Hey guys...this marks my first post on AD, but I've been here for a while. I got some HUGE help here when I first tried modding my PS2 and then downgrading my PSP...but here's a problem I haven't found yet (and yes, I did try to search). when I try to run a UMD, it just makes weird sounds and does absolutely nothing, therefore making devhook useless for any ISOs that need FW 1.51+. Is my laser fried? or is it a more minor fix? Any help is appreciated.

Have you dropped the actual PSP, spilt anything on it or done anything that could have potentially damaged it since the last time you ran a UMD?

it sounds like your umd laser is gone!
the sound means the laser head is moving back and fourth (thats normal)
if it makes overaccesive noise maby the screw that moves the head back and fourth is busted!
send me a pm if your looking for parts, or to sell the unit

Thanks for the quick responses guys!

@ BaBaya
It was actually dropped yesterday (I just found out now) but everything else works fine...still plays music as well as the homebrew apps like SNES9X TYL and all that

@ Stuckonit
You say the whole UMD assembly is $80-$120...how much would just the laser cost? and is that in US funds? I'm in Canada.

Thanks again

if ur a noob @ taking thing apart then dont try.
u have to take the whole thing apart and remove the whole umd assembly, remove the umd tray and them remove the laser (vise versa to put the new one back)
corect me if im wrong
ill put up a link once i find one!

To get the umd tray out and laser assembly you have to completely disassemble your psp. Motherboard and all. Just did this yesterday actually. Only took me bout an hour.

Hey man, this happened to me the other day. I actually found something about it on a forum...but can't remember where it was sorry. All you have to do is get a pen or something and GENTLY press the laser towards the spindal. Don't touch the laser though, just the outer casing of it and give it a gental push. You got nothing to lose, and i wouldn't bullshit you as i know what it's like to get false information (bricked 2 psp's with false downgrade info lol). Hope it helps big fella ;)

No, but judging by what you said about dropping it, i'm guessing that your laser being off track is the problem. I dropped mine aswell, it was doing the same thing, just screaming it's guts out like it was trying to read the umd, just not being able to pick it up. Just shut your psp off...i took the battery out, but it prob isn't necessary...then like i said, get the pen and just manuever the laser. Move it a little more and with a little more pressure (don't go overboard though) each time and maybe try moving it away from the spindal and see what happens. Thank f*@k mine worked first...otherwise i woulda given up first go. I really hope this works for u man...if you have to get it repaired the pricks may even update it for you :(

make sure ur @ the side of the laser and apply light to moderate pressure.....u have nothing to loose anyway. if it doesnt work push hard! (u have nothing to loose), u need to push the umd lazer to the left or the righ (prob ganna hear a click)

OK...so here's what I know...the PSP makes that weird noise when loading a UMD...when I push the laser to the far right it makes an ever weirder noise, and when I push it towards the spindle it kinda subsides...when it's at the far left it makes a single buzzing noise about every half second...I tried to look for that forum that Rhazel was talking about but I haven't found it yet...Does anyone know where the laser should be when starting the PSP?
