This new console cycle has been predicted to be a close fight with ps3 and x360 as the heavier wieghts and wii as more of an under-dog.
However it is possible for nintendo to quitely steal the show from both sony and microsoft. Here's how:
In the current gen we saw a growing trend of the "secondary console". This trend had gamers (mostly hardcore) buying multiple consoles (commonly two personaly i have all three) and sticking mainly to one and using the other for the exclusives.
How can this trend affect the outcome of the next-gen? Well if the price of the wii is just right (most likely it will be) then many gamers will use it as their secondary console. Also the experince that the wii offer is, for the most part, rather unique, however, not necessarily the constant choise for all gamers. Then there are the Nentendo exclusives nothing has to be said about those.
Here's how Nintendo win now:
If the race between Sony and Microsoft ends up being close for example; Sony sells 90 million and Microsoft sell 80 million (just for arguement's sake) and half for all ps3 and x360 owners buy's a wii thats 85 million ok Microsoft is beat. Sony? Just as not all ps3 x360 owner will have a wii, not all wii owners will have ps3 or x360. So if they sell 10 million wiis that a exclusive to thier owners then thats a win for them.

Remember this is all speculation on just how gamer will react but it's not too far from reality.

i kind of got lost there at the end, but i think i understand what you are saying. all three consoles have their differences, but i don't think nintendo belongs in the mix of things. its kind of like putting a chevy malibu in a class with mercedes-benz and bmws. before most get all worked up let me explain....

both the ps3 and 360 are aimed at offering nextgen performance and graphics. nintendo took a different approach through innovation with their new controller. they seemed to key in on gameplay rather than performance and graphics. im sure the wii will have some nice looking games, but even their best game won't compare to the likes of MGS4 or Gears of War....

overall i think the wii is meant for younger audiences, but thats not to say someone older can't or won't have as much fun as someone else. most of the games everyone is talking about for the ps3/360 have an expected "M" rating (mature audience). the earlier name nintedo used, "revolution" in my opinion would have been more appealing to older people than wii is. im sure nintendo will fair well, but IMO they have a different target market than sony and M$. the most appealing factor the wii offers is the library of games from the previous systems...

The short version is that wii will draw ps3 and x360 owner to just buy it for one reason or another

Nintendo will put up a good fight this generation. They have alot more third party support and are trying to draw away from the childish impression that gamecube gave many Nintendo fans.

My guess is that Sony will win again this generation but not as much as last time.

I think It goes like this :

#1.sony PS3
#2.nintendo wii
#3.microsoft xbox 360

That might amaze because the 360 has been out for a year but it's just my opinion, nothing more. We'll see when the ps3 and wii comes.I think before ps3 and wii can hit it's peek(that last year of great games) ,ms will release another console just like this time too.

In the end I think ms will take the lead ,but not this go around.

Well if you have an open mind you could say that it could happen because thus far, Sony and Nintendo have more to offer with their consoles compared to Microsoft.

well beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.I just played halo on the pc and man it was fun...360 has lot's of games but I dunno, anything could happen.I think the hype factor will play in for the wii and ps3 as well.

Hey 360 could very well take it, but well see....I don't think so.

ha? the 360 taking it? right, ok. a system with less to offer than the little kids in mexico shouting "chiclet." the wii, imo, is not going to entertain me, and i probbly wont get one. if i do it would be a year or 2 down the road cuz i'll be happy with the beauty of my ps3. i've lived with a 5200 long enought, i dont want to keep seeing those ind of graphics, especially in a next gen console. but nintendo never cares about graphics. the wii has at most xbox graphics, and that is an old console. i wanna get out of the stone age.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

HDTV - $1500
Speakers - $370
Rcvr - $290
PS3 - $800 (counting accesories, games etc)

Total to get out of the stone age: $2960.

Thanx for the input. My 17 y/o brother is off to college and is taking a part time job. He wanted some advice on budget components for a PS3 based gaming setup with HDTV.

yup. i dont like to progrss slowly, and when i get a job i can jump in fast then i have it to take with me into the world.

the price difference even when substituted between all that and a ps3 and 360 is insignificant. also, the price for all that is the price of a pc w/o monitor as good as the ps3.

@anubis66 i can understand why you said that, but especially concerning video/audio equipment sometimes the worst thing you can do is go all out, all at once. it may be difficult, but piecing together the right system will in the long run save you a crap load of $$$$. typically i think it takes about 2 years or so for most people to get the ideal system they wanted. usually people buy the receiver first then some speakers, and work their way up....

the ps3 can and will, destroy the wii. nintendo are still using childish looking 3d graphics, which is fun for a quick and occasional play but not nearly as fun as sonys up to date, stunning and realistic graphics. its the same everytime the new comsoles are released.

Sony can definately stop Nintendo (a weird phrase, considering Sony is on top), but it will have nothing to do with graphics. It never has before, and I don't see why it would matter now.

yes, but the wii is discraceful in comparison for them. people get the graphics of the wii on an average pc.

I think alot of people are taking the same possition as anubis. The graphics for a new console has to be different from anything u've seen b4

yes. the wii does have innovation, but i like realism more. i dont want to be expected to stand and wave myself around like a ragdoll (as in an interview with a dev, he said "we'd expect you to be standing" and would not quote if u could sit and play, he would change the subject.). when i game, i usually do it to chill and relax away from the RL (real life) and immerse myself into something. i dont wanna be all active, cuz chances are when i get my ps3 imma be baked out of my mind for the 1st week, with little sleep. if i got a wii, i'd be tired and bored with it after maybe 10-15 minutes.

i think the wii will have japan mostly, and the ps3 will rush up to it and pass it once there is a decent price reduction.
