To check. Control Panel>Performance and Maint..>System>Hardware tab> Device manager>IDE/ATA controllers, primary, clicks>advanceed settings> check for PIO or DMA mode.

When was the last time that you blew the wooly buggars out of your system? Sometimes if the unit is overheating it will slow down. How much ram do you have? Make sure you shut down all unnessary programs, such as spyware blockers, popup blockers anti virus, etc. Shrink is very cpu intensive and with these others things running it can slow the system way down.
