Does anyone know the difference between AC3 5.1-ch audio and DTS 5.1-ch. The DTS takes up more space so I assume it is better but would I ever know the difference? Is it worth the trade off of having to compress the DVD more?

The only difference you'll notice is if you're in surround sound. I *think* (I could be wrong) that DTS is better in surround sound.

You have to have a player that will play DTS, some players are not equipped. Many say DTS is superior, but since I only have 5.1 can't tell you that. And you are right it can take up a quarter of the disk space.

Hi :)

You will get better sound when watching a movie in DTS compared to DD 5.1 IMO. The sound is louder and clearer.

As for quality loss it all depends on what software you are going to use and how much compression is needed.

One thing to remember, is, if you take the movie to a friends house and their dvd player does not support DTS you will get no sound during playback.

I have noticed DTS is not as loud as 5.1 but seems to spread the sound differently. I have it on my PC and it seems voices/speech get directed more to the front speakers while ambient sound more to the back. The reason the DTS sound file is bigger is it uses a higher bitrate, and this higher fidelity sound produces less hiss at higher volume. (I told)
