I downloaded DVD Shrink and attempted to use it to copy from one of my purchased DVD's. I tried to copy the full disc and also using the re-author function to copy just the movie. In both cases the software would crash and would not respond to any inputs. I followed the steps in the guide for both functions and I tried it several times. What is the solution to this situation.

what movie were you trying to do?

it may have been a newer movie that dvdshrink couldn't handle on its own so try using dvdshrink with AnyDVD in the vackground and see if that helps.
you can get a 21 day trial of AnyDVD from www.slysoft.com



on a side note DVD Shrink is no longer being updated it has not been in like almost 3 years.

What would be a good current software package to get that would allow me to backup my DVDs?

your best choice would be CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD . theres a 21 day free trial to try it out . it does all the newer movies the program update for life and the quality is outstanding and it NOT expensive. you can download it here.

remember to use good quality media (Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim) burn at 4x starting out on a clean machine without other programs running while your transcoding and burning. also make sure your running the most current firmware for your drive

many current dvd releases have encryption/authoring that need processing the no-longer-updated dvdshrink cannot provide.

as redice mentioned AnyDVD will do the decryption and has a 21 day free trial.

the freeware routes would be 1. dvdfabdecrypter -> vobblanker -> shrink or 2. ripit4me. a bit of setup and learning time involved, but not really very difficult at all.

they all work on current release encryptions and are updated as needed.

3.Dvd Shrink
4.Dvd decrypter or IMGburn 2 burn
