Turn off everything except your A/V and F/W proggys. Do not connect to the Internet while doing DVD video work.
3. Check your systems "Performance" using yourPC's Task Manager.
4. If you're still experiencing difficulty after trying the above, "pop" on back with your system's specs especially your "free memory" both RAM and HD.
Cheers,
Pete

Thanks!I did not have anything runnning at the time. I usually go into mscongfig to stop programs from running. I never had this problem before when I was using shrink regardless if I had program running. Could it be something else?

You didn't say in which part of the process you are having the problem. Is it in the ripping/transcoding part or when it is time to burn? If ripping/transcoding here is some information on this problem
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45726
Also, what movie are your doing, some newer protected movies will cause Shrink to freeze.
If it is in the burning process, what program are you using to burn? Have you ripped your file with another program before using Shrink? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Shrink.

it sounds like when your ripping and if your kinda new shrink its very outdated when it comes to alot of the new copy protection on dvd's nowawdays. i can tell u if your only using just shrink to back up your dvd's then your pretty much outdated u may be able to get some movies copied but AnyDVD is the way to go or dvdfab to rip your movies an shrink after or with AnyDVD just run it in the background.

Try the free ripper DVDFab Decrtyper and this will rip all new protections.
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
Rip to your HDD and then open the files with Shrink, and see if this works. If you still have problems with the file then you can try running it through VobBlanker, whick is also free. Here are a couple of guides.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154 http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/backup%20with%20DVDFABDecrypter,S...
You can get VobBlanker here
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm
You can also try the trial version of AnyDVD which is a driver that will run in the background with Shrink and then just use Shrink. Or you can use the builtin ripper that comes with AnyDVD and rip to your HDD. This will also fix any blank or unreferenced cells, just right click on the redfox in the tray and choose rip DVD to hard drive.

Make sure you have enough space on your HDD, 15g is minimum 20 better. Do a defrag, sypware clean and virus scan. No multi-tasking or internet surfing.
If this is a laptop computer, make sure it is not overheating, you may want to think about the pads that have a fan in it.

I am having similar problems during the decoding process with shrink.I get a message saying file D could not be read ; cyclic redundancy check.Could this be due to the new copy protection softwares because it happens with some of the new DVDs (for example when I was trying to make a backup of my Narnia disc).
This is before the backup stage.I have been successfully using Shrink and Nero until now.
arniebear, I'll try your suggestion and try DVDfab but what is the next step after ripping the files to HDD?And do you use Nero after this as usual (to burn)?

Yes, Narnia is one of the problem movies. It has ripguard on it and Shrink alone cannot handle this movie. Use DVDFab Decrypter and rip it to your HDD and the open the file and process through Shrink as usual and yes if you have Nero just burn as you always do. If Shrink does give you another error then try using VobBlanker to remove the bad cells. However, DVDFab has been updated two times since this movie so should be able to handle it.

I've been having a problem with DVD Shrink as of the last 3 days - the burn process apparently starts (I get to 1%) and freezes there.
I rip my movies using Decrypter and burn using Shrink. I've never had this problem before but noticed this happening for all my movies that I'm trying - both old and new.
My sixth sense tells me the computer is over-heating, so I'd like to find out if you know of other people that have had this same problem? We're in the middle of a heat wave (isn't everyone, really) and my PC is running at 40 degrees C - hotter than it's usual running temperature of about 32 C.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
