I don't think Sony is using this as a decoy. Everyone knows the PS3 will be sold out even without this player. The people who will buy this standalone are a totally different class of consumer altogether. They are video/audio enthusiasts who own HDTV's, or front projectors and fairly expensive equipment who would like the best picture quality in the form of BluRay movies. Most of them don't play video games. They're willing to pay top dollar for quality equipment.
They also realize that the first few waves of PS3's will be sold out to video game fans and despite the functionality of the console will not wait for the supply chain to stabilize.
The Pioneer and the Panasonic players are scheduled for release a month earlier than the Sony. You can be sure they will be sold at a brisk rate especially after the disappointment with the Samsung player.

They dont need decoy but it's still a good way to sell BRD to those of us not willing to switch to it for $1000.
I would have very little interest in BRD had it not been for ps3.
(i still dont car about HD-DVD

I look at bluray as a really good bonus.I would pay $600 for a ps3 without bluray because I know the use I got out of my previous playstations. If your ps3 last's 4 yrs then at only 1 dollar per day that's $1,460.
That's just hardware not anything else.Since bluray is a game format superior to dvd and has more space. It's important for games as well as movies.

dblbogey7 has a point. For videophiles the PS3 won't be a first choice BluRay player. They will want a standalone. This will change if the software decoder of the PS3 outperforms the Sigma chip on the standalones. If this happens gamers will have more competition for the $600 model.
"The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate."

I also don't care about blu ray or hddvd. I just want to play good games. In a couple years when you can get blu ray or hd dvd players at wal mart for like 50 bucks, then I will get one if it catches on. I don't like to watch movies on my consoles anyways, I feel like I am wasting the life of it when I can just use a stand alone player that is quiet and made for just watching movies.

Well from everything i'm reading, it's the same to program for a DVD as it is for a Blu-ray. The data is just more compressed (with the blue-violet laser) so more data fits in the same area as a DVD. This lead to an interesting idea/question over at maxconsole.net. Why couldn't $ony have released the low end PS3 for about $300, but with a DVD player instead of Blu-ray?
Think about it. The Blu-ray player makes up $200-$400 of the system's cost. ($ony won't release true figures on the component prices, they give rough estimates) If they had (or maybe will) release the first year of games on a DVD9, it would be more than enough capacity. MGS4 might have high def graphics, but do you really think it goes above 9GB in storage? To me, i don't think it will. And some of the other games (Devil May Cry 4, Unreal Tournament, RE5, FFXIII) probably won't go far above 10GB for awhile.
$ony might have a trick up their sleeve. If sales for the system tank, they could re-issue all the first year's games on DVD9, bring out a lower end system for the sweet price of $300, and everyone would be golden. Once Blu-ray prices had fallen enough, people could sell their older PS3 & the titles could still be made on DVD for another 1-2 years.
UMD failed because $ony got greedy. They lost $$$ on those movies. In the older days, $ony would never do a 180 degree turn like that (pulling all the UMD movies). They would rather save face & continue taking a loss. Don't count $ony out, if PS3 does not sell as it should, they might take the idea and run with it. {and they better send me $$$ for thinking this sh*t up!}

the main focal point sony has preached with the ps3 is that its so much more than just a "game console." i understand the point you made about offering a $300 system w/o Blu-ray, but i don't see that ever happening. sony really believes this system will last ten years and they built it with flexibility to do so. traditional gaming systems i had growing up seem to be a thing of the past. who knows maybe for this era future systems will mirror the ps3, making this the new standard...

besides, if there were a ps3 without blu ray, it would be in efficient, because, some games would be in blu ray format and that means that you couldnt play those games if sony sold a cheaper ps3

I wouldnt waste my money on a bluray player yet because I read in a magazine that hd formats are not perfected yet, I would wait until they are perfected

The Blu-ray burner in the PS3 will be a stipped down, bottom of the line piece of junk just like the PS2's dvd player. It will no where be in the same league as the Sonys $999.99 player.

Blu-ray is good, sony is not using Blu-ray as decoy because there r computer fans that only likes computer not ps3 so they want Blu-ray to and the space is bigger then DVD(because they wanna upgrade)
and ps3 fans that only like ps3 not computer so they'll only buy ps3 not the burner
