Ok I bought the 6.99 25 pack of Verbatim 16x DVD+Rs ID Code MCC-004-00 (made in Taiwan). I've so far made 3 coasters. I've been using Imgburn, booktyping to DVD-ROM and burning at 8x. I believe my burner can only burn at 8x max, is that a problem? Should I be burning at 1x? Uhg, I kept hearing great things about Verbatim so I got them and so far only bad things. My Japan Fujifilm DVD+R have been working better and they are "2nd rate" according to one of the sticky threads.

You probably need a firmware update. If your burner is still supported with them.
What is the make and model of your burner?

i have had problems with these disc also. until some wise people here had told me to burn them at 12x ive burnt about 10 or so now at 12x and have had 100% burns with them no coasters. by chance you dont have a HP burner do you? that is what i have for the time being that burner isnt all that good ive had it for about 8 months now and have had alot of coasters from it.... once again if you can burn them at 12x you should be ok

Post your burner model number and current firmware version and we'll check to see that you are up to date. If your drive is an 8X drive you won't be able to burn at 12X.

LITE-ON LDW-851S GS0P - Firmware should be up to date but maybe I missed something. Should I attempt burning at a low speed like 2x? My coasters were made at 8x.

Firmware is current, but hasn't been updated since 2004 according to RPC1...agreeing with creaky, could you post a burn log from Imgburn? You might try 4X, but with firmware that outdated I doubt if it will help.

Well, i've made successful burns with my Fujifilm media, so I know Imgburn works, where might I find where my burner is supported? Will post the burn log in a few.
I updated my firmware from the liteonit webpage. The date says 03/22/2006

What speed were the Fuji discs rated? The reason for firmware is to help your burner better handle new media (such as 8X, 16X etc.) and a wider array of manufacturers media. Your burner hasn't recieved an update since 8X media was the standard, this might be why your Fuji discs (if they are 8X discs) gave you good burns, but you are having no joy with the "newer" 16X verbatim...you drive just doesn't know how to handle them.

- well imgburn can obviously recognise your burner correctly...however it's all down to whether your firmware can recognise the MCC004 correctly, i'll have a mooch...

indeed, yeah we need to determine what the actual problem is; the log does seem fine.
@Rouzuki - define coaster for us as you see it, not the meaning but how are you seeing the problem manifest itself ?. if it's playback problems you could try a CRC check to ceck for corruption on one of the problematic discs.
ps i was just passing originally so just chipping in :)

well the logged one worked ironically, but playback is a bit skippy and compared to a similar copy made on Fuji the Fuji runs smoothly. Hmm, I decreased the burn down to 4x from 8x for the skippy one, should i decrease more or increase to 6x? Ill do a CRC check on the others too.
But to answer a question from a fews posts ago, the Fuji is rated 8x so I'm sure that helps it be more compatible like said.

i would do some CRC scanning first ie we need to establish if the data is intact or it's simply a playback issue

In MY experience with burning too fast and skipping playback, I had to redo from the ORIGINAL. I checked my backup for CRC errors, nothing. For some reason, slowing down the burn speed when using the BACKUP only produced the same results.
So....if I have any playback problems, I redo from the ORIGINAL dvd.

The CRC scan came back fine, I believe my burner is just too old. I burnt a few more copies of a known working DVD at all the speeds available, and though none of the rest work well or at all, 6x seems to work fine. Thank you guys again for assisting me in my DVD perils!

cool; it could well be a little old now; and to help you further in your burning adventures... i'll quote the mighty Monty Python - Quote: LAUNCELOT:
We were in the nick of time. You were in great peril.
GALAHAD:
I don't think I was.
LAUNCELOT:
Yes, you were. You were in terrible peril.
GALAHAD:
Look, let me go back in there and face the peril.
LAUNCELOT:
No, it's too perilous.
GALAHAD:
Look, it's my duty as a knight to sample as much peril as I can.
LAUNCELOT:
No, we've got to find the Holy Grail of DVD Burning. Come on!
