What happened to the thread "You Ask:What the Hell are Newsgroups?" It said it had an update and when I click the link it doesn't take me there and can't find it in search.

In any case my last question was: I have satellite what kind of connection do you think I would have on newsgroups?

Unfortunately that didn't help much. I was wondering in kbp/s I am a faster than dial-up but slower than DSL. What does someone on DSL get?

I just tried out the speed tester and it said that I get 1 Mbps. That's good but I think conditions will be different when I actually download. What do you say Memnock?

Do you know if there is any place that I can look to see if the games I want are on Giganews before I subscribe?

Newsgroups are by far the fastest out of everything i've tried, i get around 1000 KB/Sec from my 10Mbit cable, and i got 100 KB/sec on my old 1Mbit connection. Check on http://www.newzbin.com if the game you want is reported on there, the chances are it'll be on giganews.

I am using Blackcat but it will only give me 18 kbps.

Also I have tried the newzbin but can't find Dynasty Warriors 5. I'd imagine that I would have to connect to the newsgroup in order to make the request wouldn't I?

Newsgroups, unless they are capped are only limited by your connection speed. With a 1mbps connection you should be downloading around 100kbps. I have a 6mbps connection and I get around usually 600kbps although I've hit close to 800kpbs and the speeds where on a comparable scale when I had a slower connection. News groups will give you the fastest speeds and there's no denying that. There no queing or waiting in line. It's just high speed leeching bliss. The downsides are to get the most out of it you need to pay and it's a bit complicated, but so worth it to me. Anyway search www.binsearch.info to see when Dynasty Warriors 5 was posted. The other thread may have went to far down the piracy road and was deleted. I'm not sure on why it's gone.

I was getting 100-175 kbps. then suddenly it went to .05 kbps. after 3 days still the same. I never used p2p's figured i'd get caught, wondering if i did anyhow.

i dont know about statellight but with cable the limit isnt phsical like statelight. for cable teh speed limit is set by isp in order to make you buy higer tier service. but i pay for 500KB/sec service and it downloads at 800KB/sec on newsgroup. and for regular DL off of websites its around 2MB/sec peak

peace

EDIT:

Mem I was asking if that Alt.binaries.the-terminal was a Usenet thing. Also is Giganews using Usenet?

Another quick question, I am at a public library a lot due to school, I wonder if I would be able to use their download speed to get a bunch of the files and then take them home on a flash drive or something. What do you guys think?

alt.binaries.the-terminal is a newsgroup. So it's a usenet thing. Usenet and newsgroups are the same thing. Giganews carries that group and most pay news server should carry it too. My ISP just started carrying it too about a month ago. I don't think the library would work, because I doubt they'd have a news reader installed and public libraries pretty much never let you install software on their computers.

Only if you have a 8 Gig Flash stick. Might get away with a 4 GB one, since all the games are in .rar and I've never seen a 360 game under 4 GB yet.

There's ways, I was thinking running a newsreader from a flash stick and then only downloading enough pieces to fill a different stick which I can then take home and stick on my computer only to start again the next day. Now that I am in college I am right near that library 4 days a week and they let you use that computer for an hour at a time uninterrupted so I figured the speed might be worth it for those four hours a week and on the weekends just get whatever I couldn't at the library.

I didn't thing about running your news reader off a flash stick. That could possibly work. I'm curious how it would go. Also I wonder if someone would notice all that bandwidth you'd be using.
