Friends,
Any help or ideas would be appreciated with the problems I'm having with DVD Shrink and the external SONY DVD RW DRU-720A drive I just bought. This Sony DVD Burner is supposed to be able to burn CDs, single-layer DVDs and Dual-Layer (DL) DVDs without any problems. (I use Verbatim blank DVDs for my burning and I have found them to be reliable and not the problem.)
The 2 problems I'm getting are:
1) When I try to burn a movie onto a DL DVD so I can play it on my standalone DVD player, DVD Shrink for some reason makes the DVD a DVD-ROM disc which is not playable in my standalone player.
Here is the exact message that appears as DVD Shrink is burning the DL DVD:
"Writing Tracks
Caching of Files Completed
Burn Process Started at 4X
Burning Layer 1
Book Type automatically set to: DVD-ROM
Burning Layer 2
Burn Process Completed Successfully at 4X"
I never asked for DVD Shrink to set the Book Type to DVD-ROM and when I looked at DVD Shrink's preferences, I couldn't find anything that would allow me to change this. Is there some way to make DVD Shrink burn the DL DVD into something my standalone DVD player can play or do I need to use another program besides DVD Shrink?
2) When I try to burn a movie onto a single-layer DVD-R so I can play it on my standalone DVD player, there is always an error. (Please note that before I bought this external Sony DVD Burner, I had used DVD Shrink successfully to make backup copies on similar DVD-r's using another drive.)
The problem here appears to be similar: DVD Shrink thinks it should only be burning a DVD-ROM disc, but it can't make a single-layer DVD-R into a DVD-ROM disc so an error results. The specific error message is:
9:09:17 PM #25 Text 0 File DVDR.cpp, Line 5348

This Sony DVD Burner should be able to burn single-layer DVD-r's so I don't know what the problem could be. Do I need to switch to another program in order to use this Sony DVD Burner or is the Sony Burner defective? If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your help.

Shrink is not doing this,
Quote: Book Type automatically set to: DVD-ROM
As you can see the booktype is being automatically set by your writer, possibly the fw for the writer is doing this. Many burners will booktype to DVD-Rom because that is a the standard, and playable on all players. If you do not want a booktype set, then try changing the setting in Nero, as Nero burns your disk and not Shrink. Also, Shrink is not a good program for burning a DL disk, try DVD Decrypter in iso read and then iso write mode.
To change the bitset, open the Nero CD/DVD Speed and then make sure your drive is in the box, choose the extras tab, then bitsetting and make sure it reads what you want.

Hey arniebear, i thought those Verbs DL disks why 2.4x max,
well maybe verb got them up to 4x now, havent bought any in a while?
hi giffordal,
if u do what arniebear said for the DL disks i would do ISO read with decrypter then use IMGburn(free) for the ISO write because i think it handles the layerbreak better

well this is my personal oponion of Sony products.
I stopped buying Sony about 10 years ago, because most of their product is worthless junk.
Secondly, these are the pround makers of virus's, spyware and root kits, only stands to reason they would build in anti-piracy software in their devices and products.
Solution, buy an LG product, or one of the other better made dvd's burners on the market.
Sorry, just hate Sony, and everything they stand for.

Thank you for your helpful responses and advice.
I would like to ask a question. What is "IMGburn(free)" that 300Bowler mentioned? Where can I find it and are there any tutorials how to use it?
Thank you again for the responses I have received to my problems. If anyone else has any ideas, I would love to hear from him/her. Thanks again.

I also have shrink and a Sony burner, but my problem is the flip side. I have all of my settings set to booktype DVD+R to DVD-ROM but my burns remain DVD+R after process is complete. Decrypter will booktype to DVD-ROM just fine, but shrink will not.
As arnie, binkie, TY4ever, and DocTY already know I have been obsessed with booktyping lately as they all have helped me out quite a bit. I'm just not sure what I need to do now. I know srink uses Nero as it's burning program so I set the booktype to DVD-ROM in Nero, and the DVD-ROM option is also enabled in shrink. Not sure what I'm supposed to do now. Anyone have suggestions?
Thanks in advance. :)

If you set the booktype in Nero have you tried a burn to see if it works now. Have you tried DVDInfo Pro to booktype, you can use the free version and set the booktype in the program and you disks will be booktyped in all programs. You do not even have to have to program open. The only problem with the free version is that it expires from time to time and you have to dl and install it again. I used this program when I had my Plex 740, which was a rebadged BenQ. Plextools would not recognize it as a Plex so it would not allow it to automatically booktype, and QSuite would not recognize it as a BenQ. DVDInfo was the only program that worked with the drive. Here is the link, make sure you dl the free version if you want to try it.

giffordal,
I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate your problem is not booktyping the disc to dvd-rom. Dvd-rom is what new pressed dvd's are and is the most compatable format for stand alone dvd players. By booktyping your dvd+r's to dvd-rom you are tricking your stand alone player into thinking your discs are new pressed dvd's. There are rare cases however that the stand alone dvd player will only play the DVD-R format. If memory serves me right, toshiba stand alone dvd players are notorious for this. Try burning your DL media at 2.4x. The problem may be that your stand alone player is not compatable with recordable DL media.
joshewah,
Depending on what model sony dvdrw drive you have, you might be able to use the lite-on booktype utility. Give me your drive model and I will determine whether or not the lite-on booktype utility will work and then if it will I will give you a link and usage guide.

just a few things about Sony that I disagree with your statementQuote: I stopped buying Sony about 10 years ago, because most of their product is worthless junk
Everyone is entitled to their opinion so here is mine. I love Sony products. I don't have their burner but I do have a 42"wide screen HD tv that I bought for my mother, a 5 Disk DVD/CD caracel player with HDMI outputs that play 720i and looks great, and a nice Reciever that does everything (500watts of thunder). Over the years I have bought Sony and NEVER had a problem with their products. They seem to keep up with the technology out there and give great products that last a long time. As we speak..... I have the original portable compact disk recorder that my father gave me from my 13th birthday back in 1966! And it's still works! I have had many things over the years and Sony has always been a good manufacturer of technolical products available to the public that withstands time. that's all I wanted to say..... and .....if you have trouble using Sony products..... maybe you should read the manual first! But, that's my 2 cents..... since you added yours.... no disrespect intended..... everyone has opinions.

Mort81, Thanks for the utility. I havent used either program yet because my PS2 (which is also my DVD player) strangely stopped working after I finished playing an emulator on it 2 days ago. I think the laser got messed up somehow and since its a v9 PS2, its impossible to adjust the laser. So it'll be a little while until I am up and running again. :(
Ill keep you posted, and thanks again.
